Suggested March 2024 Tagmmer: A Visual Place For Your Files And Web Links
A while back, this little service called Tagmmer caught my attention as an interesting web-based alternative to such services as Dropbox and chúng tôi Being a viable alternative to one of the best cloud storage/cloud sharing applications, as well as (apparently) a powerful sharing application in its own right, I was interested to see how it worked. What It Is
Tagmmer is weird initially, but at its base it’s basically a service that lets you keep and share files and webpages. It’s intended to be both a link-sharing service and a Dropbox-like file-sharing service.
For a free cloud service, Tagmmer isn’t bad, offering 30GB of free storage to all tiers of its service. Once you’ve signed up and installed the appropriate Chrome extension, Tagmmer shows up as a button in your taskbar that you use to add various pages to your collection.
In order to add things, though, you need to seperate them into “Boards.” Boards come with names, descriptions and categories and can be set to Public or Private. Private boards can only be accessed through a direct sharing link, while Public boards can be accessed by anyone browsing Tagmmer or your profile.
When you’re adding something to a Board, you’re given the option to create boards, change title/description/icon for the content, and more. In this case, I’m adding a Reddit post to a board called “Interesting Reddit Stuff.”
Unfortunately, here is where I’ve discovered an issue with Tagmmer.
Basically, Tagmmer doesn’t directly link to content. Instead, it grabs content from the given URL and then attempts to load it in its own little container. Unfortunately for me, Reddit was broken for this, as were a few other sites I tried out. What I Think
Overall, I have a mixed opinion of Tagmmer. If it weren’t trying to be its own social media platform, I’d probably like it more, but as it stands, using its own (broken) wrappers for everything just doesn’t work for me, and as a cloud storage solution, it doesn’t come anywhere close to the great utility offered by solutions like chúng tôi or Dropbox.
That being said, this is a service in its infancy, and it’s March 2024 at the time of writing.
Since it’s a new app from a small startup, it just might improve. I certainly hope it does.
I’m a longtime gamer, computer nerd, and general tech enthusiast.

There’s no doubt that we’re in a very complicated time in terms of personal data. Most uneducated consumers don’t realize how much sensitive information is traded each time they log in to their favorite social media apps or use an in-home electronic assistant.
In turn, they’re unsuspectingly leaving hordes of details about their private lives out for anyone (or any corporation) to expose.
And that’s where web scraping comes in. Also referred to as web harvesting or web data collection, this process involves specialized software that collects information from a website and compiles it for other uses. Just like any other technological tool, the process can be used for both positive and negative purposes.
Here are a few things to consider when looking at the argument of whether web scraping should be considered illegal.Positive: Compilations of Data, Facts, and Figures
There are numerous benefits of using data scraping, and many businesses around the globe use the byproduct of this practice, whether they know it or not.
Those who feel data harvesting is not a threat, often cite the ability to compile data together from multiple websites in an easy and cost-effective fashion. From this perspective, the general thought is that anything put out on the internet is the same as having it in public view, thus making it general knowledge.
In some cases, they’re right. Web scraping powers the Wayback Machine, a website dedicated to providing previous editions of websites in a clear and easy-to-use manner.
This program makes it easy to look back at previous data, which is definitely a positive. But the technology used to attain the information is what concerns many in the industry.

However, there is a downside to the process of web scraping and using personal data for business purposes.
From a technical perspective, harvested data isn’t always easy to interpret or gives you the information you really need. For example, the information scraped using a software program might just be gibberish without any real context. It can also be the wrong information or data that has no real significance on the business you’re trying to conduct.
But the biggest and most hotly contested factor doesn’t deal with technical limitations. Rather, it has to do with the public’s understanding of web scraping and whether it is really an invasion of personal privacy.
Many individuals feel that any outside entity’s ability to pull random data from various public websites and compile it to come up with a specific conclusion is a form of privacy invasion. But, whether they like it or not, it isn’t really all that uncommon.
Marketing companies use this process all the time to try and predict likes, dislikes, and future moves of consumers. They have been doing so for a very long time.Protections Against Web Scraping and Data Mining
What this all basically comes down to is that website owners are responsible for protecting their customers and users from actions like web scraping and data mining.
By keeping certain sensitive pieces of information private, like banking transaction details or contact information, these organizations can help limit their risk of a breach and ensure positive customer satisfaction.
While that kind of sounds like a no-brainer, it really isn’t always the normal course for some major platforms. For example, Venmo got into a bit of hot water in 2023 by publicly publishing all transactions and keeping them in a database.
This meant that anyone who had a specific user’s username could see every single time they paid for a cup of coffee or sent a roommate half of the month’s rent.

