Null Hypothesis (H0) assumes that the two possibilities are the same, i.e., the observed difference is due to chance alone. In a statistical test null hypothesis (H0) is compared with the alternate hypothesis (H1), and on this basis, we reject or accept the null hypothesis. Both the null and alternative hypotheses are conjectures on the statistical models of the population being studied. The statistical model, in turn, is made based on the sample of the population. These tests are used everywhere in science, from particle physics to drug development. They separate actual results from the noise; with them, it would be easier to do science properly.

Procedure

In a statistical significance test, the statement being tested, the null hypothesis, is tested against the alternative hypothesis. The test is designed to assess the strength of the evidence against the null hypothesis. Usually, the null hypothesis assumes no difference. For example, if we compare the heights of women from different regions, say India and Netherlands, the null hypothesis assumes that the average height of women is the same in both regions. The probability that we will get the same result as the sample if the null hypothesis is true is called the p-value. Finding the p-value is crucial in testing the null hypothesis. If the p-value is low, the result is unlikely if the null hypothesis is true and vice versa.

Even when we fail to exclude the null hypothesis, it does not mean it is true, and it might be that the measurement was faulty or the sample was biased. On the other hand, the supposed ‘objective’ evidential nature of p values was questioned early on. Fisher’s attempt at refutation of H0 based on ‘inductive inference’ is generally considered logically flawed, particularly because p values only test one hypothesis and are based on tail area probabilities, which was considered a serious deficiency early on.

Limitations

Statistical Significance does not mean practical significance. A result might be statistically significant but be of no use. For example, a new expensive medicine that works better than a placebo but other cheaper therapies that offer similar benefits might already exist. So this result is statistically significant but is of no practical significance. We also cannot prove the null hypothesis suggested by the data, as this is circular reasoning and cannot prove anything.

Otherwise, the researcher will be unable to rule out the null hypothesis. In most research, it is the null hypothesis that the researcher wants to reject.

Alternative Hypothesis

The alternative hypothesis, also called the research hypothesis, symbolized as H1, is the mortal enemy of the null hypothesis. In essence, the alternative hypothesis is the opposite of the null hypothesis. Let us consider an example: I can assume attention, and I test it in two conditions, for example, attention in the absence of noise and attention in the presence of noise

For the null hypothesis, I will say that there will be no difference between the two, and for the alternative hypothesis, I will say there will be a difference between the two. The null hypothesis is the one I want to reject, but I will assume for it to be true until proven otherwise. To test this idea, I will research and collect data, and based on that data, and I will either reject the null hypothesis or retain it. Here, the alternative hypothesis is the one I want to retain. Calculating the likelihood that the observed effect (in this case, the difference in attention) will occur if the null hypothesis is correct is the traditional method for determining whether to support the alternative hypothesis. The alternative hypothesis will be accepted in place of the null hypothesis if the probability of this effect happening is sufficiently low. Otherwise, the null hypothesis will not be disproved. That is, I will study the null hypothesis and test the idea that there will be no difference between the two conditions. If my results show that the probability of this happening is extremely low, I will reject this hypothesis. After rejecting the null hypothesis, I am left with an alternative hypothesis, which I will accept. In this sense, the alternative hypothesis is the best explanation for why the null hypothesis was rejected.

History of Hypothesis Testing

While hypothesis testing became popular in the early twentieth century, it was first employed in the 1700s. The initial use is attributed to John Arbuthnot (1710), followed by Pierre-Simon Laplace (1770s) in assessing the human sex ratio at birth. Karl Pearson (p-value, Pearson’s chi-squared test), William Sealy Gosset (Student’s t-distribution), and Ronald Fisher (“null hypothesis,” analysis of variance, “significance test”) largely contributed to modern significance testing. In contrast, hypothesis testing was developed by Jerzy Neyman and Egon Pearson (son of Karl). Ronald Fisher began his career in statistics as a Bayesian.
