After launching its first-ever 5G smartphone towards the end of last year, Redmi took the wraps off its second 5G, as well as second flagship, smartphone at an online event in China today. Redmi K30 Pro is finally official and it has two variants – a standard and a Zoom Edition. Display
On the front though, Redmi K30 Pro is sticking with my favorite bezel-less, notch-less design that we’ve seen on its predecessor earlier last year. The device features a 6.67-inch Full-HD+ AMOLED display with zero cutouts whatsoever and surprisingly, a 60Hz refresh rate in 2023. We learned this harsh truth last week and it’s a shame that Redmi is dropping the ball on this trend (being adopted by most phone makers) with its newest flagship.
Also, the display panel has been sourced from Samsung and boasts a 20:9 aspect ratio, 2340 x 1080p resolution, 180Hz touch sampling rate, 1200nits of peak brightness, and HDR10+ support. Redmi K30 Pro retains the pop-up selfie camera that we saw on its predecessor, with the notification LED feature intact. But, it builds on the same by now allowing you to pick custom colors for different situations.
Internals and Software
Being a flagship in 2023 means the Redmi K30 Pro is powered by the Snapdragon 865 chipset, coupled with up to 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. It supports read and write speeds up to 777MB/s, which is amazing.

Don’t Believe The Hype: Redmi Note 12 Pro+ 200Mp Camera Disappoints
Redmi Note 12 Pro+ fails to impress on DXOMark’s review
The Redmi Note 12 Pro+ is a decent phone with an AMOLED screen, a powerful chipset, 120W charging, and a 200 MP main camera. However, there is much more beyond the numbers, and this camera failed to achieve a good score. As per the DXOMark tests, the 200 MP has a lackluster performance. There is a lot of marketing around this main camera, but it has an overall rating of 113 points. It gives the Redmi Note 12 Pro the 74th position on DxOMark’s leaderboard. Well, we know that this is a mid-range phone. But considering how new it is, and all the marketing around the 200 MP camera, it could be much better.
The Redmi Note 12 Pro+ falls shortly off the iPhone 11 with its tiny 12 MP camera, as well as the Pixel 6. The Nothing Phone (1) and Xiaomi 12T perform better, despite their inferior cameras in terms of megapixel count. As we’ve stated before, there is more beyond the numbers.
According to DXOMark, the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ does a decent job in daylight. It manages to deliver a decent dynamic range and white balance even in low light conditions. Further, automatic exposure does its job in both day and night environments. However, there is some sort of ghosting, color, and artifact issues. The autofocus is also slow and the 4K video recording is not good. There is a loss of details and oversharpened images when you’re trying to record 4K footage.
Besides the 200 MP main camera, the other sensors are also mediocre. The 8 MP ultrawide camera with f/2.2 is nothing to write about, moreover the zooming capabilities are just the standard without a telephoto shooter. Again, that’s one of the main problems in these mid-range phones with “impressive” main cameras. They deliver a main camera with a high amount of raw megapixels, and standard cameras. In the end, the experience is not the best. It sounds good but is just around the average.
The specificationsBesides the modest camera performance, the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ might be considered a good jack of all trades for some users. The phone sells for €499,00 in Europe, so this is not exactly a budget phone.

Recently, the company has officially announced the new flagship for global markets, alongside the respective version of MIUI made for the global audience. Besides the new software skin and flagship, the company used the opportunity to reveal details about its progress. Despite the ongoing pandemic that ravaged the market last year, the brand managed to become the third-largest smartphone brand in the world. Redmi brand also broke some records last year.
According to the brand’s report, it is the first smartphone brand in ten markets, which includes India as one of the most notable ones. Moreover, it achieved at least the third position in 36 markets. The Chinese giant also is the fastest-growing brand in the high-end segment with an impressive 3,639% growth year on year in Q3 2023. This includes devices that cost more than $500.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Review
Our Verdict
The Redmi Note 7 is not Redmi as you know it. Featuring a gorgeous all-glass – and very Mi 9-esque – design, a dual-camera with 48Mp lens, a large, decent-quality screen and all-day battery life, this is a mid-range phone with a budget price. It bucks recent trends with a headphone jack and an IR blaster, and impresses with dual-SIM functionality and microSD storage expansion. A few more premium features are missing, alongside NFC, but it’s difficult to argue with the value it offers.
