Suggested January 2024 Switchhud Makes It Easy To Toggle Between Iphone Volume Modes

The two most commonly-used volume modes in iOS are the ringer volume and media volume. The ringer volume controls the volume of text tones, ring tones, and notification sounds, while the media volume controls the volume of your music and videos.

The only problem is, iOS likes to default to the ringer volume all the time, unless you have media playing. If you do, that’s the only time the volume buttons will actually change the media volume level.

If you don’t like that solution, then hold on to your seats, because we’re going to be showing you a new free jailbreak tweak called SwitchHUD, which takes volume switching to the next level by letting you manually toggle between the two at any time with an Activator action.

The problem with iOS volume

Every time I want to prepare my volume to watch a movie or listen to a song, my instinctive move is to press the volume up or volume down button. To my dismay, I always see that stupid “ringer” HUD come up, and it always reminds me that I need to open Control Center to adjust my media volume beforehand.

I really never liked the way iOS handled volume, because sometimes after watching a movie or listening to a song at a high volume, I’ll forget to reduce the volume when it’s finished, and the next time I go to use it, it’ll automatically be set to full blast and I’ll blow an eardrum out before I can even adjust it.

Of course, iOS lets you adjust the media volume of your device once media is finally playing, but at that point, it could already be in the middle of blowing your eardrums out. Doesn’t that sound wonderful?

SwitchHUD to the rescue

After opening Cydia today, I discovered a new jailbreak tweak called SwitchHUD, which appears to magically rid me of this problem.

SwitchHUD integrates with Activator so that I can manually toggle between volume modes on my iOS device. This lets me choose what my volume buttons are going to adjust on demand, rather than opening Control Center to handle one type of volume and using the volume buttons to handle the other.

Now, I am able to set my ringer at a comfortable level for use 100% of the time and just use the ringer/silent switch when I decide I don’t want to hear it anymore, and this tweak lets me use my volume buttons for the media volume that I am frequently and intentionally adjusting when playing songs or movies.

The nice part about this is I can use my volume buttons 100% of the time to adjust either type of volume that I want to, whether media is playing or not. With a simple Activator action, I can toggle between the two.

Configuring SwitchHUD

SwitchHUD adds a preferences pane to the Settings app where you can toggle the tweak on or off on demand, as well as choose the Activator action that you wish to invoke to toggle between the two volume modes:

We’ve chosen double-tapping on the Status Bar for the Activator action because it’s something that you can do from anywhere in iOS, rather than from a specific part of iOS.

Now when we double-tap on the Status Bar, we’ll get the media volume, and then if we double-tap on the Status Bar again, we’ll get the ringer volume, etc.

My thoughts on StatusHUD

If I didn’t make it clear enough already, the volume settings on my iPhone have almost always been the bane of my existence.

On the other hand, I find that StatusHUD is a great way to have more control over what volume you adjust with your actual volume buttons on demand whether you have media playing or not.

The tweak gains come serious brownie points from me because it does something I really like, but the fact that it’s free and simple to use makes me say I have to recommend this tweak to everybody.

StatusHUD can be downloaded for free from Cydia’s BigBoss repository right now. If you want to have manual control over what volume you’re going to adjust with the volume buttons, then this is the tweak for you.

Catch Notes Makes It Easy To Capture And Collaborate On Ideas

The app has a clean, minimalist design with bright colors and attractive icons. It is easy to find what you need and you are not bogged down with too many buttons, dropdown menus, or sideswipes.

The app comes with five category sections, but you can add one more by logging in with your Facebook or Google account. You can also buy more with in-app purchases. The categories can be identified by different colors. You can choose from six different colors to make your categories pop.

When you are ready to create a new idea, all you have to do is tap the big plus (+) button at the bottom of the screen. A handful of options will appear, like reminders, pictures, voice memos, and more.

App Use

When you first open the app, you will be asked to log in by connecting to Facebook or Google, or by signing up with your email address. If you are not sure that you are ready to commit yet, skip the log in and go directly to the app.

There will already be a few categories set up as samples for you with a couple of tips and tricks. You can easily delete these categories by tossing them in the trash. To make your own category, tap the “Create New Space” tab at the bottom of the screen.

When the category creation window pops up, enter the title and pick a color to go with it. For example, you may want to create a category for ideas for your upcoming novel. You could title it “Book Ideas” and make it blue.

After you’ve created a category, you can immediately start adding ideas. Tap the gray button at the bottom of your screen. You can add reminders, take pictures or add them from your camera roll, add a note, record a voice memo, and create a checklist.

If you want to share your categories with others, tap the share icon to add them from your contacts list. You can add as many collaborators as you like. They will have to log into Catch in order to access the info.

You can also email all of your ideas directly to someone by tapping on its share button instead of inviting someone to collaborate on the entire category. If you give an idea a star, it will be added as a special notification so that you can quickly access it if you have a large list of ideas to look through.

The Good

I love how easy it is to add new ideas. The big button at the bottom of the screen brings up icons that make it easy for you to start jotting down ideas without any effort.

The Voice Memo feature is a great bonus. I use my Voice Memo app all of the time to make quick notes for myself, so having the same ability inside the app makes it easier to keep everything all in one place.