Like with anything else in tech, there are certainly pros and cons to web scraping. While the process isn’t a big deal when it comes to innocent or general information, it can cause huge problems when you’re talking about very specific details about a website user’s lifestyle.
Thus, it is incredibly important for all website owners to pay extra attention when it comes to protecting certain pieces of data, as the practice is so widely used that it isn’t likely to go away anytime soon.

Study TipsLooking for a Place to Study for Finals? Check out these spots Let the cramming commence
Finals will soon come and go, and we will all move on from what has felt like an exhausting academic year. Before then, however, we have to make it through finals week, which means studying, studying, and more studying. When it comes time to stick your head in the books, it’s important to find a place where you can concentrate. For some, that place may be your room, for others, it may be the GSU. With that in mind, here’s a list of the best places to study on campus during finals week.Mugar Memorial Library Hours: open daily, 8 am to 11 pm
Mugar Memorial Library, the hub for studying, has made some adjustments to its schedule and offerings this semester. Therefore, to maximize your use of Mugar’s facilities, get there early because study spaces are on a first-come, first-served basis, with limited seating and earlier than normal closing time. Also, if you need to be in an isolated area while studying, use the Student Study App to reserve a private study room. Mugar is a great place to study—even with numerous students working at the same time you can almost always hear a pin drop.Educational Resource Center Hours: Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm

The Educational Resource Center (ERC) offers both casual and private study rooms on a first-come, first-served basis. Again, if you can study only in isolated spaces, visit the ERC’s fifth-floor receptionist desk and request the key to a room. Note, by securing a room, you must adhere to the ERC’s policies that include leaving after a maximum of two hours and leaving the space clean.Pardee Management Library Hours: Sunday, May 2, 11 am to 7 pm; Monday, May 3, through Thursday, May 6, 8 am to 7 pm; Friday, May 7, and Saturday, May 8, 10am-6pm

Pardee Management Library is on the Questrom School of Business third floor. While it is much smaller than Mugar, Pardee offers a number of casual and private and reservable rooms. The casual study spaces are first-come, first-served basis while the private study rooms can be reserved through the Student Study App. Pardee is a great place to study since it is typically empty, quiet, and has lots of natural sunlight.George Sherman Union (GSU)

The newly renovated George Sherman Union is a place that facilitates study, good eating, and conversation. It has an abundance of socially distanced, comfortable seating, available on a first-come, first-served basis, that provides you with enough isolation to focus while studying and encourages you to talk with peers if you need to ask a question. More important, the GSU has five eateries available at your convenience until 6 pm if you need a pick-me-up.Science and Engineering Library Hours: Sunday, May 2, noon to 7 pm; Monday, May 3, through Friday, May 7, 8 am to 7 pm; Saturday, May 8, 11 am to 6 pm

The College of General Studies has several study spaces to choose from. Two especially popular ones are the Gilbane Study Lounge on the first floor (Room 130) and the Katzenberg Center (Room 330) on the third floor. Plus, the first floor lobby, with a limited number of armchairs and plenty of natural sunlight, is open.
Disclaimer: because of COVID-19, the operating hours of many of these locations are different from those in a typical academic year.
Good luck on finals, Terriers. You’ve got this!

