Want to keep in touch with your family and friends but at the same time you want to save up on the expenses which are entailed by countless SMSes and texting. Luckily for those using the new Windows 8, Windows 10 platform, there is a useful solution – the well-know WhatsApp. Unfortunately, at the moment when this article is written, there is no official Windows 8, Windows 10 or RT app for WhatsApp, so we’ll have to resorts to WhatsApp for desktop on Windows 8.

The app is available for Windows 8, Windows 10 Phone smartphones but not for Windows 8, Windows 10 desktops. WhatsApp will draw on your Internet connection in order to enable you to use your email and surf the web. You also can exchange messages for free with the friends that have installed the same app on their devices. Once you install your app on your phone, you will be able to directly see via your phonebook which friends use WhatsApp.

Unlike other messaging apps, WhatsApp will allow the creation of particular friend groups and the sending of unlimited texts which include images, video, and audio notes.

WhatsApp on Windows 8, Windows 10: how to run it

And the app is offering some neat features if you use it on a Windows 8, Windows 10 Phone. For example, it will allow you to directly dial a recipient number just by accessing their contact info. You also get a whole host of smiley faces to spice up your conversations with loved ones, save your chat history and view large images.

On the other hand if you want to use the app on a Windows 8, Windows 10 computer, you can do that but you will need an emulator like application like Bluestacks, to help you run the app. When you have installed the application on your Windows 8, Windows 10 computer, input your phone number and wait for the verification code to be sent back to you via SMS.

When you get it, input it in the application and you’re pretty much done. Now you can enjoy the same benefits of WhatsApp on your desktop. The app comes for free in the first 12 months of use and then is upgraded to a price of $0.99.

If you want to manage your conversations online, the most recent version of the Opera browser, trusted by millions of users worldwide, supports WhatsApp messenger. You can find the app as a sidebar panel option in the browser (shortcut Ctrl-Shift-M on Windows) and chat whenever you want via voice or text messages.

Alternatively, Opera lets you pin the chat window next to the current tab, enabling you to share images through a simple drag and drop move and never miss a message when you’re online. You can sign out of WhatsApp directly from the browser.

Since this article was published, WhatsApp app (funny word game, isn’t it?) has been released. The app allows you to connect to your Whatsapp account via your browser. However, there is an annoying thing that you need to know: to keep all your WhatsApp data in your browser, you also need to keep your phone connected to the internet with your mobile version of the app open.

There also were some issues reported by users. The app can give you some hard time especially if you are a perfectionist and have the habit to close the apps that you don’t use for the moment: you have to allow the app to run in the background.

However, if you do not intend to use it for something more ‘extravagant’ than chatting from your PC – this is the app you need!

Safari For Windows 10: How To Get And Install It

If you use a Mac or an iPhone, it’s hard to pick a different browser over Safari. It’s incredibly fast, uses minimal resources, and respects user privacy. But if you also use a PC, you won’t have the luxury of installing Apple’s flagship browser on Windows since the Cupertino-based tech giant does not develop Safari for the Windows PC. That’s a major issue when your gear consists of cross-platform products.

Table of Contents

Download and Install Safari on Your Windows PC

Regardless, the steps below will walk you through downloading and installing Safari on your Windows 10/11 PC. But unless you just want to have a feel of how Safari looked almost a decade earlier, we recommend you stay away from it.

1. Download the Safari installer from a software download portal such as Uptodown, Filehippo, or TechSpot. It weighs in at 36.7MB. Unfortunately, Apple no longer supports Safari for Windows, so you can’t get it from an official source.

3. Select Next on the Safari Setup’s Welcome screen.

4. Accept the license agreement and select Next.

5. Specify if you want to add Safari as a desktop shortcut or not. Also, decide if you prefer it as the default browser on your computer (we recommend you don’t select this option). Select Next to continue.

6. Pick an install directory (or leave the default folder path) and select Install.

7. Wait for the Safari installer to finish installing Safari on your computer. Then, select Finish.

Despite being almost ten years old, Safari for Windows doesn’t look too out of place. To the top, you have the familiar URL bar (you can’t use it to perform searches, however), a Bookmarks strip underneath, and a dedicated Search bar on the left corner. By default, new tabs display frequently visiting sites in thumbnail format—you can use the Top Sites and History tabs to switch them and your browsing history.