Xiaomi has announced its Redmi Note 9 series, but until they are easily available you may find better value in the Redmi 7 series, including this Redmi Note 7.
Retailing direct from Xiaomi from £179 (3GB/32GB), you’ll find significantly cheaper options if you shop around online. Right now the 4GB RAM, 64GB storage model is available from GearBest for £147.60. You’ll pay Xiaomi £199 for this same option.
Following a Chinese launch in January 2023 the Redmi Note 7 officially went on sale in the UK on 7 May, charging straight into the top spot in both our UK and Chinese budget phone charts. Nine months on it still finds a home in third place, and now offers even better value. It was the first phone from newly spun-off Xiaomi sub-brand Redmi, and as such it marks a huge departure from Redmi as you previously knew it.
Headlining is a 48Mp dual-lens camera, and Redmi Note 7 was actually the first Xiaomi phone to pack such a high megapixel count – though Mi 9 then came along and did it better. There are some similarities between this budget phone and Xiaomi’s flagship, but Redmi Note 7 is much more closely aligned in specs and performance with the Oppo F11 Pro.
It’s also got a large 6.3in Full-HD+ screen and promises all day runtime from a 4000mAh battery with Quick Charge 4 support. Plus some users will be very happy to see the inclusion of a traditional 3.5mm headphone jack.

Redmi Note 7 Design & BuildRedmi Note 7 is not all that dissimilar in design to the flagship Mi 9, which packs a fractionally larger (6.39in) screen into an ever so slightly smaller chassis. Both have tall 19.5:9 panels and slim bezels – naturally slimmer on the Mi 9, but the only place this is really obvious to the untrained eye is on its smaller chin.
Each also feature a Dot Drop (waterdrop-style) notch to maximise the available screen space and house the selfie camera, which is more obvious on Mi 9 with its larger 20Mp sensor (Redmi Note 7 has a 13Mp front camera). There’s also a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it slit at the extreme edge between the screen and frame for the earpiece.
Around the back you’ll find some more obvious differences, however, with a dual- rather than triple lens camera on the Redmi Note 7, the Redmi rather than Mi logo, and a physical fingerprint sensor. All members of the flagship Mi 9 family now use an in-display fingerprint sensor.
Arguably physical fingerprint sensors typically work better than these early in-display versions, and though it might be a fancy new feature to have the omission is not a game-changer.
We tested the Black version so were unable to enjoy the gradient finish of the Blue model, but in pictures it looks gorgeous. With a glass back and front the Redmi Note 7 has a very premium design for a phone at this price point, and is only fractionally thicker than Xiaomi’s flagship family at 8.1mm, though you will notice that glossy frame is plastic rather than metal. That extra space inside the case enables it to include a capacious 4,000mAh battery, too, matching the spec of the recently announced Mi 9T.
Something you won’t find on Mi 9 phones (save for the Mi 9T) is the Redmi Note 7’s 3.5mm headphone jack, which sits on the top edge of the phone alongside another increasingly rare feature: an IR blaster. While phone makers are rapidly making the switch over to USB-C audio, there are still plenty of users who want to use their existing earphones without an adaptor. Redmi Note 7 also has a bottom-firing mono speaker for audio.
At 6.3in the display is expansive, and ideal for watching high-resolution video and playing games. This is not the same AMOLED technology on Mi 9, but it’s still good for the money, and actually nearly as bright – we recorded 398 nits using a Spyder. With a 2340×1080 Full-HD+ resolution everything is super-clear, too.
Although the Redmi Note 7 runs MIUI 10, on our review sample the system-wide Dark Mode setting found in the flagships is not available. It’s possible this will come in the next update, with the Redmi running 10.3.2.0 and our Mi 9 running 10.3.3.0. This is useful not only because it seems to be the latest trend to do everything in Dark Mode, but because it drastically reduces the screen’s impact on battery life.
The Redmi Note 7 also lacks the Ambient Display (always-on) mode found in Xiaomi flagships, which can additionally help you maintain battery life by reducing the frequency with which you feel you need to wake the phone to check the time or notifications. That could be an issue here, since Redmi Note 7 has the most ridiculous notification LED we’ve ever seen – it flashes up below the screen but is the tiniest little dot you could easily miss it completely.
