Suggested January 2024 Microsoft Mitigates Hacker Access To Government Email Accounts

Microsoft announced that it recently blocked a group of hackers, which it labeled Storm-0558, that accessed email accounts belonging to around 25 organizations, including government agencies.

How Hackers Gained Access To Email Accounts

In a blog post, Microsoft said it began investigating abnormal activity in some email accounts on June 16 after being notified by customers.

What Is Storm-0558?

According to Microsoft’s actor profile of Storm-0558, the description of the group is as follows:

Storm-0558 (DEV-0558) is a nation-state activity group based out of China. They focus on espionage, data theft, and credential access. They are also known to use custom malware that Microsoft tracks as Cigril and Bling, for credential access.

How The Issue Was Resolved

Microsoft claims it has fully resolved the issue and blocked the hackers’ access. It is working with impacted customers and has notified them ahead of its public disclosure.

The company said it had found no evidence the hackers remained in any corporate systems.

Mitigating Future Cyberattacks

This latest activity comes as cyberattacks continue to increase against organizations worldwide.

United States Senator Mark R. Warner, Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, expressed concern over reports of the latest cyberattack and what would be needed to prevent future incidents.

“The Senate Intelligence Committee is closely monitoring what appears to be a significant cybersecurity breach by Chinese intelligence. It’s clear that the PRC is steadily improving its cyber collection capabilities directed against the U.S. and our allies. Close coordination between the U.S. government and the private sector will be critical to countering this threat.”

Microsoft plans to keep improving security around account keys and tokens to stay ahead of evolving cyber risks.

It emphasized the need for continued collaboration and transparency to strengthen defenses across the tech industry against sophisticated hacking campaigns.

How To Safely Switch Your Email Accounts Without Losing Data

Switching an old email account may look like a daunting task as you might worry about losing previous email messages, contacts, and other data in the process.

If you have two email accounts from the same email service, you can just add the other account to the same profile and switch whenever you want. However, if you want to switch across different platforms; say Gmail and Outlook, it takes a little longer before you can migrate to the new account.

To safely switch email accounts, you basically do two things; import data from the old account and then set up a forwarding mechanism to receive all the upcoming email messages in the new account.

To move emails and contacts from your old Gmail account to the new one, you must first enable POP access on the old one. Then, you can start importing all emails and contacts into the new account. Finally, you can set up automatic forwarding to receive every mail from the old account to the new one.

First, sign in to your old Gmail account.

Note: Alternatively, you can also set up IMAP and use it to switch to another Outlook account. On the same Forwarding section, you can find the necessary configuration instructions next to the IMAP access field.

Log in to your new Gmail account and open its settings, like in the above steps.

Log in to the old account when prompted and allow the necessary permissions.

Note: The import process can take some time depending on the number of emails and contacts you have on the old account.

If you don’t want to delete the old email account, but still keep receiving every new mail from it on the new account, you can set up mail forwarding.

Login to the old Gmail account from whose emails you want to forward.

Go to the Gmail settings.

Note: You can even create a filter that forwards a particular type of email you receive on the old account.

Once you have configured all the necessary settings to use the new Gmail account, consider updating all the accounts which are previously linked to the old email address.

On the other hand, notify other people about your new email address so that they send emails to your new account. Since it isn’t convenient to notify each person manually, you can set up an auto-reply in Gmail. By doing so, they can reach out to you on your new Gmail account.

Log in to your old Gmail account.

Go to the Gmail settings.

Write a message to automatically reply and notify the senders about your new email address. Configure other options according to your preferences.

Switching from Outlook to Gmail is even easier. You can just add the Gmail account in the Outlook desktop app. This way, you don’t need to log in to Gmail and can access all your Gmail messages from within the Outlook app.

To add Gmail account, you can just follow Step 2. But, if you are switching from one Outlook email to another, you need to go through all the steps below.

Launch the Outlook desktop app.

Then, select the Advanced tab.

Once you have exported the PST file, you now need to import it to the new Outlook account to access all the old Outlook data such as messages, drafts, and more. You can also use the PST to migrate Outlook to a new PC.

Launch the Outlook app.

Select the File menu at the top.

Enter the password you set up for the data file.

Now, that you have access to the old emails and other data, set up a forward mechanism to receive all future emails on the old account.

Open the Outlook app.

Similar to Gmail’s vacation feature, you can send automatic replies to notify people who send messages to the old email address.

Additionally, adjust the date and time range you want to send the replies.

How To Access Microsoft Exchange In Linux

Linux is a wonderfully diverse system that has a lot of potential benefits over Windows such as security, speed and specialist software. However, there are times that a user will rely on Microsoft products for their workflow, and these tools aren’t always compatible with Linux. One such problem is using Microsoft Exchange.

Exchange provides the continual connection to an email inbox running on Windows Server, or now Office 365, in the cloud. The mailbox will be mirrored on the server, just as it would with an IMAP protocol. The difference is that IMAP will poll the server at a set time and this immediacy makes Exchange a good choice for businesses and priority users.

What About Linux?

Not everyone who uses Microsoft services wants to use Microsoft Windows. Linux users have some strict choices when it comes to accessing Exchange.

Web Apps

The most common and easiest way to access Exchange is via your web browser. Although this is platform agnostic, it is a method that Linux users can utilize in a pinch. Simply go to the website, and enter your credentials just as you would for any email client or webmail service.

