Suggested January 2024 Holistic Tech Procurement In 2023: Go Beyond Software Reviews

Reviews are a good input to forming a vendor shortlist but various factors including fake or vendor motivated reviews reduce their reliability. Using additional metrics like how much a vendor’s product is being searched on search engines, their number of employees, their references can help paint a more complete picture quickly. And once tech buyers have a shortlist, they can run a more detailed assessment of these vendors taking into account the product’s feature set, pricing etc.

What are software review aggregators?

Software review aggregators aggregate software reviews which include users’ experiences with software products. Aggregators like G2, Capterra, Software Advice, GetApp etc. operate 2 sided markets. On the one side, vendors provide them with profiles of their products and pay them to get more visibility. There are 3 ways different software review aggregators provide visibility to vendors:

What is a B2B software review?

A B2B software review explains the benefits and challenges of a B2B software. There are millions of online reviews in sources like G2, Capterra, Gartner etc. One of the largest review aggregators, G2 has collected 1.1 million reviews as of August/2023. Though this number may seem large, compared to the total number of software users, it is tiny. Every internet user uses multiple software products and with ~4 billion software users, at most a few users out of 10,000 users ever leave reviews.

We said at most here because reviewers could be leaving multiple reviews of different products, even reducing the share of users who leave reviews. Another complicaiton is that G2 is not the only review aggregator but other review aggregators are likely to have fewer reviews or they do not disclose their number of reviews.

Why don’t most users write reviews?

Writing reviews without any compensation is a thankless task that a rational human pursuing self-benefit would not engage in.

A sad fact of B2B marketing is that you will never know the the reactions of your most valuable users. They will use your service, pay for it and even if they get great value and benefit out of it, they will never write a review. This is not so surprising since writing a review by an individual yields almost negligible benefits to that individual. The only benefit of writing reviews is that every written review may encourage others to write reviews, too. This may help you evaluate products in the future. So in short by investing 5-10 minutes, you get almost no benefit.

If it is not rational to write reviews, why do reviewers write them?

Why do reviewers write reviews?

We can think of 6 ways that positive reviews get created: vendors writing reviews under pseudonyms (e.g. fake reviews), incentives provided by the brand or review aggregators, complaints or attempts to get support, an emotional connection to the brand, personal branding and altruism.

Reviews by vendors (fake reviews)

I expect but can not positively establish that most reviews by small software providers or in categories with few reviews are fake. When a vendor has no reviews or when there are only a few reviews in a category, the incentives to create a review is quite high. Vendors work with agencies or just write fake reviews themselves. These can be impossible to catch as they could be written by users with multiple reviews and use carefully selected language to make the reviews look genuine. They could also include screenshots or other details that make the reviews appear realistic by mentioning specific details.

I also suspect reviews in large categories to be partially driven by vendors especially in competitive categories where having a few more reviews can move a vendor a few points up in the rankings.

Fake reviews can also be negative. Competitors can easily leave horrible reviews to the competition.

These may seem like hypotheses but there are numerous anecdotes that point to the presence of fake reviews in all areas of business:

Incentives come from two sources: vendors or the review aggregators. One of these parties pay the reviewer for the review. Incentives include Amazon credits, free coffee etc. Incentives create misalignment of incentives between the review reader who wants to hear facts and the reviewer who either

wants to minimize his/her effort in leaving a review (in case of review platform incentives)

wants to help the brand giving him/her a gift (in case of vendor incentives)

You could argue that these are insignificant incentives but they are not so insignificant. Writing a review is a 5-10 minute affair. Getting $10 for 5 minutes is not a bad outcome for most workers considering that minimum wage is $7-12 per hour in most US states. And if the incentives were not significant there wouldn’t be thousands of people complaining when they did not receive them. Even leaders of review platforms publicly share reviews which underline that reviewers leave reviews for incentives and stop working with brands that don’t provide the promised incentives:

Incentives introduce bias. Most of the time, reviewers are invited to submit their reviews by the vendor or the review aggregator invites them to submit a review on behalf of the vendor. If you value the incentive and if you are reviewing a company that enabled you to get that incentive, it is impossible to be objective.

We have not crawled the review aggregators to identify what percentage of reviews receive incentives and most review aggregators do not disclose that data. However, there are data points showing that a significant portion of reviewers get incentives. When you look at the reviews about any review aggregator on another review aggregator and you will notice people complaining that they did not get the incentive provided by the review aggregator. Ideally such reviews should also exist on the individual review aggregator website but they probably find a way to declare them invalid. We could prepare a honesty index for a review aggregator by measuring the reviews about itself on its own platforms vs. its reviews on other platforms.

Vendor incentives

Especially incentives provided by vendors can create a strong bias in reviews. Trustradius and Capterra disclose sources of their reviews. According to Trustradius, while ~50% of vendor sourced reviews give the perfect score, only ~20% of independently sourced reviews provide the perfect score.

