The key to the long-term success of wireless charging is standardization. As long as charging systems such as the Powermat work only with their own proprietary hardware, the concept will continue to be a niche novelty. But if many vendors agree to standardize devices and to make charging systems interchangeable, as is the case with the Energizer Qi, the possibilities are nearly limitless.

That’s the goal, more or less, of the Wireless Power Consortium . The organization–consisting of more than 70 companies–is developing the Open Inductive Charging Standard, more commonly known as Qi. Named for the Chinese word for “life force,” the Qi standard enables devices from different vendors to charge interchangeably as long as they are Qi-compliant. Only a handful of Qi-compatible products are available currently, and the standard has existed for just a few months, but so far it’s showing impressive momentum.

Imagine if hotel rooms came standard with universal charging mats. Instead of having to carry the bulky chargers for your laptop, mobile phone, tablet, e-reader, and music player–and being out of luck when you forget one at home–you could simply set your gadgets on the charging mat.

Another drawback is that you must have access to the charging mat. The convenience of not having to worry about cords is lost when you must ensure that you have both the right proprietary inductive charging sleeve and the appropriate charging mat.

The technology still has some kinks to work out, though. For each of your devices, you need some sort of charging sleeve or a connector to a charging module; unlike the Palm Pre, other gadgets don’t have inductive charging technology built in.

It’s awesome to be able to charge a mobile gadget without the hassle of untangling cords and plugging it in; you just set the device down on a charging pad and walk away. A single charging system can work with devices from different manufacturers, and in some cases it can even charge multiple devices simultaneously.

Other wireless charging options include the Energizer Qi, the Powermat, and the Duracell MyGrid, all of which enable users to wirelessly charge a variety of gadgets and devices.

Most smartphones rely on old-fashioned conductive charging, requiring you to plug in the handset. However, you can charge the Palm Pre by placing it on the HP Touchstone wireless charging base, because inductive charging technology is built into the Pre’s case. Both HTC and LG announced smartphones at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show that include wireless charging capabilities built into their batteries.

Plugging your device into an electricity source with a cord is a tedious pain–especially when you consider the diverse array of connector types and power cords involved. Traditional charging relies on electricity conducted directly between a device and a connecting physical wire or through contact with batteries. On the other hand, inductive charging uses magnetic and electromagnetic energy to induce a transfer of power wirelessly. Many electric toothbrushes charge this way.

In this article, I’ll discuss the pros and cons of inductive and conductive wireless charging technology, and I’ll describe how three wireless charging products worked for me.

Major growth is coming soon for the wireless charging market, according to market research firm iSuppli. The company predicts a 65-fold increase in the overall market in the next few years, and estimates that more than 230 million electronic devices with wireless charging functionality will ship in 2014.

What if you could travel with just one charging option for all your digital devices, instead of lugging around a tangle of charging cables? Wouldn’t it be nice if you could set down your smartphone on a special charging table or car dashboard to power it up without any cords?

Gadgets are increasingly becoming more mobile and wireless, and we’re breaking free of cords and wires–or so we wish. Even wireless devices have to be plugged in every so often to recharge their batteries. Wireless charging technology could change that, though, and enable us to live in a truly cord-free world.

Hands On With Wireless Chargers

I really like the look and feel of the Energizer Qi iPhone 4 sleeve, which is smooth, solid, and a nice fit on the phone. It does add some heft, though: The sleeve weighs about twice as much as the Powermat’s iPhone 4 sleeve, adding just over an ounce to the total weight of the smartphone.

Powermat 2x Mat with Powercube ($70): The Powermat charging system, on the other hand, has a Micro-USB connector in the bottom of the iPhone 4 charging sleeve. It comes equipped with a USB-to-Micro-USB cord so that you can still connect the iPhone 4 to your PC and sync its data without having to remove the phone from the charging sleeve. Of course, the irony of needing a wire to maintain the functionality of my smartphone while using it with my “wireless” charging system is not lost on me.

The Powermat charging system is much more versatile than the Energizer Qi. Sleeves for a variety of smartphones are available, ranging in price from $20 to $40; the assortment covers iPhones as well as Android and BlackBerry handsets. Plus, you can find charging sleeves for the Nintendo DS and DS Lite, an inductive charging dock for the iPod and iPhone, and a universal charging module for devices that aren’t equipped with sleeves. Powermat also offers a portable rechargeable battery that you can charge wirelessly and then carry as an emergency backup for your mobile device.

As with the Energizer system, I have two complaints about the Powermat. The first problem is with the flip-down top of the iPhone 4 sleeve, where the device slides in; it clips on too snugly, and getting the iPhone 4 in and out of the charging sleeve is a pain. The flip-down part seems unnecessary. The other issue is that Powermat’s technology is proprietary–although I like the Powermat system more than the Energizer Qi system today, I would rather invest in a standardized platform that doesn’t lock me in to one vendor.

Unlike the other two wireless charging systems, the Duracell MyGrid uses conductive, rather than inductive, technology. Power transfers from metal strips on the MyGrid charging mat to metal contacts on the charging sleeve or clip, but the MyGrid mat is engineered so that it’s safe to touch and not a shock hazard.