The Checklist feature is perfect for people who tend to make lists a lot. It can be used for sharing grocery lists, packing for travel, ideas for gifts, etc.

The Bad

The free app is limited in what you get. If you go beyond 250MB of storage, you have to upgrade to add more. Catch offers a Pro account for $4.99 per month and a Premium one for $15.99 per month. But if you don’t want to pay a monthly subscription fee, you are stuck at 250MB, no matter how many new categories you pay for.

Since it is free to download, the value is great. It is easy to use and offers just enough features to make you feel like you can be really productive without making you feel like you have to jump through hoops to work with it. It is a real time saver. The additional cost to add more categories (or, Spaces, as they are called) is unnecessary. Especially since you are limited to only 250MB of space. If you want more categories, you may need to buy the Pro account.

This app is great for capturing ideas on the fly and makes it possible for you to collaborate with other users for a very efficient productivity app. If you are looking for an app that lets you jot down or record ideas that you can share with multiple recipients, Catch Notes may be what you need. This app is available for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Download it in the App Store today.

Putting Tech In Cars Makes It Easier For Hackers To Start Your Car

There’s a trend that has taken shape through the 2010s. Everything is now connected. Your washing machine? It has an app! Your doorbell? There are several options available that let you see who’s in front of your door from your smartphone. This app frenzy gives us the possibility of making our lives immeasurably more convenient, but what role does security play in all of this?

A Little Background

Back in 2013 we discussed built-in mobile software installed in vehicles. At that point we could only conceive of dangers to the driver while texting and driving and how this evolution would affect the trend. Since then the possibilities have expanded, raising many more concerns.

We live in a world that allows someone the ability to perform many functions otherwise done with a physical key using a phone. The shift from ignition key to mobile device puts even more of a burden on our phones, making them responsible for yet another crucial function of our daily lives. We must begin to ask ourselves whether this reliance is healthy and whether it is safer than the previous way of doing things.

The reality is that hackers can and do present challenges to the implementation of remote vehicle access technology.

How Hackers Ruin the Party

A recent piece published on Wired shows us that researchers at Kaspersky have discovered some ways that hackers can definitely compromise remote ignition applications installed on smartphones. They’ve concluded that this can be done in one of three ways:

A hacker can simply grab the authentication data from the phone. In most cases the app doesn’t even bother to encrypt it.

A hacker could install a fake version of the app that would grab the user’s login credentials when they try entering.

A hacker could infect the phone with malware that hooks onto the real app and stores whatever input the user types in.

The first method is the easiest (and the one I am most concerned about) since it doesn’t require a hacker to manipulate his victim into downloading anything. Installing malware on a phone with its default settings is much more cumbersome. One of the first rules of hacking is to find the path of least resistance!

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that using a key in your car isn’t the most inconvenient thing in the world. Your best method of prevention is just to use your car the same way people have been using theirs since before we ever had computers in our homes. Other than that, your best bet is to exercise as much prudence as possible with what you download and ensure that your phone’s screen cannot be unlocked with a simple slide of the finger.

Nothing will keep you one-hundred percent safe from a hacker siphoning your data. For example, aside from the three methods stated above, a hacker can also compromise your data by sniffing your WiFi traffic. Unlocking your car through your phone might just prove more of a hurdle than it’s worth.

Remote Desktop Error Code 0X104: 5 Easy Ways To Fix It

Remote Desktop Error Code 0x104: 5 Easy Ways to Fix It Check the best solutions for quick troubleshooting

The Error code 0x104 appears when trying to remotely connect to another PC using the Remote Desktop feature.

It usually arises due to misconfigured network or firewall settings but can also be a result of incorrect credentials.

To fix the issue, change the name of the exchange server, disable the active VPN, and run the critical services, amongst other solutions.

To fix Windows PC system issues, you will need a dedicated tool

Fortect is a tool that does not simply cleans up your PC, but has a repository with several millions of Windows System files stored in their initial version. When your PC encounters a problem, Fortect will fix it for you, by replacing bad files with fresh versions. To fix your current PC issue, here are the steps you need to take:

Download Fortect and install it on your PC.

Start the tool’s scanning process to look for corrupt files that are the source of your problem

RDP or Remote Desktop Protocol, as the name suggests, allows users to access another computer remotely, i.e., without being physically present. But the connection is not as stable as many would imagine, with Error code 0x104 frequently encountered by some.

This poses a major problem, given that the feature to remotely gain access to the PC has gained prominence over the years. Though there are several third-party apps to establish remote access, let’s first try to fix the Error code 0x104 with Microsoft remote desktop.

What is error code 0x4 in Microsoft Remote Desktop?

As per the error message, Error code 0x104 arises when Windows can’t find the remote PC, and subsequently, the connection cannot be established. Here are a few reasons you might be getting the error:

The Remote Desktop feature is disabled: For the feature to work, you must first enable Remote Access in Windows. And if it’s disabled, the error will show up.

Misconfigured firewall settings: You may come across Error code 0x104 if the firewall settings are misconfigured.