Selecting the cog-shaped icon at the right corner of the screen reveals the Safari menu, where you can choose to customize the toolbar, access your browsing history, launch a private browsing window, and so on.

Selecting Preferences opens the Preferences pane, which provides options to modify the homepage, pick a default search engine, adjust privacy settings, manage extensions (although extensions support is non-existent), etc.

What the browser does not allow is to sign in with an Apple ID. That makes it impossible to sync your browsing data from an iPhone or Mac. Even if the functionality were present previously, Apple probably would’ve stopped you from signing in to it by now.

During our Safari tests on Windows, the browser started showing its age. Most websites took a long time to load, while web apps (such as YouTube and Google Maps) simply failed or prompted us to switch to a compatible browser. Other than for basic web browsing, it was practically useless.

Safari for Windows also hasn’t received security updates in almost a decade, so we recommend that you don’t attempt to use it for any sensitive activities such as banking or shopping.

Sync Safari Browsing Data via iCloud for Windows

With iCloud for Windows up and running, open the iCloud app and check the boxes next to Passwords and Bookmarks. You can also activate additional iCloud services such as Photos and Drive if you want.

Follow that by installing the iCloud Passwords on Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. The former lets you insert and save passwords to the iCloud Keychain. You can also use the iCloud Passwords app (which installs automatically alongside iCloud for Windows) to manage your passwords in Windows. On the other hand, the iCloud Bookmarks extension syncs passwords between Chrome/Firefox and Safari.

Run Safari via a macOS Virtual Machine

If you want to use the most recent version of Safari on your PC (perhaps to test a feature or extension), the only way you can do that is by running macOS via virtualization software. However, the procedure is not convenient. For starters, Mac’s operating system is not natively supported by most VM software, so installation generally relies on workarounds relying on additional software. Also, it requires lots of free disk space and uses up system resources, not to mention that virtual machine guests generally run sluggishly compared to the host operating system.

If you still want to go ahead and install macOS, the easiest way to do that is by following the instructions within this macOS Virtualbox project on GitHub. It lets you install macOS Catalina as a virtual machine via a Bash script. We’ve condensed it into the following steps:

1. Download and install Oracle VM VirtualBox on your PC (it’s free).

2. Download and install Cygwin with the following dependencies (you can select them during installation).

bash

coreutils

gzip

unzip

wget

xxd

dmg2img

3. Download the chúng tôi bash script from GitHub.

4. Open the Cygwin Terminal. Then, drag and drop the bash script and press Enter.

5. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up macOS as a virtual machine on your PC.

iCloud for Windows Is the Most Convenient

Although it’s possible to download and install Safari on your Windows 10/11 computer, we recommend you stray away from it. The security risks alone make it impractical, and it’s not like you can use it for any serious web browsing anyway due to compatibility issues.

Windows 8: Hate It Already? Why Waiting For Windows 9 Won’t Help

Conventional Windows wisdom seems to hold that every other version of Windows is terrible and needs to be fixed by whatever version comes after that. Does this mantra sound familiar?

That’s how it’s supposed to go, right?

Given the drastic changes in Windows 8, it’s no surprise that some users who hate it are already holding out hope for a better Windows 9.

“What Windows 8 is, is just a media O.S… that’s about it. On a tablet, that’s fine or a cell phone. Vista was bad, Windows 7 is good.. Microsoft will make Windows 9 better.” –Shinobi

“I’m another one who will NOT ‘upgrade’ to Windows 8 – maybe Windows 9 will be better, every alternate system seems to be a shambles, looks like 8 will continue the trend!” –jja7528

“I hope that all PC manufacturers will give buyers the option to customize their PC’s with the “OLD” Windows 7, at least until an improved Windows 9 comes out……” –SamDovels

I’m here to deliver the bad news: Windows 9 won’t provide salvation, at least not if you’re hoping for Microsoft to alter its current trajectory. Unless you’re willing to embrace the changes Microsoft is making in Windows 8, be prepared to stick with your current version of Windows for a long time.

