Suggested December 2023 How To Install Cwm And Twrp Recovery On Xperia Z

Lots of customization on Android devices like custom ROMs, themes, utility mods and a heck lot more cool tweaks; they all come packed in a zipped file, which can only be flashed/installed using a custom recovery. And only custom recovery. You can’t use the stock Android 3e recovery that comes pre-installed on your device because it only allows you to flash signed official updates, not custom made zips.

Installing a custom recovery on Xperia Z is fairly easy. And thanks to the huge community of third-party developers for making it possible to install recoveries even on bootloader locked devices and that too just as easy as it’s done on bootloader unlocked devices.

A custom recovery also let’s you take a Nandroid backup of your device — the ultimate backup which restores your device to the exact same environment you took the backup in; it literally puts everything back in.

Types of custom recoveries

ClockWorkMod (CWM) recovery: It’s the most popular custom recovery and his been around since the early days of Android. CWM comes in both Non-touch and Touch versions, however you’ll find the non-touch CWM to be more compatible and available.

Recovery for bootloader unlocked Xperia Z

The recoveries shared below are only for official Sony firmwares or modified official firmwares and may not work on AOSP based ROMs. However you can use these recoveries to flash AOSP based ROMs like CM 10.2 and similar ROMs.

CWM Recovery

Recoveries are installed on  Xperia Z using a custom kernel. And these custom kernels are firmware specific. So for example, if your phone is running on firmware version 10.3.1.A.0.244, then you need to flash the kernel specific for that firmware. Below are download links for all firmwares, but before downloading make sure to check your phone’s firmware version.

Check your phone’s firmware version

To check firmware version on your Xperia Z. Go to Settings on your phone » select About phone » Look for Build number. The build number is the firmware version number.

Download CWM kernel

Once you’ve checked your device’s current firmware version, download the kernel specific for your firmware from the list below:

Instructions

We’ll use the 10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware for example in this guide. But you make sure to download and flash only the kernel specific for your firmware.

Extract the fastboot files you downloaded from the link above to a separate folder on your computer

└ You need to transfer the “boot.img” from CWM kernel’s zip file to the folder where you extracted fastboot files on your computer

Now connect your phone in fastboot mode

Switch off your phone

Hold the Volume UP key on your phone and connect it to PC using a USB cable

Type the command given below in command prompt window and hit enter to begin flashing the “boot.img” file fastboot flash boot boot.img

Disconnect your device and let it reboot automatically

Done!

How to boot into recovery

Switch off your Xperia Z first

Switch it back on and the time when you see your phone’s LED notification light turn purple or pink — start pressing either the Volume UP or Volume Down key a couple of times and your phone will reboot into recovery

Enable USB Debugging: Open phone’s Settings » select Developer options » Tick the “USB debugging” checkbox (under Debugging section)

How To Install Twrp On Xiaomi Phones In A Few Simple Steps

TWRP is a radically overhauled version of the aforesaid Recovery. Notably, you can perform tasks like rooting your device after installing TWRP on your Android device. Also, TWRP installation enables you to install a custom ROM. So, let’s take a look at how you can install TWRP on Xiaomi devices. Installing TWRP on your device is as simple as ABC. Nevertheless, you need to be extremely careful during the installation process.

How To Install TWRP On Xiaomi Phones

First off, make sure that you have an unlocked bootloader for your Xiaomi device. A bootloader lock is a system that protects the software of your device. So, unlocking the bootloader is an extremely important step. Notably, you will not be able to make any changes in the device’s software without first unlocking the bootloader. So, after the bootloader is unlocked, we can go to the next step to install TWRP on your Xiaomi device.

Unlocking Bootloader

Unlocking the bootloader isn’t an arduous task. However, it can turn out to be a tricky process on Xiaomi devices. Also, you’d need to connect your device with your Mi Account to unlock the bootloader using a PC. Moreover, it is worth mentioning here that unlocking the bootloader will terminate your phone’s warranty. Also, it will erase the data stored on your handset. The bootloader unlocking process can also disable the cameras on a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 phone.

If you don’t have a Mi Account on your device, create one and sign in. Next, go to the developer options. Now, you need to enable OEM Unlocking here and select Mi Unlock status. The next step involves selecting the “Add account and device” option.

Important Things To Keep In Mind

Make sure that ADB & Fastboot libraries are installed on your computer. Now, download and install Mi Unlock Tool on your PC. Next, reboot your Android device into Fastboot mode. You will now be able to connect your phone to the PC.