In the pursuit of new inbound links, people don’t always seek out new image links. We’ve been so conditioned to go after good editorial links that image links may be the last things on our minds as we reach out and try to increase traffic (and, let’s be honest, rankings) for our sites. However, there are several reasons why you should start paying more attention to image links.
They’re part of a natural link profile. Chances are that if you’ve never pursued image links but you check your external backlinks, you’ll find that you have more image links than you thought. Actually, I tried very hard to find websites that did not have any image links, and it was quite a chore. For more information on how to optimize your images for SEO, see Ann Smarty’s article.
They’re good for traffic because they’re more noticeable. On certain web pages, I’d argue that an image link might be better than a text link, actually. Based on user eyetracking patterns, an image in the F-shaped reading pattern is going to have a much better shot at generating traffic than a text link at the end of the content.
They can pass link juice. It might not be as much as a text link passes (and it probably shouldn’t, considering its origins and intended uses), but it’s still something.
They give off a warm, fuzzy vibe. Try and find a few image links that are used to link to something that the site owner hates. It’s tough to do. Almost everyone uses text links to funnel their negativity.
They can be optimized through keywords. Just as a hyperlink has anchor text, an image link has an alt (alternate text) attribute. If you used a screen reader, your browser did not load the image, or you were using a text-only browser, this would give the user a description of the image. Although it’s a great way to get your keywords in, it’s also ripe for abuse, unfortunately. While a long description may make more sense to a visually impaired user using a screen reader, if that tactic is overdone, it can definitely seem spammy.
They show up in image search results. Many site owners report that a great deal of their traffic comes from Google images, so it’s nothing to scoff at, if you’re the scoffing type.

Quora is a website headquartered near Google that was founded by people who were formerly associated with Facebook.
Quora is a question and answer website. Questions are asked and people answer them.
The practice of using Quora for link building is essentially the same strategy for forum spamming and profile link spamming.Forum Spam Tactic
Forum spamming is going to a community, answering questions and adding a link to your site for “more information.”
Some white hat SEOs view that as a win-win situation because you’re answering the question and linking to an article that has more information.
But most people who operate or moderate forum communities see this as spam.Profile Link Building Tactic
Profile link builders are people who visit a forum, make a few useless posts and then disappear.
The way this low quality spam tactic works is that when a forum member makes a post, there’s a link back to their profile from their profile shown in the discussion. Then on their profile page there is a link back to whatever site that is being promoted.
As a moderator at WebmasterWorld for around 16 years, I can affirm that profile link building is easy to spot and aggressively acted upon by competent moderators.Quora Link Building for Traffic
There are some who say that dropping (nofollow) links on Quora will result in massive traffic. It might result in a large amount of traffic but the traffic is highly likely to come from India.
Quora is highly popular in countries like India, Nepal and Bangladesh.
That kind of traffic is not useful if the traffic you seek is from the United States, Italy, France or UK.
Link building for traffic to a site that is not targeting India, China or Nepal is not a useful activity.
On a scale of 1 to 100, Google Trends ranks United States interest in Quora as a seven.
Clearly, link building on Quora for traffic is not realistic. Why Quora is a Link Building Target?
It’s common that the only people promoting nofollow links for ranking purposes are link builders who specialize in nofollow links for link building. Why Use Quora for Link Building
The person promoting Quora for link building asserted that Quora has a high Moz Domain Authority score and that means that some of that “authority” will trickle down through the more than 55 million pages of content and pass through the nofollow link to your website.
Related: What is Quora and Why Should You Care? What Does Google Think About Quora for Link Building?
Google’s John Mueller did not expressly say that Google ignores nofollow Quora links. He didn’t sound particularly enthusiastic about how great nofollow Quora links are either.Google on Link Building
Google’s stance on link building is that links that come from users who are not associated with the linked website are the best kinds. That’s what’s known as a natural link.
According to Google’s Webmaster Help page on link schemes:
“…creating links that weren’t editorially placed or vouched for by the site’s owner on a page, otherwise known as unnatural links, can be considered a violation of our guidelines.”
Clearly if the person who is adding a (nofollow) link to Quora has an association with the site that’s being linked to, that’s not an “editorially placed or vouched” link.
Given that high standard for what qualifies as a natural link, it may be useful to view Mueller’s remark that Google “isn’t missing sites that are link building on Quora…” to mean that they are aware of their nature as not being “editorially placed.”

