DirectX is a collection of APIs, or application programming interfaces, used by software to render multimedia content and communicate with graphical hardware. DirectX’s major component API, Direct3D, handles communications between software and graphics hardware. Because all hardware is different, using a standardized library of functions and calls to communicate with your graphics card speeds up game development. This is called hardware abstraction, and it’s the chief job of the API.

Think about cars: If you can drive one car, you can pretty much drive all of them. The gas and brake pedals are in the same place, and the steering wheel rotates in the same direction and doors open outward. There might be some minor differences in non-critical features like the radio, but overall you know what to expect. DirectX and Direct3D are like that, allowing developers to interface with a wide range of hardware using the same tools. And since most game developers use Direct3D’s standard library, any changes to the API can impact gamers and coders alike.

What’s New in DirectX 12?

Every major update to DirectX and Direct3D brings new features and developments. Direct3D 12, however, brought some especially significant changes. In fact, it could be ushering in a new area of low-level graphics APIs that will change the way games are developed.

Lower-level hardware abstraction

DirectX 12 now lets developers get closer to the “metal” of their users’ graphics hardware, providing access to features previously unavailable for developers. Exposing lower level hardware means that skilled developers can write more efficient code that executes faster. Specifically, developers can improve optimization with faster multi-threaded performance and more efficient CPU utilization. This could potentially allow for low-level optimizations similar to those we see in console gaming where games are tuned for extremely specific mid-range hardware, eeking out performance that would be impossible without such hyper-specific optimizations.

Previously, DirectX 11 only offered a fairly high level of hardware abstraction, which vastly simplifies the process of coding. In fact, that’s the whole idea behind what makes hardware APIs so powerful. But it also meant that opportunities for fine-tuning code against specific hardware features were less frequent. Microsoft’s Developer Blog provides some great insights into how, exactly, DirectX 12 accomplishes this.

Under DirectX 11 a significant portion of the CPU’s power is spent interpreting API instructions rather than executing game code. DirectX 12 reduces the API overhead, freeing up computation resources for running game code. This means that CPU-limited games could see greater performance, as their CPU power is freed up to handle game code. Most games aren’t CPU-limited today, but its possible that newer games will push this envelope further.

Explicit Multiadapter

DirectX 12 has the power to combine multiple GPUs (AKA “display adapters”) into a single logical unit. This feature, called Explicit Multiadapter, allows multiple GPUs to be instructed by software like a single GPU. For example, with DirectX 12 the integrated GPU on your machine can now tag team with your discrete GPU, lending its own processing power. Greater API support can also mean greater reliability and efficiency in multi-GPU SLI/CrossFire setups. In Microsoft’s testing using integrated graphics in tandem with discrete graphics provided a small but noticeable edge in benchmarks.

How Much Does DirectX 12 Matter for Gamers?

Like a lot of incremental improvements, gamers aren’t going to see night-and-day differences between DirectX 11 and DirectX 12. The new features don’t bring new rendering options that wow users. Nor will you see a 100 FPS jump between the two standards. But these gains in efficiency will eventually lead to greater performance on less powerful hardware, improving your PC’s power without upgrading its hardware.

However, if the latest drivers are installed, you can roll back the driver or download and install an earlier version of the driver.

If both updating and/or rolling back the driver didn’t work, you can uninstall the graphics driver, and then restart your PC – on boot, Windows will scan for hardware changes and automatically reinstall the generic driver for the display/video device which in some cases is sufficient enough for the graphics to function without issues.

5] Clean install NVIDIA graphics driver

To clean install the NVIDIA graphics driver on your Windows 11/10 computer, you first need to uninstall the graphics driver via Device Manager or alternatively use the Display Driver Uninstaller tool. Once done, you can then proceed with the clean install of the NVIDIA graphics driver as follows:

Open the download page for NVIDIA drivers.

Enter the required information including the NVIDIA driver and operating system in the boxes.

Scroll down the list until you find the required driver.

Open the downloaded driver on your computer and follow the on-screen instructions to install.