Your device’s status and serial number will be visible as soon as you open Mi Unlock Tool. So, all you need to do is to press the unlock button to complete the bootloader unlocking process. However, all the data stored on your phone will be erased during this process. So, ensure that you’ve taken a backup before you start the bootloader unlocking process.

How To Install TWRP On A Device

Now, your device is ready. You can start the TWRP installation process from CMD (command shell) and bootloader screen. Also, you’d need ADB & Fastboot library to complete the TWRP installation process. However, the installation process for the A/B and non-A/B devices is different. A/B system updates (or seamless updates) were a project Google introduced with Android 7 (Nougat) in 2023.

A/B system updates will keep the booting system workable on disk during the OTA (over-the-air) update. This will minimize the chances of an inactive device post update. So, it reduces the likelihood of frequent device replacements. Also, it reduces device reflashes at warranty and repair centers. Notably, there are two types of TWRP installations you can choose from.

Gizchina News of the week

The partition table on non-A/B devices features a recovery partition. So, you can install TWRP directly from fastboot on non-A/B devices such as the Redmi Note 8. To recap, Xiaomi rolled out the Android 11 update with MIUI 12 and virtual RAM for the Note 8 last year. However, the A/B devices do not have a recovery partition. As a result, the ram disk will be patched in boot images (boot_a boot_b).

TWRP Installation On Non-A/B Devices

Several non-A/B devices adopt a simple TWRP installation process. First off, you’d need to download TWRP that is compatible with your Xiaomi device from TWRP’s official website. Now, reboot the device into bootloader mode after downloading the TWRP image. Next, simply connect the device to your PC.

So, the device will be connected to a computer in bootloader mode. You can now open CMD in the image folder in TWRP. Now, run the “fastboot flash recovery filename.img” command once the process is completed. Now, run the “fastboot reboot recovery” command to reboot the device in recovery mode. This will successfully install TWRP on a non-A/B Xiaomi device.

TWRP Installation On A/B Devices

Installing TWRP on an A/B device is more time-consuming than TWRP Installation on a non-A/B device. However, it is a simple process. First, you’d need to boot TWRP. Next, flash the TWRP installer zip file that is compatible with your device. This zip file will patch ramdisks in all slots. So, this will help you install TWRP on your device. You can download the TWRP installer zip file from the official TWRP website.

Likewise, you can download TWRP images from the same site. Now, simply reboot your device into fastboot mode. Once the device has rebooted, run the “fastboot boot filename.img” command. This will ensure that the device boots in TWRP mode. However, you need to bear in mind this is a one-time use “boot” command. You’d need a TWRP installer for permanent installation.

An Improved Experience

Now, go “Install” section and find the “twrp-installer-3.xx-x.zip” file you previously downloaded. Install the aforesaid file from your PC with ADB sideload. TWRP will install in both parts after the operation is complete. So, you have successfully installed TWRP on your Xiaomi phones. TWRP recovery is available on your Xiaomi phone. This will enhance your overall experience.

The highly useful TWRP project enables you to recover and backup your data from here. This is a handy feature in case of a failure. Also, this will allow you to effortlessly root your device with TWRP. Aside from this, you can take a backup of data on your device. Further, you can even install custom ROM on the device.

Htc One Clockworkmod Recovery (Cwm) Guide

It’s inspiring how fast the amazing developers at the XDA development community work at releasing hacks for various devices, sometimes even before the device gets released, as is the case with the soon to be released HTC One. The popular custom recovery – ClockworkMod (CWM) – is already out for the HTC’s 2013 flagship, paving the way for custom ROMs for the device.

But what is ClockworkMod recovery? ClockworkMod recovery (abbreviated as CWM) is the most popular custom recovery for Android devices, developed by Koushik “Koush” Dutta. CWM recovery replaces the stock recovery that is present on every Android device and extends its functionality with a lot more features and options.

The one thing that CWM is mostly used for is flashing custom ROMs on devices, which are basically custom versions of Android that replace the default software that a manufacturer puts on their devices. Other functions of CWM include the ability to factory reset a device, backup and restore a device’s ROM, and flash custom kernels, hacks, and mods.

So if you’re looking to install CWM recovery on the HTC One but need a little help, you’ve come to the right place – our all-in-one guide for the HTC One has easy to understand step-by-step instructions to help you through the procedure to install CWM.

However, there are a few things you must know before you proceed with installing CWM recovery on your device:

Flashing a custom recovery requires unlocking the bootloader on the phone, which permanently voids warranty.

Unlocking the bootloader will wipe all data on the phone, including personal content on the internal storage such photos, music, videos and other files. You can take a backup of everything though and restore it later on.

Accepting official over-the-air software upgrades from HTC might cause issues, so you’ll have to refrain from installing any official updates after flashing recovery (and also unlocking the bootloader).

