Suggested January 2024 How To Install Fb17 Ice Cream Sandwich Firmware On Epic 4G Touch

The Samsung Epic 4G Touch is the latest Samsung phone to get an unofficial Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0 firmware leaked for it. Having gotten two leaked ICS firmware in quick succession, we’ve our fingers crossed and hope to see more and more leaks in the coming days. Till the official release arrives, Epic 4G Touch owners will have to be content with these unofficial builds since something is always better than nothing.

Do note that this firmware is a beta release and by no means complete, so bugs are to be expected, which will probably be ironed out in future firmware releases as time goes by.

Read on to find out how to flash this firmware on your Samsung Epic 4G Touch.

Warning!

The methods and procedures discussed here are considered risky and you should not attempt anything if you don’t know completely what it is. If any damage occurs to you or your device, we won’t be held liable — you only will be responsible, you’ve been warned!!!

Compatibility

This firmware and the guide below is compatible only and only with Epic 4G Touch, model number SPH-D710. It’s not compatible with any other device. Check your device’s model number in Settings » About phone.

Pre-Installation tips:

If you have Samsung’s PC software Kies installed, un-install it first because it may interrupt the flashing process.

How to Install FB17 on Epic 4G Touch [Step By Step Guide]:

Extract the file you downloaded in step 1 once. Use a software like 7-zip (free software) to do so. You’ll get a file named D710_CODE_SPH-D710.FB17_CL159611_REV02_user.tar after extracting.

Extract the contents of the Odin 1.85.zip file to a folder.

Disconnect your phone if it’s connected to PC.  Switch Off your phone. Wait for vibration to confirm complete switch off.

Now, put the phone in Download Mode — press and hold these keys together: Volume Down + Power. You’ll get a ‘Warning!‘ screen.. press Volume up to continue to enter download mode

Connect your phone to PC now. You should get the message “Added! !” under the Odin’s message box in the bottom left. If you don’t get this message, then probably there is a problem with drivers. Make sure you’ve proper drivers installed. See point 3 above under ‘pre-installation tips’.

Important! On Odin, make sure Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time checkboxes are selected. Do not touch any other check box or tab or anything, except as was required in step 9 above.

Double check everything said in step 9 and 10 above. Your ODIN screen should look similar to this after selecting the required files:

Now, hit the START button to start flashing the firmware. When the flashing procedure is finished, your phone will automatically reboot — and when you see the Samsung logo, you can safely unplug the cable. Plus, you’ll get a PASS (with green background) message in the left-most box at the very top of the Odin.

IMPORTANT Note: If ODIN gets stuck and doesn’t seem to be doing anything, or you get a FAIL message (with red background) in ODIN, do the following:

Disconnect the phone from the PC, close ODIN, remove battery, re-insert it, turn phone on in Download mode again, and do the procedure again from Step 7.

When it has restarted, your Epic 4G Touch will be running Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) with version being Android 4.0.3, build being FB17 and Samsung’s custom UI TouchWiz 4 atop it. Check out your Epic 4G’s Android version here: Settings » About Phone.

[Optional] Getting ODIN to Detect Phone after Flashing FB17

After you flash the FB17 firmware, Odin might not detect the phone when you connect it to the PC. If this happens, do the following:

Latest Ice Cream Sandwich Update For Galaxy S2 I9100 — Xwlpg

Another official Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0.3 update for the Samsung Galaxy S2 has hit the hair — firmware version XWLPG — for Nordic countries (Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom). It shows how Samsung is busy with keeping the Galaxy S2 as updated as possible (though I wish they would move to Android 4.0.4 as it has quite a few noticeable improvements over 4.0.3).

So if you want to update your Galaxy S2 to the latest official Android 4.0 firmware, you can manually flash it using the guide below. The update is for Nordic countries but it will work with every Galaxy S2 device out there.

Read on to find out how you can update to the XWLPG firmware on your Galaxy S2.

Compatibility

This firmware and the guide below are compatible only and only with Galaxy S2, model number I9100. It’s not compatible with the I9100G or any other device. Check your device’s model number in: Settings » About phone.