Network Discovery is turned off: Enabling Network Discovery is critical for your PC to identify others on the network and remotely connect to them.

Incorrect DNS server: An incorrect DNS is just as likely to trigger the error, but this can easily be fixed.

How can I fix error code 0x104?

Before we head to the slightly complex solutions, here are a few quick ones to try:

Turn on the Airplane Mode on the device you are using to connect to the remote desktop, disable it in 15-30 seconds, and then try establishing a connection.

Change the name of the exchange server to something simple in case the current one is lengthy or intricate.

When remotely connecting to the desktop via a mobile phone, try switching the network type. Say, if you are one 4G, try 3G, 4G LTE, or 5G if available.

Try establishing a connection using the PC’s IP address (check in the desktop settings) instead of the PC name, and verify if Error code 0x104 is fixed.

Make sure Port Forwarding is enabled on your router, and contact the ISP (Internet Service Provider) to help configure a port forwarding rule for mapping an external port using TCP 3389.

If you are using a VPN while trying to remotely access the PC, disable it.

If these don’t work, move to the ones listed next.

1. Make sure Remote Desktop is enabled

Expert tip:

2. Enable Network Discovery 3. Modify firewall settings

After you have made the changes, check whether the Error code 0x104 while using Remote Desktop is fixed. If not, head to the next solution.

4. Run the critical services 5. Change network settings

That’s it! If the previous solutions didn’t work, settings the DNS service to automatic should help fix Error code 0x104 in Windows.

Also, do not forget to check the best remote desktop software for gaming without any lags or drops in FPS. For regular use, most recommend Mikogo, a popular and easy-to-use alternative. It has many useful features, like hosting meetings, a session scheduler, and session recording.

Iphone Screen Not Rotating? How To Fix It

iPhone rotation enables you to watch a video on full screen, use the device comfortably in bed, enable more options (like in the Calculator app), etc. If your iPhone screen is not rotating according to how you hold the device, here are the sure-shot solutions to fix this issue. Take a look.

1. Turn off portrait orientation lock on iPhone

This is the first thing to ensure the iPhone screen rotates. When portrait orientation lock is enabled, your iPhone screen will stay in portrait mode and not rotate to landscape mode (except in certain apps like YouTube with their additional rotating mechanism).

To turn off the screen rotation lock, follow the steps below.

2. Not all apps are designed to work in landscape mode!

Every app does not rotate. This includes Apple as well as third-party apps downloaded from the App Store.

For example, on my iPhone 11, inbuilt apps like Phone, Music, App Store, Weather, Reminder, Health, etc., do not rotate. But iMovie, Settings, Contacts, Safari, Messages, Calendar, Files, etc., rotate freely.

Interestingly, a few apps like Books do not rotate when you are inside them navigating the catalogs, etc. But when you are reading a book, the screen rotates.

The elements (buttons, options) in FaceTime do not rotate. But when you are on a call, the actual video rotates.

In the Camera app, the icons for switching cameras, flash, and photo thumbnail slightly rotate while the rest of the options stay as they are.

Let us now talk about third-party apps. WhatsApp, Gmail, Twitter, and more rotate into landscape mode. But my favorite payment app – Paytm, Microsoft Authenticator, Instagram, etc., do not rotate.

Thus, we can infer that there is no fixed rule for app rotation. It depends on the app developer if they allow you to rotate the screen or not.

Now, let us talk about Home Screen rotation. You can rotate the iPhone Home screen into landscape mode on Plus and Max models (like iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 12 Pro Max, etc.). But on the smaller models (like my iPhone 11 despite having a huge 6-inch screen or my tiny iPhone 6s), the Home Screen does not rotate.

Additionally, some apps like Settings rotate on my big iPhone 11 but not on the smaller iPhone 6s.

Conclusion: Screen rotation depends on the app and the iPhone model you are using. In general, most apps allow rotation. To check if screen rotation is working perfectly or not, open the Safari app (it is known to rotate on all iPhone models). Now, turn your iPhone. If it rotates, everything is ok.

3. Force quit the iOS app

Even after following the above solutions, iPhone screen rotation is not working? In this case, force quit the app and start afresh.

4. Restart your iPhone

This has helped me in the past to fix minor issues like iPhone not rotating the screen. To restart your iPhone, turn it off like you usually do. After a minute, switch it on. The problem of the iPhone screen not rotating will be resolved!

Tip: If your iPhone is not updated, ensure you download and install the latest available version of iOS.

5. Turn off display zoom view

Do you use zoomed display settings? If yes, certain apps won’t rotate unless you set the screen settings to standard. For example, on my iPhone 11, the Settings app screen won’t rotate when using the zoomed view. But other apps like Safari etc., rotate.

In short, to ensure that all compatible apps rotate freely, follow the steps below to turn off display zoom.

6. Reset all iPhone settings

Did none of the solutions above help? In this case, go ahead and reset all iPhone settings. Once it completes, your iPhone screen should rotate flawlessly.

Note: Resetting all settings won’t delete personal photos, apps, music, videos, app data, and things like these. However, all settings you have ever added or changed will fall back to the default state. This includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, VPN, notification, keyboard, etc.