Windows Needs Change

Although Windows 8 has a fair share of perks for the traditional desktop, the operating system’s featured attraction is its new touchscreen interface.

Yet, it has to be this way. PC sales are down, while iPad sales are surging. People are turning to the iPad when they just need to get online or play with some apps. Although PC purists insist that you can’t do real work on an iPad, the body of evidence to the contrary keeps increasing.

None of this means the PC is doomed, but, as a general-purpose, go-to computing solution, PCs face a serious threat from tablets, especially the iPad. Microsoft must respond with an OS that makes sense for tablets.

Understanding Microsoft’s Angle

You might argue that Microsoft should have left Windows alone while building a separate tablet OS on the side. But who would use the latter?

Windows PC users would have little incentive to switch, which leaves Microsoft to figure out how to lure prospective iPad buyers. That’s a tall order, and it certainly hasn’t worked out for Android tablets, which aren’t selling very well.

As Technologizer’s Harry McCracken pointed out a year ago, Microsoft’s transition to Windows 8 is as radical a change as the company’s move from DOS to Windows 3.0. Then, as now, Microsoft had to tread lightly, letting people fall back onto their old software and old ways of doing things.

But, over time, the old way got phased out. Today’s command prompt is but a distant relative of the DOS version, and most Windows users never go near it.

Microsoft is banking on the chance that, as it redefines Windows, it can guide users through their own transitions. If you’ve used a PC your entire computing life, changing OSes means throwing away all the keyboard shortcuts you’ve learned, as well as losing all your USB accessories, the file system, and the eponymous windows.

Looking Ahead

From here, the future of Windows could play out in a few ways:

One possibility would be for Microsoft to concede defeat. Instead of forcing users to adopt the new Windows interface, Microsoft could give users the option to boot directly into the desktop, launch programs through an old-school Start menu, and maybe even bring back the Start button.

This seems like the least likely option, given the steps Microsoft has taken to make its new interface unavoidable. I don’t think Microsoft will cave unless there’s a huge backlash.

This might be possible in the distant future, but right now Microsoft’s strategy hinges on exposing everyone to the new user interface, so I wouldn’t expect a split any time soon. Besides, businesses have taken a liking to the iPad, even as they continue to rely on desktop software.

The last possibility, and the one I think most likely, would be for Microsoft to continue to evolve Windows.

Even if Windows 8 bombs, Microsoft won’t give up. When Redmond wants in on an important market, it tends to keep throwing money and resources at it. We saw that with Bing, we saw it with Windows Phone, and we’re going to see it again with Windows 8.

Time will tell if Microsoft can be more successful with Windows 8 than those other efforts. Either way, it’s highly unlikely that Microsoft will abandon its current vision and let this new wave of computing pass the company by. Desktop purists may not like the new look of Windows, but it’s here to stay.

Windows 10 To Get Two

Microsoft is continuing its crusade to get CIOs interested in Windows 10, touting new security features that include two-factor authentication built directly into the OS.

Overall, Windows 10 will offer businesses enhanced security in areas like identity protection and access control, information protection and threat resistance, since security “has been central to many of the customer conversations I’ve had since we announced the availability of the [Windows 10] Technical Preview,” wrote Jim Alkove in the blog post, referring to the pre-release version of Windows 10 that is publicly available for testing.

In the area of identity and access control, Windows 10 will offer IT managers the necessary functions to protect user credentials and devices with two-factor authentication, without having to rely on third-party products, he wrote.

“We believe this solution brings identity protection to a new level as it takes multi-factor security which today is limited to solutions such as smartcards and builds it right into the operating system and device itself, eliminating the need for additional hardware security peripherals,” Alkove wrote.

More specifically, Windows 10 will let users enroll their devices as one of the two authentication factors, with the second being either a pin or a biometric input, such as the reading of a fingerprint.

“From a security standpoint, this means that an attacker would need to have a user’s physical device—in addition to the means to use the user’s credential—which would require access to the users PIN or biometric information,” he wrote.

