In Windows 11, the steps to add and remove the Wireless Display feature are a bit different from Windows 10 OS. First, we will talk about the procedure to install the Wireless Display feature to Windows 11. After that, we will see how to uninstall this feature from Windows 11.

The following instructions will help you install the Wireless Display feature on your Windows 11 computer:

Press Win + I keys to launch the Windows 11 Settings app on your system.

DISM /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:App.WirelessDisplay.Connect~~~~0.0.1.0

While installing this feature you can see the progress in the Settings app. After the installation gets completed, you will get a message ‘The operation completed successfully.’

If you get an Install failed message in the Command Prompt, check whether there is any update pending on your system and install it if available. I received the error message while installing Wireless Display via an elevated Command Prompt. After that, I updated my system and the issue was fixed.

To uninstall Wireless Display in Windows 10 via cmd, launch the Command Prompt as an Administrator. Copy and paste the following command in it and hit Enter.

DISM /Online /Remove-Capability /CapabilityName:App.WirelessDisplay.Connect~~~~0.0.1.0

After uninstalling gets completed, restart your computer if you are asked to do so.

How do I delete Wireless Display?

What are green check marks on Desktop icons?

The green check mark icon overlay indicates that it is a synced file or folder. It is seen if you have OneDrive, or Dropbox installed and your cloud sync is enabled for that file or folder. The check marks on files, folders, and icons indicate that these files, folders, and icons are successfully backed up to your cloud storage, and data is locally available on your system.

When you set up OneDrive on your Windows 11/10 computer, it shows you the following three options to manage folder backup:

Desktop

Documents

Pictures

By default, all these three folders remain selected and OneDrive backs up all the files and folders you place inside these folders. You can stop backup anytime for these three folders in OneDrive settings. Backing up your files and folders to OneDrive cloud storage protects your files from being lost permanently in case your system runs into a problem. Hence, these green check marks are because OneDrive is installed on your computer and not because of a virus or malware infection.

If you do not want your files, folders, and icons placed on your desktop to show these green check mark icon overlays, you can remove them.

Let’s see all these fixes in detail.

1] Unlink OneDrive

The green check marks appear because OneDrive keeps running in the background and syncing your data to the cloud. OneDrive has the option to pause sync but the maximum time limit for this is 24 hours. Hence, if you select 24 hours, after 24 hours, you have to pause sync again.

Hence, instead of using the Pause syncing feature, you can unlink OneDrive from your computer. This action will stop syncing your files to the cloud and remove all the Online Only files but the Locally Available files will not be removed. You will be able to access the Locally available files after unlinking OneDrive from your computer.

The steps to Unlink OneDrive from your computer are:

A new window will appear. Select the Account tab.

2] Stop backup in OneDrive

If you do not want to unlink OneDrive from your computer, you can stop backup in OneDrive settings. We have explained earlier that OneDrive keeps syncing the data placed inside the following three folders:

Desktop

Documents

Pictures

%userprofile%

The above command will open your user profile folder that contains Desktop and other folders. Open the Desktop folder and copy all the items inside it to your desktop.

3] Disable it using AutoRuns or ShellExView

You can also use AutoRuns or ShellExView software to remove green check marks from the desktop icons, files, and folders. AutoRuns is a useful tool developed by Microsoft that helps users know which programs are configured to run during system startup or login and when you run different built-in Windows applications. ShellExView is a third-party software that helps users enable and disable shell extensions installed on their Windows computers. Both AutoRuns and ShellExView are portable software which means you need not install them on your system.

Before you proceed, we suggest you back up your Registry and create a System Restore Point.

Remove green check marks from desktop icons using AutoRuns

You can download AutoRuns from the official website of Microsoft. After downloading it, extract the zip file and open the extracted folder. You will find the exe file of AutoRuns there. Run it as an administrator to enable or disable the shell extensions.