Warning!

The methods and procedures discussed here are considered risky and you should not attempt anything if you don’t know completely what it is. If any damage occurs to your device, we won’t be held liable.

How to Install XWLPG Firmware on Galaxy S2 i9100

Important! Don’t forget to at least make a backup of your APN settings, which you can restore later if your data connection does not work after installing the ROM. Use the backup guide to find out how.

Extract the downloaded zip file once to get the following files (you might see the file name end with .tar instead of .md5 as the file extension is usually hidden, so it’s normal):

I9100XWLPG_I9100XXLPX_I9100NEELP4_Home.tar.md5

SS_DL.dll [ignore this one]

Extract the contents of the Odin 1.85.zip file to a folder.

Disconnect your phone if it’s connected to PC, then switch it off.

Now, put the Galaxy S2 in Download Mode — press and hold these keys together: Volume Down + Home + Power. A Warning! screen will come up; press Volume Up key to continue to enter Download Mode.

Important! Do not make any other changes in Odin except selecting the required files as given in step 10. Leave all other options as they are.

If you don’t get this message, then probably there is a problem with drivers. Make sure you’ve proper drivers installed (check step 2). Also, uninstall Kies from the Control Panel as well (this will leave the drivers on the computer but remove Kies which can interfere with the procedure).

Now, hit the START button to start flashing the firmware. When the flashing is complete, your phone will automatically reboot — and when you see the Samsung logo, you can safely unplug the cable. Plus, you’ll get a PASS (with green background) message in the left-most box at the very top of the Odin. What to do if Odin gets stuck: If ODIN gets stuck and doesn’t seem to be doing anything, or you get a FAIL message (with red background) in ODIN, disconnect the phone from the PC, close ODIN, remove battery, re-insert it, turn phone on in Download mode again, and do the procedure again from Step 9.

After you’ve got the PASS message, it’s possible — and okay — that phone might get stuck at S logo, and not boot up completely. It’s okay, just follow the steps 14.1 to 14.3, and you will be fine. And, if it boots up fine, without getting stuck at S logo, you’re fine. The Android 4.0 installation has been done successfully. So, do the following only if your i9100 doesn’t move beyond the S logo when booting up after getting PASS in Odin (make sure you wait some good 10-15 mins to confirm that it’s stuck):

Boot to recovery mode — for which, remove and re-insert the battery, then press and hold Home + Volume Up + Power keys together. Once you are in recovery mode, use volume keys to move the selection up and down and power or home key to select the option.

Go to Wipe Data/Factory Reset and select it. Select Yes on next screen.

Now, select reboot system now to reboot your phone. It will now boot up fine and you can use the latest Android 4.0 firmware on your Galaxy S2.

If you run into any roadblocks while flashing the firmware, let us know and we’ll help you out.

[Root] If you want to get root access on the XWLPG firmware, follow this guide.

How To Install Flatpak On Ubuntu

For many years people have talked about “universal installers” for Linux. We have app image, snap packages, and now Flatpaks. Much like the other tools, Flatpak is a technology that makes it very easy to install software no matter the Linux distribution. This is a great tool because for too long the Linux platform has been plagued with the fact that there are too many types of installation formats.

The difference between snaps and why some would want to use Flatpak in its place is clear: the entire Gnome foundation is behind this technology, and soon it will be possible to get the entire Gnome desktop (and more) in Flatpak format. However, this isn’t the only benefit.

The real reason Flatpak stands out is because the developers of this software put the Linux desktop first. This can’t be said for snaps, as Canonical tends to focus more on servers. With this technology it is easy to see tons of software from many developers popping up in a very short time.

This guide will focus on the installation of Flatpak on Ubuntu. If you run a different Linux distribution, instructions on how to install the Flatpak technology are here.

Note: all Flatpak package installation instructions apply to all Linux-based operating systems including Ubuntu.

