Suggested March 2024 WordPress 4.1 Is Now Available: Here’s What’s New

WordPress announced the release of version 4.1 of it’s software today, which is now available to either download or update directly from your WordPress dashboard.

The new version of WordPress is code named “Dinah” in honor of jazz singer Dinah Washington. In addition to a new default theme, it comes with several new features designed to keep you focused on what matters most — creating content.

In this post I’ll go over some of the new features of WordPress 4.1 and how they can benefit you.

WordPress 4.1 New Features

With every new year comes a new default WordPress theme named after the year of release. The company describes Twenty Fifteen as “a blog-focused theme designed for clarity.”

The new theme reduces clutter and puts your content front and center. It’s suitable to be viewed on any screen size, whether on a phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer.

In order to help you concentrate on writing content, there’s a new distraction-free writing mode that automatically triggers as you start typing. Everything that’s non-essential to writing fades away and returns when you’ve stopped writing.

As someone who writes a lot of content on WordPress, this is the feature I’m most excited about. The sheer amount of stuff you’re surrounded by in the WordPress backend is overwhelming at times, so this is sure to make writing a lot easier.

Other Miscellaneous Features

Language Selection: Switch to any language from the General Settings screen.

Log Out Everywhere: If you’ve signed in to WordPress from multiple computers, there’s now an option to log out from all devices.

Embed Vine Videos: Paste a Vine URL into a post and it will automatically embed itself.

Plugin Recommendations: The plugin installer will recommend plugins for you to try based on other plugins you have installed.

If you’re interested in the more technical details about WordPress 4.1, you can see the full list of updates here.

Apex Is Now Available On Cydia. Here’s Why You Should Buy It

One of the best jailbreak tweaks to touch down in some time is now available for purchase on the Cydia Store. I’m referring to Apex, the new jailbreak tweak collaboration from A3tweaks.

Apex is an innovative new release that allows you to group sets of app icons together, and reveal each individual app using a swipe up or swipe down gesture. This means that you can have what appears to be a single app on your Home screen, when in all actuality, it’s hiding up to four additional apps.

Apex is a great way to get by without using folders. It allows you to quickly group items together, and launch them just as fast using intuitive gesture commands. Have a look inside at our full video walkthrough, as I explain why this is a must have jailbreak release for you.

At its core, Apex is a simple tweak that really only does one thing — allows you to group apps. That in itself is a fairly simplistic premise, but the tweak gets fairly complex when it comes to rendering the way those elements look on the Home screen.

Instead of just opting to dump a whole group of apps on the Home screen, meticulous detail was paid to how the apps are grouped together. With Apex, up to four apps can be mated to another app at any given time. You don’t necessarily have to use four apps, that’s just the limit for the amount of apps that can be grouped to another.

When looking at Apex, I’m sort of loosely reminded of how electrons surround a nucleus. The nucleus, of course, being the primary app that’s used to group the other four apps, and the electrons being any one of the apps designated to mate with the nucleus app.

This analogy makes more sense when you gather how the mated app icons “stick” to the primary app icon. No matter where the primary app is located on the Home screen — whether it’s the top left-hand corner, bottom right-hand corner, or somewhere in the middle — the mated apps find a way to surround the app in a logical order. Watch the video demonstration above and it will give you a sense as to what I’m referring to.

As mentioned, gestures play an integral role in Apex’s functionality. A swipe up or swipe down gesture on any app will reveal four empty spaces where companion apps can be added. The blank spaces where potential apps can be are symbolized by plus signs encapsulated with outlined boxes.

Tapping on the plus sign dims the rest of the screen, and reveals a vertically scrollable interface, which lists all of the available apps present on your device. Once a desired app is situated on top of the box, a checkmark will appear in the upper right-hand corner of the app signifying its selection. From there, a tap of the Home button will lock in the selection, and bring you back to the remaining empty three boxes.

You can stop right there, or continue adding up to three additional apps to finish the group. The developers recommend adding similar apps, for instance, grouping the Camera app with Instagram, Vine, Camera+, and Hipstamatic. This results in a more folder like inventory of apps, that’s convenient, but certainly not required and or necessary to get a lot out of Apex.