None of Xiaomi’s current smartphone line-up is waterproof, though we wouldn’t necessarily expect to find this feature at this price anyhow. Xiaomi also keeps down costs by excluding wireless charging from this phone, though it does support Quick Charge 4 and is supplied with a 10W USB-C charger in the box.
As with all Xiaomi phones you’ll also find a silicon case is supplied, a nice touch given that these are not easily obtainable in UK High Street stores. The Note 7 does feature Gorilla Glass 5 to help protect it from scratches, but it is not infallible.
Redmi Note 7 Core Hardware & PerformanceThe Note 7 is fitted with a 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 14nm chip, which integrates an 850MHz Adreno 512 GPU. This is a step down from the also mid-range Snapdragon 712 and 730 found in the Mi 9 SE and 9T, but there’s not a huge difference in performance – at least not anything the average user would be able to perceive – as you’ll see in the comparison chart below.
You’ll have seen this chip before, in the likes of the Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite, Xiaomi Mi A2, Nokia 7 Plus, Samsung Galaxy A9, Elephone U Pro and so forth. It’s quite a popular processor. And while Redmi Note 7 is not significantly faster than any of those other phones that use it, something you should note is that it is significantly cheaper.
The Redmi Note 7 offers capable – if not flagship – daily performance, and provided you don’t turn up the detail too much some very playable framerates. In GFXBench’s T-Rex and Manhattan tests we recorded 46- and 21fps, for example.
The 4000mAh battery inside is good for a day’s use, but no more. In Geekbench 4’s battery test we recorded 7 hours 16 minutes, which is actually a pretty middling score and a little lower than we had anticipated given the huge capacity of the battery.
As we mentioned earlier on in this review you get a choice of 3- or 4GB of RAM. We tested the latter, and this is the version we recommend for the best performance, especially when it costs only an extra £20.
In terms of connectivity there’s also dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS and an IR blaster. You will not find NFC for making mobile payments, so if this is important to you step up to the Mi line.
Redmi Note 7 Cameras & PhotographyFor a budget phone the Redmi Note 7’s cameras are pretty good, though not quite as good as the marketing might have you believe.
The star of the show is a 48Mp lens that by default actually takes 12Mp shots. This is because it combines four pixels into one, averaging out the quality, exposure, colours and so on to create one significantly better-looking super pixel.
This is paired with a 5Mp secondary lens for blurred background (bokeh) shots, and together the Note 7 is capable of some decent – if a little dull – photography, given good lighting. Zoom right in and some noise is visible, but zoomed out the results are more than acceptable for a sub-£200 phone.
In low lighting the camera has more work to do, and even in Night mode it still struggles. Here you need to be really careful to keep the camera still for what feels like forever as it processes the shot. Though it did a good job of picking out different colours, including the different shades of black, text can be a little fuzzy and edges less well defined. Not a bad result, but equally not the best.
This is an AI camera, which means Xiaomi’s software can intelligently set an appropriate preset for the shooting scenario. The app is very easy to use, and you can quickly switch between photo and video, Portrait, Night, Square, Panorama and Pro modes, and there’s a shortcut for preinstalled Google Lens right within the app, too.
There’s also an option to shoot in 48Mp, though all this is going to really do for you is gobble through your storage, since the results are not any better for the extra pixels.
The Redmi Note 7 supports 1080p video capture at 30- or 60fps with image stabilisation, but 4K and slow-mo video is off limits.
Around the front is a 13Mp AI camera for selfies, and in this mode the app offers quick access to various beauty settings.

Redmi Note 7 SoftwareThe Redmi Note 7 runs MIUI 10, which is a custom version of Android 9 Pie. Since we’re using a Global ROM model it comes preinstalled with Google services and an English-language keyboard and interface, so setup is as simple as on any Android phone.
You will find Xiaomi offers its own version of most Google apps, which does mean there’s some duplication here, and most cannot be deleted (or removed from the app tray-less home screen, though you can tuck them away in a folder where they will remain out of sight and out of mind). This is for good reason, since Chinese ROM MIUI devices don’t have those Google apps. Some of these apps are pretty decent, however, so either use them, or don’t – there’s enough storage that you don’t really need to worry about them.