Hiri

Hiri is software that seamlessly connects to Exchange. It has its own rich client for Windows, Mac and Linux and gives you full control over your email. Hiri also allows contact and calendar syncing, so this can be a good choice for businesses where scheduled meetings and events are required.

A potential downside to Hiri is that it is a paid service. Although they offer a full seven-day trial, users are looking at a $39 annual charge or $119 for a lifetime subscription in order to continue with their connections. This may seem low when considering the benefits, but for small businesses with around ten employees, those costs can mount up. Hiri is also closed source, which for open source purists can pose an ethical problem.

ExQuilla

ExQuilla is a plugin that is available for Mozilla’s Thunderbird platform. It provides access to message reading and contacts in Thunderbird for users of Microsoft Exchange Server version 2007 and later. It can be downloaded directly from the website, or you can install it from inside the Thunderbird client.

Previously, the plugin was a paid service and required a license. However, since March 2023, and with version 60 and above of Thunderbird, the service is trial-based. As quoted on the site, “ExQuilla is not free software but is licensed on an annual basis. New users are granted a free 60-day trial license automatically.”

More information can be found on the project GitHub page and will provide useful tips and assistance should users run into any problems with installation.

Evolution

Another option is to use Evolution which is commonly found in the repositories of most Linux systems and within GNOME. I will use Ubuntu as a guide to installing this, but your package manager should be able to install it.

Open a Terminal and type in the following:

Enter your details as follows:

These details may differ depending on how the server or service is set up. Check with your administrator as applicable.

1] Extensions on edge:// URLs

Enables running extensions on edge:// URLs, where extensions explicitly request this permission. It works on both, Mac and Windows platforms.

2] Tab Hover Cards

Enables a popup containing tab information to be visible when hovering over a tab. This will replace tooltips for tabs. – Mac, Windows. Read how to enable/disable Tab Hover cards in Edge.

3] Override software rendering list

Overrides the built-in software rendering list and enables GPU acceleration on unsupported system configurations.

4] Accelerated 2D canvas

Enables the use of the GPU to perform 2D canvas rendering instead of using software rendering. It is used for drawing shapes, text, images, and other objects

5] Partial swap

Sets partial swap behavior.

6] WebRTC new encode CPU load estimator

Enables a new estimator for the encoder CPU load, for evaluation and testing. Intended to improve accuracy when screencasting.

7] Smooth Scrolling

It enables web pages to scroll smoothly from top to bottom even when the system is struggling. So, animate smoothly when scrolling page content!

8] Latest stable JavaScript features

Some web pages use legacy or non-standard JavaScript extensions that may conflict with the latest JavaScript features. This flag allows disabling support of those features for compatibility with such pages.

9] Experimental WebAssembly

It enables web pages to use experimental WebAssembly features. The emerging standard is viewed as a virtual CPU for the Web.

10] Experimental Web Platform features

As the name suggests, the feature enables experimental Web Platform features that are in development.

Enables Developer Tools experiments. You can use ‘Settings‘ panel in ‘Developer Tools‘ to toggle individual experiments.

12] Focus Mode

It lets you isolate a tab in a separate window just like PWAs (Progressive Web App). So, when enabled, the user can switch to Focus Mode.

13] Hardware-accelerated video encode

Hardware-accelerated video encode is used to accelerate the encoding performance while exporting the timeline in H. 264/AVC and HEVC codecs.

14] Touch initiated drag and drop

Touch drag and drop can be initiated through a long press on a draggable element.

15] Enable native notifications

Enables support for using the native notification toasts and notification center on platforms where these are available.

16] Threaded scrolling

Disabling Threaded scrolling will force all scroll events to be handled on the main thread. This dramatically hurts the scrolling performance of most websites and is intended for testing purposes only.

17] Extension Content Verification

This flag can be used to turn on verification that the contents of the files on disk for extensions from the web store match what they’re expected to be. This can be used to turn on this feature if it would not otherwise have been turned on, but cannot be used to turn it off (because this setting can be tampered with by malware).

18] Disable site isolation

Disables site isolation (SitePerProcess, IsolateOrigins, etc). It is intended for diagnosing bugs that may be due to out-of-process iframes. Opt-out has no effect if site isolation is force-enabled using a command-line switch or using an enterprise policy.

19] OpenVR hardware support

If enabled, Microsoft Edge will use OpenVR devices for VR (supported only on Windows 10 or later).

20] Force Dark Mode for Web Contents

When enabled, the mode automatically renders all web contents using a dark theme. It works just like the Dark Reader extension on the Desktop.

21] Experimental Web Payments API features

Web Payments is an emerging web standard being developed by the W3C.  The standard aims to simplify online payments and enable a broader set of players to participate easily in the payments ecosystem on the web. You can Enable experimental Web Payments API features via this flag in Edge Chromium – #enable-web-payments-experimental-features

22] Credit card autofill ablation experiment.

If enabled, it will stop Edge from displaying credit card autofill suggestions.

23] Omnibox UI Show Suggestion Favicons

It shows favicons instead of generic vector icons for URL suggestions in the Omnibox dropdown.

24] Enable lazy image loading

Defers the loading of images marked with the attribute ‘loading=lazy’ until the page is scrolled down near them.

25] Enable Tab Discarding

This helps to abandon the contents of unused tabs when memory is low. As such, you can use this flag to help conserve some RAM.

26] Global Media Controls

Enables the Global Media Controls UI in the toolbar.

There’s more to the list. You can access all of them by simply opening the about:flags page in Edge Chromium.

If you ever feel the need to, then this post will show you how to disable about:flags page in Edge.