After launching AutoRuns, scroll down and locate OneDrive. You will find multiple OneDrive entries, named from number 1 to number 7. If you do not find OneDrive entries, go to the Everything tab. The green check marks on your desktop icons, files, and folders are due to any one of these OneDrive entries. Now, follow the steps written below:

Disable any one of the OneDrive entries, say OneDrive1. To do so, uncheck the checkbox.

Open the task Manager and locate Windows Explorer.

4] Tweak the Registry

You can also remove the green check marks from the desktop icons, files, and folders permanently by deleting the required key from the Registry Editor. In the above fix, we have seen that the OneDrive7 key is responsible for green check marks in my case. Hence, I deleted that key from the Registry Editor, and the problem disappeared. In your case, the key may be the same or different. You can use this trick. But before you delete any OneDrive key, we recommend you create a backup of that key so that you can restore it again.

Open the Registry Editor and go to the following path:

The causes could be many:

A software used to lock folders might be preventing the change in permissions.

The file or folder for which you which to change the permissions might be corrupt.

The Administrator account might not have been activated.

This situation could be problematic especially if the file or folder in question is important. Since the file/folder doesn’t have an owner, no one is technically authorized to change its properties. To resolve this issue, try these suggestions:

Run the Shared Folders Troubleshooter

Uninstall any software which locks folders on the system

Run the CHKDSK command

Enable the Administrator account via elevated Command Prompt

Take ownership of file/folder through Command Prompt

Run the Diagnostic Startup.

You could try the following solutions sequentially to resolve the problem:

1] Run Shared Folders Troubleshooter

Before proceeding to more complicated solutions, you could try running the Shared Folders Troubleshooter as follows:

Select the Shared Folders troubleshooter from the list and run it.

Restart the system once done.

2] Uninstall any software which locks folders on the system

A few software products which can lock folders could be active even when they are not activated. If you are facing the issue in discussion, you might consider uninstalling any such software.

Restart the system.

3] Run the CHKDSK /f command

The CHKDSK utility helps in checking for bad sectors on the hard drive and fix them if possible. An error in the File System could cause the issue in discussion and running the CHKDSK /f  scan could fix it.

Type the command CHKDSK /f in the elevate Command Prompt window and hit Enter to execute it.

Restart the system once the command has executed.

When you restart the system, the CHKDSK scan will process before booting into the system.

4] Enable Administrator account via elevated Command Prompt

If the administrator is the sole owner of the problematic file or folder and the Administrator account is not enabled, you could encounter the error “Unable to display current owner.”

The procedure to enable the Administrator account is as follows:

Search for Command Prompt in the Windows search bar.

In the Command Prompt window, type the following command and press Enter to execute it:

net user administrator /active:yes

Restart the system, and you would get an option to enter Windows as the Administrator.

5] Take ownership of file/folder through Command Prompt

Open the elevated Command Prompt as explained in solution 4.

Type the following command in the elevated Command Prompt window and press Enter to execute it:

If it is successful, restart the system and access the file/folder.

Please remember that commands mentioned in solution 4 enabled the Administrator account and we needed it for solution five too. Once the job is done, you could disable the Administrator account by typing the following command in elevated Command Prompt:

net user administrator /active:no

Once the command has successfully executed, restart the system and login as the intended user to access the file/folder in the discussion.

6] Run Diagnostic startup

In case any drivers or services are interfering and causing the problem, we could try running the system in Diagnostic startup mode. In this mode, the system will boot with minimal drivers, services, etc.

Press Win + R and type the command msconfig. Press Enter to open the System Configuration window.

In the General tab, select Diagnostic startup. Hit Apply and then OK to save the settings.

Restart your system after saving the settings.

Once the system restarts, try accessing the file/folder in the discussion.

If you are still unable to access the problematic file/folder, repeat solution 4 in Diagnostic startup mode.

Once you are done with the troubleshooting, you could change the option to Normal startup in the System Configuration window.
