As the release on the long-awaited Windows Vista SP1 nears, many people are asking: will this will be the turning point for Windows Vista, or will it be a dud?
The industry always looks forward to the release of the first service pack for Windows because this is seen as the time when many of the bugs that slipped through the testing phase are squashed. Vista might have been available to business users almost a full three months before it was available to the general public, but system admins are far more restrained than to do something rash like install an OS across their entire system as soon as it’s released.
This is sensible when you consider that when you run into a problem with a new OS, you might well be the first person on earth to press that particular combination of keystrokes or try to do that particular task. This can mean fixes to problems are likely to be a long way off. That period between a new OS being released and the first service pack coming out is seen as a period where businesses slowly come to terms with the fact that they will, one day, have to upgrade … just not yet!
But SP1 is nearly upon us. Around 15,000 guinea pigs have already been given access to it (I’m one of them) and pretty soon a beta is likely to be made available to anyone who wants to try it out. Shortly after that SP1 will be released to the entire population using Vista. That old excuse of waiting for SP1 before thinking about adopting Vista will no longer apply. Sitting on the fence will no longer be acceptable.
The time will come when a decision will have to be made as to whether to take the plunge and adopt Vista now, leave it a few years or skip this version altogether and wait for Windows 7. Decisions, decisions, decisions… How businesses approach this will determine whether Vista is seen as a success or not.
The real question is: whether SP1 will be enough to entice skeptical administrators over to the new operating system or will “we’re waiting for SP1” just get replaced by a different excuse. I believe it all rather depends on what people expect from this service pack.
The problem as I see it is that there’s been far too much hype surrounding this release, almost as much as there was surrounding Vista itself, and that people have blown the significance of a service pack out of all proportion. A service pack is a collection of bug fixes, system tweaks and optimizations – not a major system revamp. True, when Microsoft released SP2 for XP it did result in a radical shake-up of the whole OS, and a whole raft of new features mostly relating to security were introduced. However, this should be taken as the exception and not the rule.
The security features contained in XP SP2 were released to counter web-based threats that had emerged between the launch of the operating system in October 2001 and the release of the service pack in August 2004. Vista SP1 is nothing near as dramatic an update as XP SP2 was. For that matter XP SP3 is nowhere near as dramatic as SP2 was either. (And you should take the claims of 10 percent performance boost under SP3 with a large pinch of salt).

What Will Queen Elizabeth II’s Legacy Be? BU historians on the future of the monarchy and what this moment means for BritainQueen Elizabeth II, England’s longest reigning monarch, died peacefully on Thursday at Balmoral Castle at age 96. Her 70 years as sovereign was a time of enormous upheaval and transformation for the kingdom she presided over. Throughout it all, she was credited for her steady, reassuring presence. Her death elicited a global outpouring of grief.
Within minutes of the announcement of her death, throngs began gathering in the rain outside the gates of Buckingham Palace, and world leaders were offering messages of condolence, noting her sense of duty and her resilience.
“Queen Elizabeth II was more than a monarch. She defined an era,” President Joe Biden, one of 13 sitting US presidents who have met with her, said in a statement released shortly after her death. “In a world of constant change, she was a steadying presence and a source of comfort and pride for generations of Britons, including many who have never known their country without her. An enduring admiration for Queen Elizabeth II united people across the Commonwealth.”
The queen, who appointed her 15th British prime minister, Liz Truss, on September 6—just two days before her death—never expected to reign. Her father, King George V, assumed the throne after his brother, King Edward VIII, abdicated because of his decision to marry American divorcée Wallis Simpson. Elizabeth was only 25 when she assumed the throne, following the death of her father in 1952. Her reign spanned from the rebuilding of Britain following World War II through Brexit. It was also marked with a series of family scandals, among them the acrimonious divorce of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, and more recently, the decision by her grandson, Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, to step back as senior members of the royal family and move to the United States.
In an explosive March 2023 interview with Oprah Winfrey, the couple revealed that Markle and their infant son, Archie, had been subjected to racist treatment by members of the royal family, although they were careful to clear the Queen and Prince Philip of any wrongdoing.
Stoically tight-lipped and reserved, the queen was memorably portrayed in several films and TV series, most notably the Oscar-winning film The Queen (played by Helen Mirren) and the Emmy-winning Netflix series The Crown (Claire Foy and Olivia Coleman, with Imelda Staunton in the role in the show’s final two seasons).
Elizabeth’s oldest son, Prince Charles, automatically became King Charles III upon her death, although his coronation probably won’t be held for months. Succeeding to the throne at age 73, he is the oldest recorded person to become a British monarch.
BU Today spoke with Kathryn Lamontagne (GRS’16,’20), a College of General Studies lecturer in social sciences, and Arianne Chernock, a College of Arts & Sciences professor of history, both experts on modern British and European history, about Queen Elizabeth’s legacy and what her death means for the monarchy going forward.

King Charles III seems to have a lot less public support than his mother—do you think the UK will push for a scaled-down monarchy now that he is king? What does the future hold for the monarchy?
Chernock: There was such an incredible attachment to Queen Elizabeth as a person as well as for the office that she was serving in. And now that that person is gone, it will be interesting to see how King Charles III tests the patience of the British people with this institution that at different points some have described as anachronistic. It has been subject to criticism at certain moments. For the most part, Queen Elizabeth was able to rise above, stay above the fray, but certainly her offspring were not immune.
BU Today:
The New York Times coverage says there is no public figure in modern memory who will be mourned as deeply or whose death could “provoke a greater reckoning with the identity and future of the country.” Do you believe that some in England feel they have lost their national identity with Elizabeth’s death?
Chernock: Yes, I was alluding to this before because Elizabeth came to the throne in 1952, at the age of 25. Her reign became synonymous with the second half of the 20th century. And it’s very hard to separate her contributions, her role, from the broader experiences of the country over which she was ruling.