Once a group has been settled on, the main app icon that makes up the group can be swiped on at any time to reveal the other apps associated with that group. You’ll be able to tell when an app icon contains a group by the other apps that ever so subtly peek out from behind the primary app icon. If you’re not particularly fond of this effect, it can be exchanged for an even more subtle indicator by means of a handy toggle option in the tweak’s preferences.

Removing apps from groups is basically an exercise in reversing the steps taken to add icons to a group. First you’ll need to swipe on the tweak to reveal its grouped apps, tap and hold on an icon to place the device into wiggle mode, and then tap on the app icon you want to remove. From there, just move the list of app icons all the way to to the top of the list, where the blank app resides, and press the Home button. Written out, the steps seem a bit cumbersome, but it’s really quick and only take a couple of seconds.

It’s not just the function of the tweak that’s impressive, but it’s the way that function is executed. It shows that the makers behind it actually care, and aren’t just after a quick payday (if you can even call it that, given the modest price point of the offering).

That being said, there is a small bug that I found on 4″ screen devices. The bug allows you to have five app icons grouped to another, instead of the standard four. I’ve confirmed with the developer that this is indeed a bug, and not implemented by design. The bug makes it so, depending on where the primary app icon is positioned, access to one of the five apps may be restricted until the primary app is moved to another location on the Home screen. This bug is certainly not a deal breaker, and it only happens if you intentionally add more than four apps to a group.

Google Search Ads 360 Updated: Here’s What’s New

Here’s what’s new in what is the most significant update to Search Ads 360 since its inception over 10 years ago.

The Rebuilt Search Ads 360 Platform

The new Search Ads 360 redesign is now built on the same platform as Google Ads.

Google points out numerous benefits for the updated technology, including:

The ability to process and manage more data

Delivering a faster user experience

Scaling enterprise workload

Updated bidding strategies

Quite possibly the biggest update for Search Ads 360 is the immediate support for the new campaign types that were introduced in Google Ads:

Performance Max campaigns

Discovery campaigns

Faster Navigation Features In Search Ads 360

Google Search Ads 360 users are used to working in platforms such as Google Ads and Microsoft Ads. That’s why Google refreshed its interface to closely resemble those tools.

Faster navigation capabilities allow enterprise marketers to streamline their workload, with some estimating a 20% time savings.

Improved Search Engine Support

Google also announced that the new Search Ads 360 offers better support for 3rd party tools.

Dynamic Ads for Search

Sitelink extension scheduling

Common Microsoft Advertising features

Customer Match in Microsoft Ads

Third party tool support aims to allow you complete tasks in one place. The less you have to switch platforms to get work done, the more you can focus on tasks that move the needle.

Advanced Enterprise Innovations

In addition to the Search Ads 360 features that mirror other platforms, Google has added features unique to this platform.

These features give you brand-new ways to streamline and centralize everyday tasks. Changes that may need to be made in multiple platforms can now be done at the same time in Search Ads 360.

Lastly, the budget management feature will be upgraded in Search Ads 360 and turned into the “Performance Center.”

Instead of simple budget management, you’ll be able to forecast spend and trends across multiple search engines. This will be an essential tool in planning marketing budget scenarios to fit the ever-changing economy and demand.

During allotted screen time, you can allow communication with everyone, but during downtime you could limit communication to certain people.

This feature is especially useful for parents. For example, parents can block their kids from communication with everyone except themselves after a certain time of day. Screen Time Communication Limits apply to the Phone app, Messages app, and FaceTime.

iOS 13.3 also has new security features. The Safari browser also supports FIDO2 security keys over Lightning, USB or NFC. You can read more about that change here.

iOS 12.4.4 has also been released for older iPhones with security and performance improvements. It is available for iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, iPad Air, iPad Mini 2/3, and iPod touch 6th-gen.

tvOS 13.3

Meanwhile, tvOS 13.3 adds a new setting to revert one of the more annoying changes made to the Apple TV with tvOS 13.

Apple redesigned the Apple TV home screen with tvOS 13 to allow for fullscreen panoramic previews in the Top Shelf area. At the same time, it also changed the content of the Top Shelf for the TV app. The area originally showed your personalized “Up Next” queue, but that was changed to a “What to Watch” selection of video trailers and previews this year.

