Posting a picture online comes with risks. Your photo may contain sensitive info or a depiction of someone you don’t want others to see. The good news is that you can easily blur these images before posting them online. There are dozens of available Mac apps to accomplish this. Here, we take you through how you can easily and quickly blur images on your Mac using Skitch or the built-in Photos app.

Blur Images With Skitch

Part of the popular Evernote family of products, Skitch is a fantastic product that everyone should have on their computer.

Launch Skitch if you already have it downloaded or grab it from the Mac App Store.

Look on the left side of the app in the vertical toolbar for “Pixelate,” the second-to-last option. You can also identify it by its icon, which is blurry or pixelated.

Use your mouse to drag the cursor around the area you wish to blur out. This works as a square or rectangle, and you can go back over each blurred area a few times just to be 100 percent sure nothing is visible.

Both ways work the same, so the image doesn’t appear differently if you use one method over the other.

With Skitch, it is really easy to blur images on the Mac. However, if downloading a separate app isn’t for you, there is another method that works with the Photos app, which is pre-installed on Macs.

Editing a photo using the Photos app won’t “blur” an image in the same way the Skitch method will. Instead, using the edit features available through the Photos app, you can “Retouch” an image and remove any sensitive or unwanted info.

Open the preinstalled Photos app on your Mac. The app should be in your deck or available through Mission Control by pressing F4 on your keyboard.

When the edit screen pops up, look for the “Retouch” option about halfway down on the right side of the app.

With the Retouch tool engaged, drag the mouse icon across any part of an image that you wish to hide. You can increase or decrease the size of the pointer to help cover more or less of an image. Whereas Skitch actually blurs using its feature, the Retouch option is more of a smudge.

If you really need to remove something from an image, Skitch is likely the more preferred option. However, Photos is also free and immediately available on your Mac computer, making it an easy choice to get the job done.

If Skitch isn’t your app of choice and the Photos app isn’t something you want to use, apps like SnagIt can do a similar job. Apart from just blurring images, SnagIt is jam-packed with a bunch of features, like taking screenshots, recording your screen, and editing photos and videos.

Press and hold your left mouse button and drag your cursor across the part of the image you want to blur.

In some cases, blurring images can increase or decrease the image size depending on the software you use to edit your image. It can also happen if your exported image is saved in a different file format than its original one.

Here are some websites that are free of charge that allow you to blur images or parts of images. To use some of these options, however, you may have to create an account.

How To Use A Mac Keyboard On Windows Pc

How To Disable Siri On A Mac And Ios

Apple’s virtual assistant Siri, can be helpful, funny, and sometimes irritating.

You can ask it to do almost anything for you from translation to getting information on the weather or news, schedule calls and sending text messages, finding a bedtime story or movie times, or checking your emails if you’re too lazy to do it yourself.

Before Siri, iOS users had voice control though it has fewer features and only allows you to control your Phone, Music, and FaceTime apps by speaking into your iPhone’s mic.

Siri replaced Voice Control to make it a lot easier for you to get stuff done, but it also has its fair share of mistakes. Plus, if you’re overly concerned about your privacy, you wouldn’t want Siri listening in every time you’re talking.

If you don’t use Siri, or you hate it so much you want a “Kill Siri” button added to your Mac or iOS device, we’re going to show you how to disable it from your Apple device. You should know though that disabling Siri means you can’t use any kind of voice control, whether that’s Voice Dial or Dictation too.

There are two ways to disable Siri on your iOS device: partially, by disabling just a few features that you don’t want, or turn it off fully from your device’s Lock Screen.

Both these settings can be switched on or off from the Settings app by going to the Siri & Search menu.

For example, if you choose to turn off the feature that allows Siri to actively listen for the “Hey Siri” command, it toggles that setting off and Siri won’t be activated accidentally.

A warning will appear on your iOS device to disable Siri, so tap Turn Off Siri to completely disable it and turn it off on your device.

Once you disable Siri on iOS, the next step is usually to remove all the voice data from whatever you said to it, which is transmitted to Apple servers and stays there for up to two years.

You can only remove such voice data from the servers by disabling Siri, and also disabling Dictation so that everything is removed.

To do this on your iOS device, go to Settings and tap General.

Tap Keyboard.

Find the Enable Dictation option and disable it. This will completely turn off voice commands for your iOS device.

Disabling Siri on a Mac is just as easy as it is on an iOS device.

Uncheck Enable Ask Siri option, to turn off Siri completely on your Mac.