Installing Flatpak on Ubuntu

Flatpak is available for Ubuntu 16.10 by adding a PPA to the system. To add this PPA, open a terminal window and do the following:

sudo

add-apt-repository ppa:alexlarsson

/

flatpak

The PPA will add a new software source to Ubuntu. Next, update the software sources with the update command.

sudo

apt update

Finally, install the Flatpak technology to Ubuntu:

sudo

apt

install

flatpak How to list packages

For some reason there isn’t any ability within Flatpak to search across all repositories in a simple manner. Instead, if the user wants to find a specific package to install, they’ll only be able to list every package on an individual repository. To list all available installable packages in a Flatpak repository, do the following:

flatpak remote-ls name-of-repository

--app

This command will print out every single app available for installation. From here, pick an app from the list and run this command to install it:

flatpak

install

--user

nameofapp

Note: for more help with Flatpak commands, run flatpak --help.

4 great Flatpak to check out Gimp

The best way to look at Flatpak is that it’s a great way to deliver bleeding-edge software updates as soon as possible. This might not sound like much, but when talking about a Linux distribution that takes forever to release updates, this could be very useful.

Take Gimp for example: a great graphical editor for the Linux platform and one that with each version gets better features. The developers have decided to deliver their program nightly (updates every single night) via Flatpak.

To install Gimp as a Flatpak, follow these instructions:

flatpak

install

nightly-graphics org.gimp.GimpDevel master

Pitivi

flatpak remote-add

–from

=pitivi.flatpakrepo pitivi flatpak

install

pitivi org.pitivi.Pitivi master

Telegram

Telegram is a great message app and one of the few mainstream services to take Linux seriously as a platform. Downloading Telegram and getting it running on Linux is moderately easy but something not a lot of people want to do as it requires extracting packages.

Luckily, there’s a Flatpak for that. Fedora users has taken it upon themselves to serve up the official Telegram chat client in the form of a Flatpak. This means it’ll always have up-to-date binaries, and installing Telegram on new machines can be just a few commands away.

flatpak

install

telegram-desktop org.telegram.TelegramDesktopDevel

Libre Office

Libre Office, like Gimp, gets updated with new features quite often. A lot of the time most Linux distribution providers are pretty slow to push out these changes. That’s why The Document Foundation has taken it upon themselves to distribute their software via Flatpaks. This will ensure that everyone can get the latest version of the open-source office suite as soon as possible without hassle.

flatpak

install

–user

–bundle

LibreOffice.flatpak

Conclusion

With the Flatpak technology installed on the system, Ubuntu is now set up to install packages from all different types of sources. Though not a lot of developers are on the Flatpak train just yet, more and more projects are using it every day. To keep up with apps that are available with this new technology, head over to this page and check on it every so often, as new apps get added every day.

How To Install Unreal Engine On Mac

Unreal Engine is a free 3D computer graphics game engine developed by Epic Games. It has been used in a variety of games and has seen adoption by other industries, most notably the film and television industry. If you are playing games from Epic store, you might need the Unreal Engine on your system. This guide walks you through the process of installing Unreal Engine on your Mac.

Prerequisite

Before downloading and installing Unreal Engine, ensure that you have enough available storage on your Mac, as the application size is quite big. You should have at least 40GB free for the application. You’ll also need to install Xcode, as it is a necessity for running Unreal Engine.

Tip: learn how to find out how much storage you’ll need on your Mac.

Download Xcode

To run Unreal Engine, you’ll need to have Xcode downloaded on your Mac:

Open the App Store on your Mac and search for Xcode.

How to Install Unreal Engine

With Xcode downloaded, follow the instructions below to download Unreal Engine.

Head to the Epic Games website, and register for an account.

Download the Epic Games Launcher for your Mac.

Open the installer, and drag the Epic Games Launcher into your “Applications” folder when prompted.

While downloading Unreal Engine, you’ll have the option to install multiple versions. Whether you need to depends on your device and individual requirements. This may take a while.

Launch Unreal Engine.

Note: Now that you have Unreal Engine installed, it may take a while to get familiar with it and learn the software. It’s important to free up additional space to export your games or projects. For example, smaller games can use between 50GB and 100GB storage.