The charging sleeve for the iPhone 4 is a lightweight, flexible rubber case. It’s my favorite of the three; like the Energizer Qi sleeve, however, it does not provide any way of syncing the iPhone 4 while the handset is in the case.

Going Sleeveless

Wireless charging for mobile devices is cool and has potential, but currently it doesn’t really make life more efficient or convenient. Instead of having to connect your smartphone to a charging cord, you have to make sure you have the right charging sleeve. Instead of needing the right adapter and connector to juice up your gadget, you require the appropriate charging mat. These are the same drawbacks as with wired charging, but with different items to remember.

For my iPhone 4, in fact, cord-free charging actually adds complexity. Instead of connecting the phone to my PC via USB cable and then charging, syncing, and backing it up simultaneously while I sleep, I now have to charge the phone wirelessly, and then connect it to the PC to sync and backup. That might even require removing the charging sleeve, depending on the wireless charging platform.

“It is about time some sort of standard emerges for charging devices,” says Al Hilwa, an analyst for research firm IDC, adding that vendors have had little financial incentive to adapt a shared standard.

If Qi gains momentum, then smartphone, tablet, and laptop vendors will simply build Qi-compatible inductive charging functionality into the cases of their devices, eliminating the need for external charging sleeves.

The Wireless Power Consortium envisions incorporating Qi into a wide range of settings, including homes, hotels, airports, convenience stores, and restaurant chains. Imagine if automobile manufacturers built Qi-compatible charging into vehicles.

Wireless charging everywhere could be great–but today it remains a cool, niche novelty.

Starting From Scratch: Trusted Root In Samsung Mobile Devices

Android’s decoupling of the hardware and operating system brings benefits to IT: It allows application and hardware vendors to compete on innovation, features, form factor, price and security. Samsung Knox is an example of the latter: A combination of hardware features and software enhancements to Android that increase mobile security.

What Is a Trusted Platform?

Not every Android phone is designed for the enterprise market. Vendors such as Samsung have evaluated the higher security requirements of enterprise customers and have responded by releasing trusted platforms: Devices with built-in hardware that establishes the integrity and identity of the platform and ensures only trusted software is loaded.

With a trusted platform, bootkit and rootkit attacks by malware and curious end users are generally blocked. Additionally, data encryption is more difficult to subvert because keys are not software accessible.

Today’s technology comes from the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) which publishes the Trusted Platform Module (TPM). TCG started in 2003, defining what a trusted platform would look like, and how it might be implemented and standardized. A TPM is a computer-within-a-computer, completely shielded from the main CPU. Software, whether friendly or unfriendly, can’t reach into the memory or storage of the TPM directly. In larger devices, such as laptops and desktops, the TPM is usually a separate chip.

Building Trusted Platforms on Smartphones

Trusted platform smartphones take a different approach for mobile devices with smaller packages and with tighter power budgets. Rather than add a TPM chip, devices build a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) right into the main CPU and create a trusted platform. TEEs are implemented on the same CPU as the phone itself, helping with whole-disk encryption and overall processing speed.

A smartphone TEE isolates the management and storage of secure data, such as encryption keys. The TEE has its own software and memory that can’t be touched by the main CPU and runs authorized applications for security processing.

A well-defined API is used to communicate between the main CPU and the TEE, which tightly controls how data moves back and forth between the TEE and the outside world. Samsung’s TEE falls under the Knox brand and is built into Samsung smartphones.

The Samsung Knox TEE extends TrustZone, a TEE technology developed for ARM CPUs. By itself, TrustZone doesn’t provide all the features needed for a trusted platform. But with extensions and additions created by Samsung for the Knox TEE, Samsung smartphones become trusted platforms, providing a much higher level of security.

Supporting the TEE

Before delving into the extended environment of Knox TEE, it’s important to understand hardware root of trust components. These are trusted root pieces built-in at the factory, and support basic trusted platform functions such as secure booting.

1. Device Root Key (DRK) and Device Unique Hardware Key (DUHK)

The DRK and DUHK are public/private key pairs, unique to each device, that are created and stored in the TEE as part of the manufacturing and initial boot process.

A DRK is loaded and signed by Samsung during manufacturing; the DUHK is created at first boot and is signed by the DRK. In effect, each phone has its own digital certificates — with matching private keys — signed by Samsung. The private keys are stored in the Knox TEE, which means that they can’t be read or replaced directly by the Android OS or apps — only used by calling the TEE API.

Both the DRK and DUHK serve as authenticators, or a way for software to determine exactly which smartphone is being used. But authentication is just a start.

Starting with the signed DRK and DUHK private keys, the TEE can create additional protected signed encryption keys and authentication tokens. This connection lets software verify exactly which phone created the encryption keys, and recognize they were produced in a Samsung Knox TEE. These keys never leave the TEE, making them perfect for encrypting smartphone storage: Even if the encrypted data is stolen by malware, the keys cannot be read outside the TEE.