A new setting in tvOS 13.3, however, lets you bring back the “Up Next” queue to your Apple TV Home screen. To change the setting, update to tvOS 13.3 Then, go into the Settings app. Select Apps, then select the TV app.

Ios 14.5 Now Available To Everyone; Here Are All Of The New Features

After a beta testing cycle that spanned nearly three months, iOS 14.5 is now available to everyone alongside iPadOS 14.5. You can update your iPhone or iPad by going to the Settings app, choosing General, then choosing Software Update. Read on for details on everything new in iOS 14.5.

What’s new in iOS 14.5?

iOS 14.5 is a major release for iPhone users with a number of notable new features. Here’s the rundown on all of them.

Apple Watch Unlock

The biggest change in iOS 14.5 is a new feature that allows you to unlock your iPhone with your Apple Watch when you’re wearing a face mask. This feature also requires watchOS 7.4, which is also rolling out to Apple Watch users today. To enable this feature, go to the Settings app on your iPhone, choose Face ID and Passcode, then look for the new “Unlock with Apple Watch” toggle.

After you update and enable this feature, your iPhone will unlock automatically with your Apple Watch the next time you wear a face mask. When your iPhone unlocks, you’ll receive a haptic feedback notification on your Apple Watch telling you that your iPhone was unlocked by the Apple Watch. There is also the option to quickly “Lock iPhone” directly from that Apple Watch notification.

App Tracking Transparency

iOS 14.5 also includes the new App Tracking Transparency feature. This requires that applications ask permission from users before tracking them across other apps and websites. For example, when you open the Facebook app, you’ll see a prompt that says the app would like to track you across other apps and services. There will be two options from which to choose: “Ask App not to Track” or “Allow.”

In the “Privacy” section of the Settings app, you will also be able to see a list of applications that have requested permission to track you and make changes as you see fit.

iOS 14.5 brings new features to the Apple News application, including an all-new Search tab and a redesigned Apple News+ experience.

Redesigned News+ tab enables Apple News+ subscribers to quickly find, download, and manage magazine and newspaper issues

All-new Search experience that helps you find relevant topics, channels, and stories

Siri improvements

iOS 14.5 also makes several notable improvements to the Siri virtual assistant. First and foremost, there is a new Siri intelligence feature that helps the virtual assistant adapt to your preferring music application. Apple has explained that because there’s no specific setting in iOS where users can configure a “default” music service, this feature is designed specifically as a Siri intelligence feature.

This means that when you ask Siri to play a song for the first time after installing iOS 14.5, Siri will ask you which app you want to use. After tapping one of the options, it will become the default for all future commands. This works for apps like Spotify, Pandora, and Amazon Music.

Furthermore, Apple says that Siri will no longer default to a female voice starting with iOS 14.5. There are also two additional Siri voice options from which to choose. Apple has said that these changes are part of its ongoing commitment to diversity.

As reported by TechCrunch, the new voices use “source talent recordings that are then run through Apple’s Neural text to speech engine.” This allows the voices to “flow more organically,” even when phrases are being generated on the fly. The new voices are available in English-speaking countries.

Additionally, iOS 14.5 also makes improvements to the Siri voices in Ireland, Russia, and Italy, upgrading them from neural text to speech. This means that 38 voices are now using this new technology in total.

You can find the new Siri voices by going to the Settings app, choosing Siri and Search, then looking for the Siri Voice option.

New emoji

iOS 14.5 also adds over 200 new emoji for iPhone and iPad users. The new emoji come from the Emoji 13.1 specification that was certified back in 2023.

Support for separate skin tones for each individual in all variations of the couple kissing emoji and couple with heart emoji

New face emojis, heart emojis, woman with a beard emoji

Ahead of Apple Podcasts Subscriptions launching sometime in May, iOS 14.5 makes a handful of other improvements to the Podcasts application.