If you want to remove any of your voice data saved through Siri to Apple servers, you’ll do the same thing as with iOS devices: disable or turn off Dictation.

Turn off Dictation. This not only removes all your voice data from Apple Servers but also turns off voice commands on your Mac.

It’s easy to delete or remove your data from Siri and ultimately on Apple servers. For privacy-conscious people though, this is important especially if you’re concerned about the kind of digital recordings Apple may be holding of your conversations with the virtual assistant.

Apple uses such data for purposes of testing and grading to improve the service. Initially, human contractors listened to the Siri commands iOS or Mac users gave the virtual assistant as part of the grading program, but this has since been suspended.

That said, you may still want to rethink how you use Siri, but at least you now know how to turn it off on your Mac or iOS devices, and how to completely remove any trace of the voice data from Siri on Apple servers.

Toggle off the Improve Siri & Dictation option if it’s on, as this means your iOS device can share voice clips with Apple.

As long as you’ve disabled that option, you can rest assured that Apple can’t review or store the audio of your future interactions from your device.

How To Clear All User Log Files On A Mac

Mac OS has an elaborate application level logging system that monitors and logs various system level and app level functionality, including app crashes, problems, and internal errors within apps. Most of this logging information is only relevant to debugging and developer usage and has little practical usage to the average Mac user, but when you submit a bug report for a crashed app these are the types of logs that are generally gathered and included in that crash report or bug report.

To be perfectly clear, these are not logs of user activity, or anything of the sort. These logs are almost entirely crash and error logs for particular apps. Despite what some third party utilities may claim, deleting user level logs is not a necessary task and nor should this be encouraged. Similar to clearing cache and cleaning temporary files on a Mac, there is no practical benefit to deleting logs for the average Mac user and the vast majority should not do so. If you simply want to view logs, opening the Console app is generally a better approach.

Don’t forget to back up your Mac before beginning. Do not skip backing up a Mac before removing any file.

From the Mac Finder, pull down the “Go” menu and choose “Go To Folder”

Enter the following directory path exactly, including the tilde:

~/Library/Logs

Selectively choose the logs you want to inspect or delete, or alternatively you can select and trash them all

Empty the Trash as usual

It’s very rare for log files to expand to some unruly size or be a burden, so it’s unlikely that you will restore any meaningful disk space by deleting log files, which may take up a couple of megabytes or maybe even just kilobytes.

While removing and deleting log files has nearly no practical benefit, we get asked about this with some regularity. Some Mac users may trash their logs anyway perhaps as part of a series of manual cleaning tasks like clearing out caches and temporary files along with emptying web browser caches in Safari or in Chrome, rebooting, and as part of some general system maintenance. Maybe there is a placebo effect to the user with logs, but unlike rebooting and other system maintenance there really isn’t a benefit to this for most non-developers.

As previously stated, most user log files are logs of app crashes or app errors. Many of the app errors that are logged will never even be apparent to the user, it’s just background activity in the application itself that may be failing or buggy or triggering some other error.

If you use Quick Look or TextEdit to view one of the log files you will find it contains mostly gibberish error messages that have no practical user value, here is an example of one such log:

As you can see almost all of this data is 100% irrelevant and meaningless to the average Mac user, it is mostly aimed at programmers and developers who are debugging their apps.

No, deleting logs will not speed up your Mac. I can think of only one example specific to Terminal app where it is sped up by removing specific system log files, and I have been using a Mac since the 1980s (yes, a virtual dinosaur). As mentioned repeatedly, there is virtually no practical benefit to the average user to delete user logs on a Mac.

How To Set A Video As A Screen Saver On Your Mac

While you may already be enjoying the screen savers that came preloaded on your Mac, you now have a way to add a new kind of screen savers to your Mac. You can now add a video as a screen saver.

Enter SaveHollywood, a Mac application, that allows you to set a video as a screen saver. That way you can have any of your video files play as a screen saver while your Mac is in idle mode. If this is something you wish to get up and running on your machine, here’s how to do so.

SaveHollywood is a lightweight and free application for Macs, and it can be obtained from its official website.

3. On the following screen you will be asked what users you wish to have access to the screen saver. You can select either yourself or all the users on the Mac. If you are going for the latter choipe, you will be asked to enter the administrator username and password.

9. Once a video has been added, you can then adjust the settings for how it should be displayed as your screen saver. The options include the size of the video that you wish to have, frames around the video, background colour, music of the video, and so on.

Your chosen video will now play as your screen saver until you change it to one of the other screen savers on your Mac.