The new user credentialing system will be supported by Microsoft’s Active Directory, Azure Active Directory, and consumer Microsoft Accounts “so enterprises and consumers using Microsoft online services will quickly be able to move away from passwords.”

“With Windows 10 we aim to eliminate this type of attack with an architectural solution that stores user access tokens within a secure container running on top of Hyper-V technology. This solution prevents the tokens from being extracted from devices even in cases where the Windows kernel itself has been compromised,” he wrote.

“Protection of corporate data in Windows 10 enables automatic encryption of corporate apps, data, email, website content and other sensitive information, as it arrives on the device from corporate network locations,” he wrote.

Windows 10’s new Start menu and windowed Metro apps.

The DLP technology will also work on Windows Phone, and documents will be covered by this protection as they’re accessed from different desktop and mobile devices.

IT managers will be able to establish policies that control which apps can access corporate data, and Windows 10 also extends VPN control options to protect this data in devices owned by employees.

Finally, in the area of threat and malware resistance, Windows 10 will have features to lock down devices and only allow users to run apps that have been signed using a Microsoft provided signing service.

“Access to the signing service will be controlled using a vetting process similar to how we control ISV publishing access to the Windows Store and the devices themselves will be locked down by the OEM,” he wrote. “The lockdown process OEMs will use is similar to what we do with Windows Phone devices.”

IT administrators will be able to determine which apps they consider trustworthy, such as those they sign themselves, those signed by ISVs, those available on the Windows Store, or all of them.

Microsoft is aiming to ship Windows 10 by mid-2024, and in the meantime it’s publicly testing in an open program which recently topped 1 million participants and has generated 200,000 feedback items.

After Windows 8 was thoroughly ignored by Microsoft’s enterprise customers, the company is bending over backwards in its attempts to make CIOs and other enterprise IT executives pay attention to Windows 10.

As the OS goes through its pre-release public testing, it’ll become clearer whether the Windows 10 security improvements that Alkove is trumpeting today end up being compelling enough for business customers.

People tend to believe that premium antivirus solutions perform better than their free counterparts. Whether that’s true or not, we’re not going to discuss it here.

But if you’re among those who believe that they’ll be safer if they purchase an antivirus, BitDefender is definitely the best value for money.

Don’t get us wrong on this one, an affordable price is not the only thing BitDefender has to offer. This software indeed is one of the best on the market, regardless of its price.

It’s way above the industry average in almost every important category, according to AV-Test. BitDefender performs equally well with both Internet security and keeping your system safe as a whole.

It will prevent you from visiting all shady websites, and block, with high precision and efficiency rate, every suspicious application on your computer before you execute it.

The latest updates have also made BitDefender a strong tool against ransomware attacks, in accordance with recent events. But its defense mechanism against ransomware is also its only real downside.

Namely, you may encounter some false positives along the way, as BitDefender tends to sometimes register legit files or programs as a threat. But that can be resolved with whitelisting.

Check out its top features below:

Perfectly adjusted for Windows 10 PCs

Multi-layered protection to fight against the newest online threats

Efficient anti-phishing protection

Easy to install and use

Safe online banking protection

If BitDefender is the best value for the money, and Norton is a more expensive option, Kaspersky Antivirus comes right in the middle.

And it’s another elite, worldwide known antivirus solution that’s been right at the top for years.

As you’ve probably noticed by now, this article is mainly based on AV-Test results, and Kaspersky absolutely edged them.

This antivirus achieved perfect scores in all three important categories of the test – Performance, Protection, and Usability.

It surely deserves these scores, if nothing else but for usability, where both Norton and BitDefender fell short.

We’ll give Kaspersky the title of the most usable antivirus on this list. But when it comes to actual protection (on contrary to its AV scores), it gives slightly less accurate results than BitDefender or Norton.

But in Kaspersky’s defense, these are various tests where hundreds of malware samples were put to work. In reality, Kaspersky is as accurate as you need it to be.

Also, you’re very unlikely to encounter a false positive using Kaspersky, which is truly positive (I know where the door is).