Once you reach the Installation options screen, select the Custom (Advanced) option.

Check the option to Perform a clean installation.

Once the driver installation completes, check to see if the error still appears. If so, try the next solution.

6] Modify GstRender settings

Do the following:

Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.

Navigate to Documents.

Explore your game folder.

Next, open the Settings folder.

Now, open the PROFSAVE_profile file with Notepad or any other Text Editor.

Locate the GstRender.Dx12Enabled command and change the value from 0 (zero) to 1.

Save the file.

Restart your game.

If this change causes additional issues, go back to PROFSAVE_profile and change the GstRender.Dx12Enabled command back to zero.

7] Disable Variable Refresh Rate and Hardware-accelerated GPU Scheduling

This solution requires you to disable Variable Refresh Rate for games and also disable Hardware-accelerated GPU Scheduling on your Windows 11/10 gaming PC.

Try the next solution if the issue persists.

8] Disable overclocking

This solution requires you to stop overclocking your CPU. So, if you have overclocked your PC, you can simply reverse the change depending on the overclocking software in use. Generally, launch the software and look for the option to stop the overclocking. Once done, restart your computer and see if the issue is resolved. Otherwise, proceed with the next solution.

9] Troubleshoot in Clean Boot state

Background programs can sometimes interfere with the games you’re playing causing them to crash and consequently throw errors. So, be sure to close all the background programs that you don’t need while gaming – do that prior to launching your game. Likewise, unnecessary system and cache files, processes, services present or running on your computer can trigger this error. In this case, you can troubleshoot in Clean Boot State and see if the issue at hand is resolved. Otherwise, try the next solution.

10] Uninstall and Reinstall the game

If nothing has worked so far for you, you can uninstall the game (preferably, use third-party software uninstaller), clear the game AppData folder contents, reboot the PC, and then download and reinstall the latest version of the game on your Windows 11/10 PC.

To clear/delete the game AppData folder contents, do the following:

Press Windows key + R to invoke the Run dialog.

In the Run dialog box, type the environment variable below and hit Enter.


At the location, find (you may need to show hidden files/folders) the problematic game folder.

Exit File Explorer when done.

The Difference Between Learners And Students

As academic standards shift, as technology evolves, and as student habits change, schools are being forced to consider new ways of framing curriculum and engaging students in the classroom. Project-based learning is among the most successful and powerful of these possibilities.

As both a planning and a learning tool, PBL challenges teachers to make new decisions about how they plan student learning experiences, while simultaneously empowering students to take a more active role in the learning process.

In this context of trying to make sense of exactly what progressive learning was, in 2009 I sketched out a graphic that visualized 9 Characteristics of 21st Century Learning, and recently created a follow-up framework, the Inside-Out Learning Model.

The four primary goals of this model of learning are:

Authentic self-knowledge

Diverse local and global interdependence

Adaptive critical thinking

New media literacies

Secondary goals include: purposefully leveraging the diversity of digital media, evolving the traditional definition of project-based learning, the role of play in learning, curiosity, and individualized learning pathways that are digitally curated and transparent to all direct and indirect stakeholders.

In the Inside-Out Learning Model, the idea is personalized learning by new actuators, the elimination of passivity, and full integration with responsive and authentic communities — not coincidentally, these are also elements of PBL.

The Background

While watching all the ed reform trends come and go, one visual that has often intrigued me is a school that’s literally been turned inside out.

This thought first occurred to me as a second-year teacher in rural Kentucky, struggling to clarify to the parents how their son or daughter was performing in the classroom. I found the letter grades incredibly misleading. Learners that were really making strong progress and “learning a lot” would often bring home Cs, while many “A students” would be doing just enough for that A.

And even then, these alphanumeric icons were simply describing trends and compliance, and expressed very little about understanding even as I shifted towards standards-based grading. With letter grades, an A represents complete and total mastery of content, while a B represents above-average understanding, and/or near mastery of content. C means average, and the idea of being “average” was jarring to students, but more so to parents.