So make sure you’re okay with the risks involved in flashing a custom recovery as given above, then continue reading below to find out to CWM recovery can be installed on the HTC One.

Compatibility

The procedure described below is only for the HTC One. Do not try it on any other device.

Warning!

The methods and procedures discussed here are considered risky, so try them out at your own risk, and make sure to read each step carefully before attempting anything. We will not be held responsible if anything goes wrong.

Requirements

NOTE: Backup is optional and you can skip this step if you do not wish to back up anything.

Download HTC Sync Manager

NOTE: Skip this step if the HTC Sync software is already installed on your computer.

Unlock the bootloader on your phone using this guide. Unlocking bootloader wipes all data from the phone so make sure you take a backup as mentioned in step 1.

NOTE: If you’ve already unlocked the bootloader on your device, you can skip this step.

Make sure the “Fast Boot” option is disabled in the phone’s Settings » Power menu. If it is enabled, you’ll be unable to make the phone boot into the required mode for flashing recovery.

Flash CWM Recovery

Extract the Fastboot.zip file on your computer to get a folder named Fastboot with four files inside it.

Download the touch version of CWM recovery from the source page. The file should be named something like “recovery-clockwork-touch-*.*.*-m7.img”, where *.*.* will be the current version of recovery.

Copy the CWM file that you downloaded to the Fastboot folder so that you now have a total of 5 files inside.

Turn off your phone. Then, boot into HBOOT/bootloader mode by holding down the Volume down + Power buttons together till the screen turns on. Then, press the power button once to select “FASTBOOT”, after which “HBOOT” will change into “FASTBOOT USB”.

Then, connect your phone to the computer with your USB cable, then wait for Windows to finish installing the drivers (drivers will be installed only the first time you connect the phone to the computer). For reliability, ensure that you use a USB port at the back if you are using a desktop computer, as the front panel ports can be loose and cause problems.

Now, perform the following steps in the command prompt to flash CWM.

Type in fastboot devices in the command prompt and press Enter. If your phone has been detected properly, you will see a device ID show up in command prompt. If nothing comes up, make sure you have installed the drivers, disconnect phone, remove and re-insert battery, and retry the procedure from step 5.

Now, flash CWM recovery on the phone by entering fastboot flash recovery *filename*.img in the command prompt, where *filename* has to be replaced by the name of the recovery file that you have downloaded. For example: fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.0.0-m7.img

After the recovery is flashed, you’ll get a finished/OKAY message in command prompt.

Disconnect the phone, then using volume button, scroll down to highlight “HBOOT”, then select it using the power button.

Then, highlight the “RECOVERY” option, then press power button to reboot the phone into CWM recovery. Once recovery boots up, simply select the “reboot system now” option to reboot the phone into Android.

ClockworkMod recovery is now installed on your HTC One. Make sure to read the “Booting into ClockworkMod Recovery” section below to find out how you can boot into CWM when needed.

Booting into ClockworkMod Recovery

Whenever you want to use CWM recovery, you can boot into it via Fastboot mode. The procedure to boot into CWM recovery is given below.

Turn off the phone.

Then, boot into HBOOT/bootloader mode by holding down the Volume down + Power buttons together till the screen turns on.

Press the Volume Down key a few times till “RECOVERY” is highlighted, then press the power button to select this option. The phone will then reboot into CWM recovery, where you can tap on options to select them.

Rebooting back into Android from CWM recovery can be done by selecting the “reboot system now” option in the main menu of CWM.

Twrp Recovery For Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Sm

TeamWin team just released TWRP recovery for the Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Developer Edition. The device comes with an unlocked bootloader, unlike its retail brother which comes locked and is hard/impossible to root or flash custom recoveries.

Verizon released the developer edition Galaxy Note 4 only a couple of weeks ago and we already have Root and TWRP recovery for the device. Chainfire, the developer of cf-auto-root released root for the Verizon Galaxy Note 4 dev edition last week.

READ: How to Root Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Developer Edition

Also, this is TWRP 2.8 which allows you to connect your Note 4 in MTP mode even from recovery. So, as it often happens, you don’t have to reboot your phone to copy a zip file that you want to flash but forgot to transfer on the phone.

TWRP recovery is also theme-able. There are a ton of cool TWRP themes from various third-party party developers that you can flash to change the looks of recovery installed on your phone.

Verizon Galaxy Note 4 TWRP recovery comes in both .zip and Oin flashable .yar file. We don’t have a custom recovery already installed on our Note 4 so we’ll be using the Odin method for flashing TWRP on Verizon Note 4.