Over the past few years, cloud storage services gained an enormous popularity. Many users use cloud services for backup, but managing your backups manually can become a problem.
There are many great tools that can help you to back up your files to cloud storage. If you’re looking for a cross-platform cloud backup software that can work with all major cloud services, you might want to consider CloudBerry Backup.CloudBerry Backup: A great multi-platform cloud backup solution Five different backup types available
Regarding the file backup, this software for Windows cloud backup supports the following backup types:
Cloud to Cloud backup
Cloud to Local backup
Local backup allows you to backup your files to the desired directory or drive on your PC. This feature is useful if you have an external hard drive that you use for file backup.
If you’re not a fan of local backup, you can always back up your files to one of many available cloud storage services using the Cloud backup feature.
It’s worth mentioning that the application also has a Hybrid backup feature that combines previous backup types into one. Using the Hybrid backup feature you’ll be sure that you have your backup available on both local drive and cloud storage.
CloudBerry Backup also allows you to migrate your files from one cloud storage to another using the Cloud to Cloud feature. To migrate your files, simply select the directories that you want to back up and select the desired cloud storage.
Lastly, there’s a Cloud to Local feature that will back up your files from the cloud storage to your local drive.
Speaking of your local drive, check out these backup software for external hard drives. They’ll come in handy in case anything goes wrong and you lose your files and folders.Scheduled backups, encryption, email notifications and more
As previously mentioned, CloudBerry Backup offers five different backup types, and each backup type can be customized. After you select the directory you want to back up, you can customize a wide array of options.
For example, you can choose the file types and directories you want to back up or skip.
You can also choose to backup files that are modified during a certain time period. Since all cloud storage services have limitations, you can choose not to back up files that exceed certain size. Of course, you can skip system and hidden files if you wish.
Another feature that we have to mention is Retention policy that allows you to delete outdated data from the cloud storage. This feature is rather useful if you want to save space and delete older versions of your files.
It’s worth mentioning that CloudBerry Backup supports 256-bit AES encryption, so your files will be automatically encrypted prior and during their upload to the cloud. Although file encryption is a great feature, keep in mind that encryption isn’t available for all cloud services.
The application also supports scheduling so you can easily schedule a one-time backup or create a recurring backup. This is useful if you want to create monthly, weekly, daily or hourly backups.
CloudBerry Backup also supports email notifications, so you can receive a notification message after a successful or failed backup. If needed, you can also add entries to Event Log if your backup is successful or if it fails.Compatibility with over 50 different cloud storage services
As we previously mentioned, CloudBerry Backup supports more than 50 different cloud storage services. Regarding the supported cloud storage services, the application works with major services such as:
Google Cloud Storage
Many other less-known cloud storage services are supported as well, and with support for more than 50 cloud storage services you won’t have any problems backing up your files.
CloudBerry Backup offers simple to use interface that allows you to easily see and edit your backup plans. You can also check all backup storage locations, your backup history as well as disk capacity from the main screen.
Block level backup
Command line interface
Thanks to block level backup, you’ll only upload modified or new pieces of data reducing the used bandwidth and storage space. Speaking of which, with built-in compression feature you can easily compress your files and speed up the backup process.CloudBerry Backup Pro vs Free edition
CloudBerry Backup for Desktop comes in two versions, Free and Pro, and there are some differences between the two. Both versions offer the following features:
Support for more than 50 different cloud storage services
Five different backup types
Availability on Windows, MacOS, and Linux
As for limitations, the Free version doesn’t offer encryption or compression. Another thing missing from the Free version is the email support, however, there’s a community support available.
We also have to mention that CloudBerry Backup for Desktop has data limits in both Free and Pro version. For example, in the Free version, you’re limited to 200GB of data which should be enough for home or basic users. On the other hand, the Pro version has a data limit of 5TB. It’s also worth mentioning that you can upgrade the data limit for both Free and Pro plans.
If you’re a server administrator, you might be interested in CloudBerry Backup Windows Server edition. This version offers several unique features including the following:
System State Backup
Bare Metal Restore
Restore to Cloud VM
It’s worth mentioning that CloudBerry Backup for MSPs and IT Service Providers version is available as well. This version is perfect for corporate use and IT professionals since it provides central management and monitoring for all your backups as well as cross-platform cloud backup. Conclusion
The Free version doesn’t come with drastic limitations, but if you want to reduce bandwidth usage, improve the backup speed and protect and encrypt your files, you might want to consider purchasing the Pro version.
You can use CloudBerry to back up data on your Windows Desktop, Windows Server, MS SQL Server and MS Exchange accounts. This is a reliable all-in-one solution.