Samsung also manufactures into the phone one of its own digital certificates. The Knox TEE uses this certificate to verify digital signatures on software, specifically boot components. A secure boot certificate is what enables the smartphone to know, as it is booting, that each loading component came directly from Samsung.

Secure Boot is limited, since it cannot distinguish between different approved versions, for example, a bootloader with a known vulnerability and a later patched version, as both versions have valid signatures. To address this limitation, Knox adds Trusted Boot, under which each software component in the chain computes and securely stores the cryptographic hash of the next component in TrustZone memory before loading it.

Storing and archiving measurement data enables third-parties to utilize attestation to identify the exact software version currently running on the device. This method ensures only the latest patched software versions are utilized to ensure patched software is not downgraded to an insecure version.

3. Rollback Prevention and Warranty Bit

Rollback Prevention defines the minimum acceptable version of the firmware for that phone. This is permanently stored in the TEE. If someone tries to load older firmware, Rollback Prevention causes the TEE to reject the installation. Rollback Prevention can be updated during firmware upgrades, keeping the protection up-to-date, and preventing additional security vulnerabilities.

To detect potential root of trust tampering, a memory location in the TEE called the Warranty Bit, signals that someone has managed to put non-approved software on the phone. Sometimes called a hardware fuse, a Warranty Bit cannot be reversed once it is written.

Even with the decoupling of Android’s hardware and software, the use of trusted hardware roots gives IT administrators an extra level of security built directly into the phone — decreasing the attack surface and giving more tools to detect threats.

Content creators have fantasized about doing video search. For many years,, major engineering challenges were a road block to comprehending video images directly.

Video visual search opens up a whole new field where video is the new HTML. And, the new visual SEO is what’s in the image. We’re in exciting times with new companies dedicated to video visual search.  In a previous post, Video Machine Learning: A Content Marketing Revolution, we demonstrated image analysis within video to improve video performance. After one year, we’re now embarking on video visual search via deep learning.

Behind the Deep Curtain

The evolution of what’s call a Convolution Neural Network, or CNN aka deep learning, was created from thought leaders like Yann LeCrun (Facebook), Geoffrey Hinton (Google), Andrew Ng (Baidu) and Li Fei-Fei (Director of the Stanford AI Lab and creator of ImageNet). Now the field has exploded and all major companies have open sourced their deep learning platforms for running Convolution Neural Networks in various forms. In an interview with  New York Times, Fei-Fei said “I consider the pixel data in images and video to be the dark matter of the Internet. Big Numbers

Think about this: video is a collection of images linked together and played back at 30 frames-a-second. Analyzing massive number of frames is a major challenge

As humans, we see video all the time and our brains are processing those images in real-time. Getting a machine to do this very task at scale is not trivial. Machines processing images is an amazing feat and doing this task in real-time video is even harder. You must decipher shapes, symbols, objects, and meaning. For  robotics and self-driving cars this is the holy grail.

To create a video image classification system required a slightly different approach. You must handle the enormous number of single frames in a video file first to understand what’s in the images.

Visual Search

On September 28th, 2024, the seven-member Google research team announced YouTube-8M leveraging state-of-the-art deep learning models. YouTube-8M, consists of 8 million YouTube videos, equivalent to 500K hours of video, all labeled and there are 4800 Knowledge Graph entities.  This is a big deal for the video deep learning space.  YouTube-8M’s scale required some pre-processing on images to pull frame level features first. The team used Inception-V3 image annotation model trained on ImageNet. What’s makes this such a great thing is we now have access to a very large video labeling system and Google did massive heavy lifting to create 8M.

The secret to handling all this big data was reducing the number of frames to be processed. The key is extracting frame level features from 1 frame-per-second creating a manageable data set. This resulted in 1.9 billion video frames enabling a reasonable handling of data. With this size you can train a TensorFlow model on a single Graphic Process Unit (GPU) in 1 day! In comparison, the 8M would have required a petabyte of video storage and 24 CPUs of computing power for a year. It’s easy to see why pre-processing was required to do video image analysis and frame segmenting created a manageable data set.

Big Deep Learning Opportunity

Google has beautifully created two big parts of the video deep learning trifecta.  First, they opened up a video based labeling system (YouTube8m). This will give all in the industry a leg up in analyzing video. Without a labeling system like ImageNet, you would have to do the insane visual analysis on your own. Second, Google opened Tensoflow, their deep learning platform, creating a perfect storm for video deep learning to take off. This is why some call it an artificial intelligence renaissance. Third, we have access to a big data pipeline. For Google this is easy, as they have YouTube. Companies that are creating large amounts of video or user-generated videos will greatly benefit.

Big Start

Follow Google’s lead with TensorFlow, Facebook launched it’s own open AI platform FAIR, followed by Baidu. What does this all mean? The visual information disruption is in full motion. We’re in a unique time where machines can see and think. This is the next wave of computing. Video SEO powered by deep learning is on track to be what keywords are to HTML.

Visual search is driving opportunity and lowering technology costs to propel innovation. Video discovery is not bound by what’s in a video description (meta layer). The use cases around deep learning include medical image processing to self-flying drones, and that is just a start.

Deep learning will have a profound impact our daily lives in ways we never imagined.