Podcasts Show Pages are redesigned to make it easier to start listening

Option to save and download episodes, automatically adding them to your Library for quick access

Download behavior and notification settings can be customized on a show-by-show basis

Top Charts and popular categories in Search help you discover new shows

Other tidbits

Other new features in iOS 14.5:

AirTag support

Horizontal boot screen on the iPad

Updates to the Music app, including swipe gestures, a lyrics sharing feature, and more

AirPlay 2 support for Fitness+ workouts

Waze-like features in Apple Maps

PS5 / Xbox Series X controller support

Apple introduces battery recalibration tool for iPhone with iOS 14.5

Dual SIM support enables 5G connectivity on the line that’s using cellular data on iPhone 12 models

Apple Music: Share your favorite lyrics using Messages, Facebook, and Instagram Stories, and subscribers can play the snippet in Messages without leaving the conversation

Apple Music: City charts showcase what’s popular in over 100 cities from all over the world

Reminders: Ability to sort reminders by Title, Priority, Due Date, or Creation date. New Print option as well.

Bug fixes

Apple also says that iOS 14.5 includes a host of bug fixes and performance improvements.

Email Marketing Innovations – What’s New?

The latest tactics showing why Email marketing is “alive and well”

If you think about innovation, the first thing that comes to mind probably isn’t marketing, probably you are thinking of the latest gadgets, self-driving cars and drones. But in the quickly-evolving marketing world a lot has changed in the way brands and consumers communicate. With a trusted and solid channel like email marketing, where does the real innovation takes place?

Email is mature, but not outgrown

Email marketing is known to be a trusted and versatile marketing channel. In the Gartner Digital Marketing Hype cycle published last July places it has moved beyond ‘the slope of Enlightenment’ and on emerged onto the ‘Plateau of productivity’.

Connected marketing concepts that we also find in this graph are still being hyped, meaning that it will take at least 2 – 5 years before marketers realistically will be getting the most out of these channels, if they ever emerge.

The email channel alternately either serves as the center spoke or is almost synonymous with concepts like: Data-Driven Marketing, Content Marketing, Digital Marketing Hubs, Event Triggered Marketing, Campaign Segmentation and others. This is an interesting observation because while email itself is very mature, these other connected elements are not yet fully developed and can signal the way ESP platform are developing.

Mobile email marketing

Research into email innovations in the enterprise market

This year a new iteration of the Forrester Wave email marketing was released. The first part of the Forrester Wave Email Marketing Vendors 2014 report includes the results of the Global Email Marketing Customer Reference Online Survey, held amongst email marketers in the enterprise market.

Top email marketing tactics

The tactics and strategies employed are sorted according to the duration of their use: This results in the following top 3 of  ’innovative’ e-mail marketing tactics used in the enterprise market:

1. E-mail triggers (45% more than 3 years, 39% 1 to 3 years)

2. Personalization ( 45% more than 3 years, 38% 1 to 3 years)

3. Triggered transactional e-mails ( 44% more than 3 years, 26% 1 to 3 years)

The use of e-mail triggers and personalization has almost doubled over the past three years among the surveyed companies. Keeping in mind that three years ago, most companies were not capable of applying these strategies, this growth represents an impressive increase. E-mail marketing is alive and well, and the capacities in the enterprise market are seemingly growing. It implies that marketing in this segment is on its way up, to become more sophisticated.

Let’s talk about the innovative nature of the top 3. Provided all companies can deploy them and it makes good business sense. When over a quarter does use these techniques, you can’t call them innovative any more in my opinion. If they are used by over half, they can certainly be seen as part of the standard arsenal and shouldn’t be included in the list at all, or should they?

Innovation does not equal new technology

What the outcomes seem to explain is that innovation inside a company means new tactics, which is very different to new technology. Every day new email marketing features are released by vendors,

Marketing technology usually outpaces the use and need for these features by a mile. Especially in the enterprise market.

For example, marketing automation is not new, but truly working towards one-on-one communication is novel to many companies. Personalization is not new at all, but being effective in using it beyond ‘Hi Firstname’: totally new to many.

A brand can  innovate their email marketing program by applying the techniques they didn’t use in the past. And if those tactics have the highest ROI and bring them the biggest increase in results, that is exactly what they should do.

Now the next step in innovation by brands might not be using new tactics, but using the ones they already have to the fullest – regardless of what everybody else is doing. That might not be called innovation, but and reaching ones own Personal Plateau of Productivity is definitely a new way of looking at it.