This is the easiest white hat way to boost a product’s reviews. When vendors ask their customers for reviews, they ask for reviews from the best ones and provide incentives to make sure that they complete reviews. This results in glowing reviews of mediocre products. For example, Gartner has accepted that vendors cherry picked their customers to boost their review scores on Gartner’s review aggregator Peer Insights.

Complaints

Most of my experiences in getting support for incorrect charges or bug fixes were slow and painful. Complaints on social media and review aggregators get more visibility and could be resolved faster. Again, we can only provide anecdotal examples but there are reports of startups prioritizing more visible complaints over less visible ones.

Emotional connection

Some B2C brands have formed lasting connections with their customers. One of my friends raised money for his favorite neighborhood bar during the coronavirus shutdown to make sure that it doesn’t go bust. Such a connection is less likely in the B2B world but those reviews exist. When Google added expiring video call links to its meetings by default, I was very pleasantly surprised as I had a lot of trouble with Teams. However, this was not enough for me to leave a review.

Alturism

Reviews are useful to others and helping others is a human indeed. It is impossible to measure what share of reviews just come from altruistic users. However, it is unlikely to be a significant share given how we, as a society, are showing indifference to subjects that are a lot more important than software reviews such as climate change or income equality.

Personal branding

Some influencers build audiences around their views. However, this is likely to form a minor influence in reviewing as we have not seen any B2B enterprise software review focused influencers. Famous professionals’ views are definitely valued but they tend to share it on Linkedin or their own websites rather than submitting it to a review aggregator where their review will be among hundreds of other reviews.

How review aggregators respond to these issues?

Most of the time by saying that they have a system in place to manage it. To be honest, this is a complex situation because it is not possible to prove that fake reviews do not represent a significant part of their reviews. Neither them nor any outside party can do that. It is possible to show that some reviews are fake but that would not solve this issue as the fake reviews could be just a few examples.

We have seen a few approaches by the review aggregators:

Trustradius

Out of all B2B software review aggregators, they seem to have the most announcements when it comes to review quality. They are still an independent company (not owned by Gartner) and therefore they can still call out others’ deficiencies. It is harder to do for Gartner’s brands like Capterra or GetApp as they need to be careful in their communication to not harm other Gartner brands.

Their initiatives include:

They have rejected 35% of reviews in 2023 which points to their efforts to combat review fraud. However, we or any one else can not tell whether the ratio should be 35%, 50% or some other number.

G2 What are reviews useful for?

Given the complexity of achieving honesty in reviews, it is not reasonable to rely only on them. However, they are definitely useful in:

Validating popularity of top software solutions: Solutions with hundreds of reviews across multiple review aggregators points to either an extremely diligent vendor or general adoption of the software. However, this approach can not be used for more niche areas where there are a limited number (a couple hundred or less) reviews in total. A vendor could easily flood the review websites with fake reviews and get ahead in such shallow markets

Identifying potential issues: Negative reviews are less likely to be fake. Most vendors have numerous competitors. Spending time and effort to create bad reviews of many software solutions is unlikely to be a productive effort.

What are the limitations of reviews?

We have discussed in detail on how reviews can be manipulated by vendors. Another issue is that getting insights from reviews is slow and time consuming. No one has the time to read tens of reviews of each potential vendor to identify potential issues. To solve this issue, we have started collecting commonly used positive and negative phrases about products. Soon, we will be launching this feature in our lists on our main website.

What is the solution?

Reviews are imperfect and knowing their imperfections help us design better ranking systems. In our product lists, we combine several factors and share our input data transparently to make it easier to choose. The data that go into our product lists include:

Number of times different products are searched on search engines

Number of online visitors of the vendor

Number of employees of the vendor

All online reviews of the product

Momentum: Changes in all of these metrics over time

While these metrics are not all that we have collected on vendors, this is our day 0. We will continue to build the most transparent and effective list of products in all technology categories.

Best Gaming Keyboards 2023: Reviews & Buying Advice

Don’t worry; here, we explain the different features you should consider when on the market for a gaming keyboard, along with a selection of the best gaming keyboards available in 2023.

While you’re at it you should probably check out the best gaming mice to go with your fancy new keyboard, and our pick of the best regular keyboards in case you realise you don’t need all the fancy gaming-specific features after all.

Best gaming keyboards 2023

1. Logitech G915 – Best overall

Pros

Low-profile design

CHOC GL switch

Great wireless performance

Cons

No hot-swappable keycaps

Expensive

The Logitech G915 is the first 9-series keyboard from the company in quite some time, and the wait has been worth it. The G915 is a stunningly thin low-profile gaming keyboard –22mm thick, to be precise – without compromising on the experience and performance that gamers want from a mechanical keyboard.

The body is comprised of a 5052 aluminium alloy top case and a steel-reinforced base to provide a keyboard that is robust, durable, strong and weighty – you don’t want your keyboard skating around your desk during intense in-game moments, do you? And, of course, it wouldn’t be a gaming keyboard without full Lightsync RGB backlighting customisable via the company’s G Hub software.