We noted earlier that the Redmi Note 7 currently lacks the Dark Mode and Ambient Display found on the Mi 9 family. The software is pretty much the same in other respects, and there are some great extras only found on Xiaomi phones such as Dual Apps and Second Space.
A Split-screen mode is also found in the recents menu, with is accessible either from the onscreen button or by swiping from the bottom of the screen and then pausing before lifting your finger in the gesture-only Full Display mode.
While the notification LED is so pathetic that you’re likely to miss it completely, you do get individual app control over which are allowed to display notifications on the lock screen or float at the top of the screen, which means only the most important will be allowed to distract you. Finding your way around the settings may not be immediately obvious, however.
Redmi Note 7 ConclusionRedmi Note 7 is a very decent mid-range phone with a budget price. In the UK budget smartphone market none of its similarly priced rivals (think Mi A2 Lite, Honor 10 Lite, Moto G7 Power) even come close.
In design it’s not all that far removed from Xiaomi’s flagship, with a similarly large and almost as bright display, but it’s not of quite the same quality. In performance most users would not be able to separate Redmi Note 7 and Mi 9 SE, and it’s as capable as many phones costing £350.
Compared to the flagship line it adds microSD support and a headphone jack, but loses the wireless charging, in-display fingerprint sensor and NFC for mobile payments. The triple-lens camera is here reduced to a dual-lens model, but still has a huge 48Mp lens headlining.
On paper the capacious 4,000mAh battery looks amazing; in reality you should get a full day’s use from it.

In terms of overall appearance, body build and form, the UMiDIGI One Pro is your typical Huawei/Honor device – packed with pure Android and lower end specs. Actually, it’s a decent low to mid range model, that excels in design and it’s just average in terms of performance in everyday use. It weighs approximately 190 gr. (despite the fact that it hosts a typical 3250 mAh battery) and its size is 148 x 71,4 x 8,3 mm. This means that it’s really thin, relatively lightweight and very easy to use with one hand – if anyone’s interested.
The UMiDIGI One Pro has its main dual camera on the rear but it saves a special place for its fingerprint sensor, just inside the On/Off button that sits at the right side of the device!
Yes, it has borrowed the sensor placement that Sony first established in most of their smartphones, and in my eyes, that’s a good decision. The device’s frontal is almost empty apart from the notorious notch that sits at the top of the display. Apart from this, there’s just the screen, a selfie camera (with low-end FaceID-like features) and the earpiece of course.

UMiDIGI One ProBuild Quality
The screen is a 5.86-inches IPS panel, with a resolution of 1520 x 720 pixels. The display comes with 2.5D curved glass with a typical pixel density, equipped with Corning’s Gorilla Glass system for screen protection.
The impressive “Twilight” colour of this phone really sold me. I pride myself on being immune to colour choice, but man has this purple-blue-green-ish really sold me. Let’s ignore the eye catching color for a moment, the build quality here is good but… not excellent.
Surely it has improved from the days of the notorious UMI Super, but still it feels plastic some times – and this isn’t at all bad, for a phone at this price range. In any case, the phone is fairly easy to hold, but not as easy as a five-incher, the thinness does make it feel very small though.
The body is made out of plastic and metal, along with a special cover at the back that resembles glass (but it’s not). Its build quality is good as I said before but as with every phone that uses a glossy finish it gets easily smudged and you may end up polishing it every couple of minutes with a small cloth :p
UMiDIGI One ProDisplay
This display does have a slightly blue/purple tint that is almost unnoticeable in real life but does show quite noticeably on camera. Max brightness tops out around 400 nits which is quite respectable for such a panel, and is also relatively viewable under direct sunlight. Touch sensitivity is excellent and the 19:9 aspect ratio allows for excellent one hand use, typical of that of a 5.2 inch smartphone!
UMiDIGI One ProBattery
The combination of the built-in 3250mAh battery, IPS display, and the Helio P23 (MTK6763) SoC should provide average battery life. And while that holds mostly true, I believe its battery life could definitely be better. I managed to get approximately 5 hours of screen on time with ease, ending the day with 18% left. This comes after about 2 hours of YouTube, about an hour of gaming, 1,5 hours of local video playback, and about 3 hours of Bluetooth music in addition to all the miscellaneous items I performed such as Whatsapp, texting, FaceBook etc.