C was a death knell, and many times even students with a B had some ‘splainin to do, and few seemed to notice this as a problem. There was a need for parents in the classroom, while students needed to be out in the community.

Learners vs. Students

So then, we come to this idea about the difference between learners and students — there definitely seems to be one.

Students hopefully learn, but the word “student” connotes compliance and external form more than anything intrinsic or enduring.

You might notice the “C students” silently piecing together the learning process for themselves — internalizing it, throwing out what didn’t work, struggling in spots, but all the while becoming learners. They’d rarely question grades or ask, “What can I do for an A?” Instead, they’d focus on the interaction between themselves and the content.

This startling contrast was nearly impossible to clarify for parents when they wanted to know “what was going on.” As a teacher, I wanted a class full of learners, but the grading process was giving me a lot of students who were learning to play the game. The problem, however, was not as much about letter grades and traditional academia as it was about the “form” of the school.

What do I mean by the “form” of the school?

Its physical layout

Its tone, from extracurricular programs to academic reputation, certificates, credits, and downright monstrous notions of “achievement”

The relative lack of diversity of its sources for academic and instructional content

The internal audiences for school projects

And most of all, the need for real interdependence between that school and the community it was funded by and built to serve

To move from students to learners — well, there are probably dozens of ways to make a move like this, but somewhere on that list is using technology, project-based learning, and place-based education to truly turn a school inside-out.

The Difference Between Revenue And Income

A company’s revenue is the total amount of money it receives from sales over a set time period. Income is how much of that revenue is left after you deduct the business’s expenses. Subtract income from revenue and you’ll get the company’s cost of doing business over the time period measured.

What is income?

Income is the number reflected at the bottom of a cash flow statement. It represents the amount left over after a business accounts for revenue and expenses over the same period (i.e., all the money flowing into and out of the company). Income could be negative if a company’s expenses exceeded its revenue during the period in question. In that case, the company has operated at a loss.

Measuring a business’s net income starts with looking at its revenue – how much money the company brought in over a set time period. Then the company makes adjustments for all expenses incurred over the same period. Those expenses could include the following:

Cost of goods sold

Labor costs

Rent and utilities

Fixed overhead

Marketing costs

Legal fees

Office expenses

Salaries for office personnel

Employee benefit costs

Like revenue, a company’s net income is also easy to calculate using small business accounting software, but it’s more involved. A manager needs to generate a report that includes revenue and expenses, particularly those relevant to its specific operations. (Report generation is a typical accounting software feature.)

Once a manager produces a report reflecting some measure of net income (usually a profit and loss statement, or P&L), they still need to know which metric to use and how to use it. That’s one of the challenges of business accounting: Software can provide a lot of information, but it doesn’t tell business owners how to use these insights.

While a business’s net income includes more information about the overall state of its finances, both revenue and income are essential for small business owners to know, measure and track. Later in 2011, the AMD Fusion mainstream platform – for regular and performance notebooks, and mainstream desktops – will arrive, with the 32nm die A-Series “Llano” APU, which includes up to four x86 cores and a DirectX 11-capable discrete-level GPU. The 2011 low power platform (formerly codenamed “Brazos”) enhances the everyday computing experience and is available beginning today in two APU variations: E-Series and C-Series. These APUs feature the new x86 CPU core codenamed “Bobcat”. “Bobcat” is AMD’s first new x86 core since 2003 and was designed from the ground up to deliver stellar mobile performance.

The 2011 mainstream platform is primarily intended for performance and mainstream notebooks and mainstream desktops. It will feature the 32nm die A-Series “Llano” APU, which includes up to four x86 cores and a DirectX 11-capable discrete-level GPU, and is scheduled to ship in the first half of 2011 and appear in products mid-year.

Jan. 4, 2011 — AMD today announced broad support for the AMD Fusion Family of Accelerated Processing Units (APUs) from the software and hardware ecosystem community. Working closely with software vendors, developers and motherboard suppliers, AMD has built a coalition of industry innovators committed to providing devices and applications that leverage the combined x86 computing power and discrete-level graphics performance of AMD Fusion APUs.