Unreal Engine and Apple Silicon

Unreal Engine version 5.2 supports Apple silicon computers, resulting in quicker and more efficient native performance. This is primarily due to the implementation of Universal Binary. Unreal Engine contains executable code for both Intel and Mac architectures. Without that, you would have been dependent on Apple’s Rosetta 2 Emulator to translate the code.

Additional plugins and downloadable object scans are readily available from the Epic Games launcher marketplace. This is also the place to download additional updates to the engine or return to a previous version of the software.

Good to know: curious whether the other apps on your Mac are optimized for Apple silicon? Visit our guide to learn more.

Frequently Asked Questions What other 3D software is available to Mac developers?

Some of the leading applications in this field include Blender, Maya, and Nuke, which are all widely used in motion picture industries. However, in recent years, there have been some new contenders on the scene – most notably Unity, which is said to be easier to use and better for games of a smaller scale.

What can I achieve with Unreal Engine?

Unreal Engine is designed for both creatives and 3D developers. It’s currently being utilized in the motion picture industry and the video game industry. Some of the leading visual artists working on Hollywood blockbusters and next-generation console video games use Unreal Engine to build their worlds. The software also offers a platform for creating 3D objects and selling them as downloadable files, which is becoming increasingly useful in the field of industrial engineering. This added feature makes it drastically easier for new developers to start building.

How often is Unreal Engine updated?

Unreal Engine is constantly updated. The latest version is Unreal Engine 5.02, which includes support for macOS Ventura. With Epic Games having such a dedicated team and loyal community, it’s no surprise that there are consistent changes made to the engine. You’ll be notified within Epic Games Launcher as soon as there is an update. You can also download multiple versions of the engine to your computer, for situations when you wish to return to a previous version.

How To Restore Galaxy Camera To Stock Firmware

The Galaxy Camera has been launched recently, and the Android development community has already been able to root it, and will no doubt be coming up with custom ROMs and other hacks for the device, extending its functionality and maybe camera capabilities further.

But in all the time one spends tinkering around on the device, there is often a necessity to restore back to stock firmware if something messes up the device, or if someone simply wants to go back to stock in order to claim warranty or get rid of any hacks they may have applied, which is why we’ve made a simple guide that will help you flash back to a stock firmware on your Galaxy Camera if the need arises.

There’s a firmware for every country and region, so just follow the guide below and you’ll have a fully restored and working Galaxy Camera in no time.

Compatibility

The procedure described below is only for the Samsung Galaxy Camera, model number EK-GC100. Do not try it on any other device, not even on another model of the same device.

Warning!

The methods and procedures discussed here are considered risky, so try them out at your own risk, and make sure to read each step carefully before attempting anything. We will not be held responsible if anything goes wrong.

How to Restore Galaxy Camera to Stock Firmware

Extract the file downloaded in step 3 on the computer to obtain a file with a .tar.md5 extension. The file name may also end at .tar, which is normal. This is the actual firmware file that we need to flash on the camera.

Extract the contents of the Odin3_v3.04.zip file to a folder on your computer.

Turn off the camera and wait for it to shut down completely.

Then, hold down the Volume Down + Camera + Power buttons together till the screen turns on to boot into download mode. If you get a Warning! screen instead, press theVolume Up button to boot into download mode.

Connect the camera to PC now. You should get the message “Added !!” under Odin’s message box in the bottom left.

If you don’t get this message, make sure you installed drivers correctly (using Kies or directly) as given in step 2. If it still doesn’t work, try changing to another USB port on the computer and also use the USB ports on the back if you have a desktop PC.

Important! Do not make any other changes in Odin except selecting the required files as given in step 11. Leave all other options as they are. Make sure Re-Partition check box is not selected.

What do if Odin gets stuck or doesn’t do anything: If ODIN gets stuck on setup connection or at any stage of this process after you’ve hit the Start button, and doesn’t seem to be doing anything, or if upon completion of the process you get a FAIL message (with red background) in ODIN, do this: disconnect the camera from the PC, close ODIN, remove battery for 4-5 seconds, re-insert it, turn camera on in Download mode again, and do the procedure again from Step 9.