The one area where UMiDiGi has to improve on is the standby battery drain. I was getting a guaranteed 1% battery drain every hour, with it jumping up to 1.5% sometimes. This has to be solved if possible through software. UMIDIGI says that the One Pro supports wireless charging and – it does, but with certain hickups: it has to be placed firmly on the OEM wireless charging pad and the charging rate is not that fast. However for a price of 169$ one could forget about these, plug a USB Type-C cable and get on with his life 😉
UMiDIGI One ProSoftware
We have Android 8.1 Oreo running inside the phone, and I must say that UMiDiGi’s software optimization has taken a step up again over the older models, with this phone feeling even smoother when moving between home screens, going into settings etc.
Launching lots of apps at the same time, on the other hand, is a more ponderous process with the Helio P23 chipset struggling (a bit) to keep up with our needs, with 4GB of RAM being all this phone needs. Not an overkill (like having 6GB), but also not 3GB (which is not enough anymore).
The Helio P23 doesn’t affect gaming, it’s able to play all the games at 720p without issue, Modern combat, Asphalt, lighter games such as Super Mario Run ran without a hitch, even when I was recording the screen at the same time. The phone gets warm on its back side but never gets burning hot.
I also ran a malware scan and didn’t find anything. The fingerprint sensor is NOT that accurate, so you will have to train it 2-3 times more in order for it to get to “know” you. Let’s say we had an average of 80% success in identifying my thumb – which could be better I guess.
UMiDIGI One ProConnectivity
Reception on this phone is great. The device comes with full 4G support (LFDD-LTE: B1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 7 / 8 / 12 / 13 / 17 / 18 / 19 / 20 / 25 / 26 / 28A / 28B, TDD-LTE: B34 / 38 / 39 / 40 / 41), it offers very good connectivity inside large cities, with no dropped calls or problems during communication.
WiFi speeds are great, an 800MB file takes 4 minutes (on fast WiFi that is), and Bluetooth range is good also. I used the GPS to navigate to work, and it was fairly accurate and fast. No problems with Google Maps, or Sygic navigation 🙂 Well done UMIDIGI on this.
UMiDIGI One ProCamera
The camera is a welcomed surprise when using it in day mode! It’s photos offer good detail levels and it can be relatively easy to shoot good photos – as you keep your phone relatively still! Don’t worry the phone snaps photos pretty quickly so you don’t have to be a statue forever.
Colour reproduction ranges from good to great, with colour sometimes being rather average and showing great saturation and vividness other times. HDR mode, on the other hand, should be left disabled at all times, well almost all times. The HDR mode is way too aggressive, trying to equalize “bright” and “dark” spots when they aren’t that far apart in the first place. You have to leave it off unless there are extremely obvious bright and dark spots, e.g. taking a picture of the sun. In those cases, the aggressive HDR does its job well.
Moving on to Bokeh mode, which I see more and more as a gimmick, it adds Bokeh in a very unnatural circle, and not only that the overall quality of the photo is lowered as well. There is also a pro photo mode that works quite well and uses very convenient sliders to change the camera settings. The front facing camera is rather typical also.
Overall, these items make for an average video experience, and is really a downside to this phone.
UMiDIGI One ProVerdict
Hands down, this is a very beautiful – and affordable mid-ranger in the market. UMIDIGI shows signs of improvement with every device they launch: first they try to change their support, then they copy the good features of high end phones and combine them with a pure Android 8.1 Oreo UI that surely delivers.
Nope I am not certain that you will get a lot of OTA updates with this device. I got TWO wireless OTA updates during the 10 days I had it in my hands, but they brought bug fixes and small performance improvements. I really hope this phone gets Android 9.0 Pie – UMIDIGI has to surprise us and make a turn towards decent after sales support. This will surely help them improve their sales even more.
This UMiDIGI One Pro at $169,99 is surely one of the phones one should pay attention to, especially if the design of a phone is high on your “plus” list. It offers typical battery life with a 3250 mAh battery, very good built quality, decent display (nothing much) and a solid chipset with 4GB of RAM for decent everyday use.