Machine Learning and NLPFor a long time, efforts have been made to teach an algorithm human language. Over the years, it has been obvious that AI is able to grasp complex concepts such as context, in some cases even complex figures of speech, much more easily than humans. semantics technology is what made all of this possible. It helps the program understand the meaning and not just its etymology.
Voice recognition was another major breakthrough. The algorithm recognizes sounds much more accurately now and can distinguish words based upon the context, geographical location, etc.
Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a crucial component of machine learning when it comes to language learning. A natural language, by itself, is data. It is, however, very different from traditional data.
Language Learning Apps
Next, you should understand the importance of language learning applications. These apps are great because they provide language learners with lessons or learning sessions on-demand. It’s almost like having a tutor with you wherever you are.
Traditional learning had one of its greatest problems. There was a presumption you wouldn’t have a dictionary with you in real-life situations where the target language was required. This is no longer true. It is possible to retake an app-based course or access your in-app vocabulary right away.
This is a totally different approach to the problem. Professional translators rely heavily on translation apps. So why should ordinary language users be held to different standards?
These apps have amazing results. The app’s results are astounding. For example, people who spent six hours studying the app increased their knowledge by at least one level (almost 69%).
75% of those who had studied for at least 15 hours also showed improvement. You can spread your sessions however you like or take it all in one shot if your phone has the battery.
A private tutor would cost quite a lot to hire for 15-minute classes. However, these apps are either completely free or require a minimal monthly subscription.
Enhancing Multilingual Sentence (EMU), Embedding
This is one of the most important postulates in semantics. Sometimes you have to decide whether to retain the meaning (semantics) or keep it as is. This can be especially problematic when translating idioms.
EMU is a great tool in this area. The semantic classifier, one of the EMU components, can identify ground truth labels and assign context based on these. It can then predict what language will be used in each context.
EMU also includes a multilingual encoder, which is the only way that this method can work in multiple languages, and a language discriminator. The language discriminator simply distinguishes between the two languages.
The platform was in its early stages. Efforts were made to “confuse” the discriminator. This strategy has resulted in a platform that is much more resistant to such tactics.
EMU’s multilingualism is now at its peak when it comes to translating and interpreting sentences, as well as distinguishing between sentences with different parallels.
In ConclusionThe ultimate breakthrough could come down to machines being able to understand human speech in a manner similar to humans.
This platform would be able to offer instant information on the semantics of any word or phrase, sentence, and text. It would immediately solve miscommunication and translate problems.

2023 Faculty Forum Will Be Held in Person Monday Four things to know about this year’s symposiumMore than two years after the COVID-19 pandemic forced educational institutions across the country to go remote, develop hybrid methods of teaching, and implement strict social distancing, colleges and universities are grappling with how to restore a sense of community for students and faculty. That topic is the subject of this year’s Faculty Forum on Monday, May 16, at the Rafik B. Hariri Building.
The in-person event is open to BU educators and staff and designed to foster faculty connection and offer strategies to create community in their classrooms. Faculty Forum 2023 will explore these questions and more: How does a sense of belonging and community impact student engagement and learning? What role does technology play in facilitating and strengthening learning communities on campus? How do peer partnerships as well as faculty-to-student partnerships bolster student community? How does inclusive teaching foster community?
Below are four highlights of this year’s symposium.
40-Plus BU Faculty Presenters, Panelists, and ModeratorsLearning happens in community—that’s the lesson we’ve learned over the past several years through research and experience. This year’s Faculty Forum opens up the concept of community in residential education. Calling on the experiences of 40-plus Boston University faculty, the half day in-person symposium will feature parallel sessions, promote connection and collaboration, and offer strategies to create community in the classroom.

Windows 10 users will be able to directly upgrade to Windows 11. Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 users may need to first upgrade to Windows 10 and then to Windows 11 – or else they need to clean install or reimage to go directly to Windows 11 – provided your PC meets the minimum requirements. However, that totally depends on Microsoft. If there are some changes, you will soon be notified.
The edition upgrade from Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 to Windows 11 will be the same as that of Windows 10 to 11. The current edition you are using is the edition of Windows 11 you will be upgraded to.
Programs that are compatible with Windows 7 will run on Windows 11 as well.

Can I upgrade my Windows 10 PC to Windows 11 if running in S mode?If you are running Windows 10 Home edition in S mode, you can upgrade to Windows 11 Home edition in S mode provided that your PC meets minimum hardware specifications.
However, in case you are running Windows 10 Pro edition in S mode, you will be required to switch out of the S mode to upgrade to the Pro edition of Windows 11. This is because the S mode will now only be available in the Home edition of Windows 11.
Can I go back to Windows 10 after I upgrade if I don’t like Windows 11?The answer is Yes. As mentioned on Microsoft’s official website, you can switch back to Windows 10 from Windows 11 within 10 days of the upgrade. After 10 days, back up your data and then perform a “Clean install” to roll back to Windows 10. Also, Windows 10 will be supported till 2025, so you can use it till then.