[Important] What to do if the camera doesn’t boot: After you get the PASS message and the camera reboots, the camera might get stuck at the booting animation. If that happens, perform the following steps to make it boot. Remember that these steps will wipe your personal data like contacts, apps, messages, etc. If your canera has already booted, you can stop reading the guide here, your camera has been restored successfully:

Boot to recovery mode — for which, first power off camera (by removing battery and reinserting it), wait for 5-6 seconds, and then press and hold Volume Up + Camera + Power keys together till the screen turns on, then let them go to boot into recovery. Once you are in recovery mode, use volume keys to move the selection up and down and camera key to select the option.

Go to Wipe data/Factory Reset and select it. Select Yes on next screen.

Then, select reboot system now to reboot the camera, which will now boot properly.

If you run into any roadblocks while flashing the firmware, let us know and we’ll help you out.

Your Galaxy Camera has now been restored to stock firmware, and any changes you might have made such as rooting have now been reset.

How To Install Xbmc On Apple Tv 2

The excellent media center software XBMC has finally come to Apple TV 2, but beyond being a great media center, if you’re wondering why else you should care I’ll sum it up in one word: 1080p. Yes, using XBMC, you can unleash 1080p video playback on the $99 Apple TV2… the playback suffers from occasional choppiness on uncompressed bluray video, but hey it’s the first release, and could make the ATV2 the cheapest 1080p video playback device on the market.

You’ll need the following to get started:

Apple TV 2 (Amazon link) running iOS 4.1, iOS 4.2.1, or later

Seas0npass to jailbreak the Apple TV 2 (Instructions to jailbreak are below)

A micro-USB cable (this is used for the jailbreak and tethered boot)

The IP address of your AppleTV

Jailbreaking the Apple TV2

The first thing you’ll need to do is to jailbreak your Apple TV, this is made remarkably easy with Seas0nPass, which is arguably one of the easiest jailbreak apps out there for any iOS hardware. If you’re familiar with the process of jailbreaking an iPhone this will be very familiar to you, here’s a quick overview:

Download and launch Seas0nPass (Direct Download link)

You’ll now want to connect the Apple TV to your computer using a Micro USB cable, and then put the AppleTV into DFU mode (follow instructions on the screen for this)

Once in DFU, iTunes will launch and start to restore the Apple TV with the custom IPSW Seas0nPass created, this is how the jailbreak is actually installed

After the AppleTV is jailbroken, you’ll need to disconnect it from your computer briefly and then perform what is called a tethered boot. This basically just means you have to assist the bootloader by connecting it to your computer and using Seas0nPass again, but this time selecting ‘Boot Tethered’ from the menu

Follow the instructions to tethered boot your newly jailbroken AppleTV

Now that your Apple TV2 is jailbroken, you can install the XBMC software onto it.

Install XBMC on the AppleTV 2

Installing XBMC is just a matter of using SSH to connect to the newly jailbroken ATV2 to download and install the software. Here are the instructions from the XBMC team:

ssh [email protected] (fill in your own ATV IP address)

When prompted for your password, enter ‘alpine’ if you haven’t changed it. Now you’ll want to install the XBMC software, execute each of these commands independently:

Next use apt-get:

apt-get update

And finally, install the software:

apt-get install org.xbmc.xbmc-atv2

When XBMC has completed installing, your AppleTV’s built-in media manager FrontRow will restart itself and you will see XBMC in the list of options, just select it to launch XBMC.

I haven’t had the chance to try this out myself yet, but apparently XBMC runs quite well. 720p video runs beautifully as expected, but some uncompressed 1080p videos have occasional stuttering and choppiness as you can see in the video below from Engadget. It’s possible that the stuttering may be resolved with future software updates that better optimize hardware acceleration:

If you don’t have an Apple TV you can still setup a media center on any Mac by using Plex or XBMC. It’s simple, just download the software, grab an HDMI adapter and AUX cable, and your Mac is now a media center.

Oh and while we’re on the topic of XBMC, perhaps less useful but still interesting is that it was also just released for iPhone and iPad. This too requires a jailbreak, and the XBMC app can be found via Cydia.