Take a closer look at some of its best features:

Very simple to use and manage

Protects against viruses, spyware, phishing, and dangerous websites

High performance with low resource consumption

Parental control features

Password storage

Kaspersky

When it comes to an antivirus that does a great job even when you’re offline rely on Kaspersky.

Norton Securit Standard is the total opposite of Bitdefender. But only when it comes to pricing. This product is more expensive than the industry average, but we can say it’s worth the money.

It’s one of the most complete antivirus packages you can get right now and will provide you with a bunch of features, and respectable precision.

But enough about pricing, let’s see what you actually get for the money. According to the trustworthy AV-Test, Norton’s scores are among the highest in the industry.

Of course, you get great security against malware and virus attacks. But if you’ve ever heard of Norton, you already know that.

There are two defense stages that Norton implies to malicious software. First, it will automatically detect malware and instantly delete it.

But if the threat somehow manages to slip through, Norton will immediately block it on launch. All that with very high accuracy.

The best thing about Norton Security actually lies in the details. For example, as soon as you download and install it, you’ll get the latest virus definitions, and it also features great security features for browsing.

So, you can freely browse the Internet, open emails, and download everything you want. Norton will let you know if you’re at risk.

The biggest downside of Norton Security, besides its relatively high price, is that it doesn’t have legitimate support services. So, if you have any problems, you’ll have to look for the solution yourself on online forums.

Also, the initial system scan upon installation may take more time than it should. However, Norton has a feature that allows it to memorize good files, in order to speed up future scans, so we can’t say this is a real issue.

Take a look at a few of its top features below:

Cloud backup for PC

SafeCam feature that secures your webcam against high jacking

Built-in firewall for PC and Mac

Password management

Anti-spyware, antivirus, malware, and ransomware protection

Norton Security

Ensure the protection of your 64-bit device and your webcam with this amazing software.

Avast Free Antivirus is perhaps the most affordable option on this list, simply because you can get it for free! The free version offers so much, that you’re basically paying just for bonus features in the Pro version.

Avast Free Antivirus offers a respectable level of protection for a free antivirus. It even has better scores than some paid solutions.

Actually, these results are not better than any antivirus from this list, but the other abovementioned antiviruses are elite premium security solutions, so we can say that Avast hangs in there quite well.

As for the bonus features, there’s the Wi-Fi Inspector feature which, obviously, scans nearby networks for any security problems.

There’s also a simple password manager that should help you organize your passwords, and keep them secure.

Additionally, the Pro option brings the Online Security browser extension, which should keep you safe while browsing. We’ll leave it to you to judge whether the Pro version is worth the money or not.

Let’s see what are its key features:

100% free antivirus

Great network security inspector

Password manager for securing all your accounts

Very easy to use and maintain

Passive mode to be used as a secondary security solution

Avast Free Antivirus

Don’t miss putting in this great antivirus software that works wonders on your Windows 64-bit PC.

Let’s get this one straight first. Windows Defender is by no means in the conversation for the best antivirus for Windows. So, why would we even put it on the same list with all these beasts from up there?

Windows Defender is an integral part of the conversation that has been on for ages – whether you need an antivirus on your PC or not.

We’re not going to discuss it here, but for people who believe that antivirus is actually unnecessary, Windows Defender is an obvious (and only) choice.

The level of protection you get with Windows Defender is rather basic, but it’s still enough to keep you relatively safe.

Even though Microsoft knows a lot of people use Windows Defender instead of third-party antiviruses, the company actually doesn’t sit on its hands when it comes to developing Windows Defender.

In fact, each major update for Windows 10 makes this feature better. There’s even a rumor that suggests Microsoft will implement some artificial intelligence into Windows Defender.

What is 64-bit?

64-bit means that something is 64-bits wide, regardless of Windows, apps, processors, or simply memory addresses or other units of data. They are all 64 bits wide and are used for computational power.

For computers, I run 64-bit Windows because it works better with current processors, which are also 64-bit. Windows and processor manufacturers only make 64-bit products because they are the most affordable today.

So, this is our comprehensive guide to the best antivirus for Windows 10 64-bit platforms. We hope our recommendations will help you benefit from some excellent Internet security.
