After years of false starts, the online storage market is suddenly for real. Vendors such as Dell, IBM, EMC and Google have been gobbling up online vendors faster than you can say “software as a service.”

Symantec Corp. entered the fray today. But rather than go the acquisition route, the security and disaster recovery company announced its own services: Symantec Online Backup and Symantec Online Storage for Backup Exec. The software-as-a-service (SaaS) storage offerings are designed to provide hosted data storage and disaster recovery services for small and mid-sized businesses.

The new online storage services fall under the Symantec Protection Network. According to Kevin Murray, senior director of product marketing at Symantec, Symantec Protection Network is designed to provide a suite of IT infrastructure technologies that share a common user interface. For example, customers can use a single portal for registration, consolidated billing and customer support model.

The online storage services are just the first of many services to come, Murray said. “There will be other things coming after this,” he said. However, he wouldn’t elaborate on what those services would entail.

Symantec Online Backup is designed to let smaller businesses store and manage data in Symantec-operated data centers. Pricing starts at $25 a month for 5GB of storage. Because Symantec Online Backup requires no up-front investment in hardware or software, Murray said it’s well-suited for small businesses that may not be currently performing regular backups.

Subscribers to Symantec Online Backup will, according to Symantec, have the flexibility to browse their data files, manage their protection settings and initiate restores from anywhere via an easy-to-use web browser interface over the Internet.

Symantec Online Storage for Backup Exec is integrated — as its name implies — with the Backup Exec 12 Windows data protection software, with the goal of creating a hybrid software-as-a-service solution. Backup Exec customers can now protect their data both onsite and offsite. For example, Murray said, businesses can use a single offering to back up and store data onsite with tape or disk and also store a copy of their data online for disaster recovery. This has the potential to help businesses address the challenges of tape proliferation and onsite and offsite tape management. Pricing starts at $38 for 10GB of storage.

The goal of Symantec Solutions for Windows portfolio, according Murray, is to bring together key Symantec endpoint security, storage management, backup and recovery, archiving and policy compliance technologies.

In addition to support for Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Backup Exec 12 now integrates with Symantec’s ThreatCon global security alerting system (“If ThreatCon changes, frequency of backup changes,” Murray said), Enterprise Vault to protect e-mail archives and the new Symantec Protection Network for accessing offsite storage. The company claims that Backup Exec 12 also introduces faster backup and restore of Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server, Active Directory and SharePoint environments as well as support for non-Microsoft environments.

Backup Exec System Recovery 8 now features flexible offsite protection and enhanced recovery capabilities and integration with Symantec security and systems management solutions, according to the company. Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 8 supports Symantec ThreatCon and Altiris Notification Server and also offers onsite and offsite backups and enhanced granular recovery capabilities, including recovery to dissimilar hardware or virtual environments.

Symantec said that Backup Exec System Recovery 8 now allows administrators to automatically copy recovery points to a remote server using FTP or to an external hard drive or network share. A new Granular Restore Option is designed to let organizations recover Microsoft Exchange mailboxes, folders, messages and attachments; individual Microsoft SharePoint documents; and individual files or folders in minutes from a single, multi-tab interface.

As with Backup Exec 12, Backup Exec System Recovery 8 also includes integration with Symantec’s ThreatCon global security alerting system to enable system recovery points to be captured immediately and automatically in the event of an elevated Internet ThreatCon level.

Finally, also new with Backup Exec System Recovery 8 is Restore Anyware technology for dissimilar hardware and physical-to-virtual restoration. Backup Exec System Recovery 8 taps virtualization technology to offer physical-to-virtual and virtual-to-physical conversions to VMware ESX Server, VMware Server, VMware Workstation and Microsoft Virtual Server formats.

Bing Deals: Microsoft Enters Daily Deal Space

On Friday, Microsoft launched a new version of Bing Deals that will aggregate over 200,000 of the best local deals from Groupon, LivingSocial, other deal sites, and traditional retailers such as Nordstrom and Target. These partnerships are in addition to Microsoft’s ongoing deal with The Dealmap, which was acquired by Google earlier this year.

Although the number of daily deal sites has recently decreased, there are still over 300 sites serving daily deals. Although consumer interest in daily deal sites continues to increase, many of consumers are experiencing “deal fatigue,” which is primarily a result of being served an overwhelming number of non-relevant deals. In a recent survey, 87% of consumers indicated they would purchase more daily deals if all of the deals were conveniently located on one site. Bing Deals will allow consumers to quickly search, find, and purchase daily deals without additional clutter in their inbox.

Bing representative Lisa Gurry wrote the following regarding Bing’s new deal aggregator service:

“Instead of building another program, we’re harnessing deals from major providers and retailers, including Groupon, LivingSocial, Nordstrom, Target and many others, to help you cut through the clutter and find the best deals in one central location. Although Bing Deals will not be directly competing with Groupon, LivingSocial, Google Offers, or other deal sites, competition in the deal aggregation market niche is also fierce. Cloud storage works on a pretty basic principle- Data is sent to and received from a storage device that safely stores the data. Cloud storage has its own set of regulations and architecture. Open Source Storage Takes On Raid

Linux and other open source technologies are found in a broad range of enterprise storage technologies, the full extent of which isn’t known because vendors don’t generally talk about their underlying platforms and analysts don’t track them. Santa Clara, Calif.-based Open Source Storage, on the other hand, is using its underlying technologies as a selling point for a trio of new RAID offerings.

The actual operating system used by Open Source Storage on the RAID solutions varies depending on the client, and the choice may extend beyond Linux. Eren Niazi, president, CEO and founder of Open Source Storage, explained that Fortune 100 clients typically use Solaris as their chosen OS.

On the enterprise Linux side, Niazi noted that some customers don’t like the price tag associated with traditional enterprise offerings, so Open Source Storage uses something called CentOS. CentOS is a Red Hat Enterprise Linux “clone” that is unaffiliated with Red Hat. CentOS uses the same basic source as Red Hat, but is supported via an open source community effort. Red Hat’s own community distribution, Fedora Core, is also a potential option for Open Source Storage customers.

Niazi noted that his firm provides OS benchmarks and customers choose based on their own needs. Custom options are also available. “If they ask us to recompile the kernels, we have a programming team that can reprogram things, create drivers and things like that as well,” Niazi said.

“All we’re doing is tailoring the software to meet customer needs,” said Niazi.”We don’t like to reinvent the wheel too much.”

Niazi said he ran into a lot of skepticism at first when he decided to launch a storage company based on open source technologies.

“When I started the company in 2001, a lot of people laughed,” Niazi said. “They said a lot of people have failed at what you are doing, you’re going to fail. We’ve now grown to millions and millions of sales.”

Although open source is the company’s core focus, that doesn’t mean Niazi will turn away a customer who wants to use Microsoft with the company’s solutions. “First, we’ll try and educate how open source will save money, but if not, we’ll still help him out,” he said.

Although Open Source Storage makes use of open source software, it’s not above patenting its own hardware technology. Niazi said the company will be launching a new patent-pending vertical patch panel that increases cooling and minimizes the required amount of cabling.

Patents have been generally looked down upon by the open source community as “non-open,” but Niazi doesn’t see any issue with patenting the new hardware product.

“The patch panel is a piece of sheet metal,” Niazi said. “It’s our design that can be used in any configuration. The only reason we patented it is we don’t want people to copy our patch panel design. But all of our hardware inside the system is open standards, the software is open standards. The only thing we’re patenting is a mechanical difference that will make us excel versus the competition.”