Alongside the mechanical keys, you’ll find soft-touch profile switch and media control buttons and a gorgeous ridged metallic volume wheel. Our only complaint is that the function of the wheel can’t currently be customised via G Hub, although we hope that changes in the future. There are five macro keys for you to customise, though!

The G915 is also wireless, boasting Logitech’s proprietary Lightspeed wireless tech that provides 1ms response times, translating to lightning-fast response times during those crucial gaming moments. The keyboard also features standard Bluetooth support, allowing you to connect to a secondary device and switch between the two with the press of a button – ideal for streamers that have separate capture and gaming PCs.

Of course, with all those shiny RGB lights, you might worry about battery life – but you shouldn’t. The G915 lasts 30 hours with RGB backlighting enabled, which isn’t bad, but if you disable it, it jumps up to a whopping 1100 hours. The battery charges from 0-100 in three hours on average, and it can be used while it’s charging too.

If the idea of charging the keyboard is off-putting, we’d recommend the Logitech G815. It boasts the same design and features as the G915 but it’s wired-only (and a bit cheaper too, at £169.99/$199.99).

2. Mountain Everest Max – Best modular keyboard

Pros

Modular design

Premium build

OBS Studio integration

Cons

Expensive

No Mac support

Offering a blend of premium materials, exceptional build quality and genuine keyboard innovation, the Everest Max has the potential to be the ultimate modular keyboard – although it does come at a premium.

At its core, the Everest Max offers a TKL design ideal for gaming with a full-size keyboard and per-light RGB lighting. The two brushed aluminium faceplates give the keyboard a premium, weighty feel, and the squishy palm rest provides ergonomic support during longer gameplay sessions.

That’s fairly standard, but the Everest Max takes things a step further with its modular design. Along the sides of the keyboard you’ll find several USB-C ports, not for peripherals but other Everest Max accessories. Those come in the form of a premium media dock/display dial combination that attaches to the top right, and a number pad that you can attach to either the left or right of the keyboard.

The display dial is the real standout element of the dock system, offering a simple way to get at-a-glance information on PC performance, adjust volume, change the RGB pattern and much more, and when it’s not in use, it can display fun graphics and logos too. The Numpad is just as exciting, with an additional row of customisable display keys that turn it into something resembling Elgato’s Stream Deck.

In fact, using the Base Camp software for PC, you can take things a step further. Using the software, you can program the display keys to open certain apps or games, and there’s OBS Studio support for streamers, giving you quick access to streaming-specific macros at your fingertips. It’s also where you can program custom actions for the display dial, and you can customise the per-key RGB lighting too.

The joy of a customisable modular keyboard is that you can tweak your setup on a much more granular level than most other keyboards available in 2023. If you want one keyboard for work and play and you’ll make use of features like the display dial and display keys, the Everest Max is a capable option.

3. SteelSeries Apex Pro – Best for actuation customisation

Pros

Adjustable key actuation

Multiple profiles

Mini OLED display

Cons

Not every key is adjustable

Expensive

Best Prices Today:

This flagship gaming keyboard from SteelSeries is more than just a looker, and it has one killer feature that is (so far) pretty unique: adjustable actuation.

The custom OmniPoint mechanical switches can be adjusted to any actuation point between 0.4mm and 3.6mm. In layman’s terms, that means it can register your keypress from the slightest of nudges through to a full depression down to the board, making the keyboard as fast or slow as you like.

Naturally you can set multiple profiles, and even adjust actuation per-key, meaning you can set one comfortable level for typing and another for gaming, or even custom gaming profiles per key – with a slow actuation for special attacks you don’t want to risk wasting but a faster response on your movement keys, for example.

It’s a phenomenal trick, but it’s not all the Apex Pro has going for it. There’s RGB lighting (also per-key), a magnetic wrist rest, USB passthrough power, and 3-way cable routing underneath the board.

There’s one big caveat to the Apex Pro, which is that not every key uses the OmniPoint switches. The main portion of the keyboard does, but the Fn, arrow, and NumPad keys don’t have the adjustable actuation – so bear that in mind in case any of those are in regular rotation for you.

It’s also not cheap at £199/$199 – though you can save a little by opting for the tenkeyless option – but this is about as sturdy and full-featured a keyboard as you’re going to find, so we’d say it’ll be worth the cost for some.

4. Hexgears Venture – Best for work and play

Pros

Kalih Choc switches

Low-profile design

Wireless connectivity

Cons

No programmable keys

Varying battery life

No palm rest

The Hexgears Venture is one of the least gaming-y gaming keyboards in this chart, but don’t hold that against it: this is a phenomenal mechanical keyboard with per-key RGB lighting – it’s just one that also wouldn’t look out of place in an office.

The most unique feature here is that it uses low-profile Kailh Choc mechanical switches, which give a typing profile closer to a laptop than a classic mechanical board. That means the Venture is compact, comfortable if you’re used to a laptop or membrane keyboard, and is lightning fast to type (or game) on.

Beyond simply being a mechanical board, the main ‘gaming’ feature is the lighting. There’s not only per-key RGB lighting, but also an RBG light ring that runs around the underside of the keyboard’s edge. The two sets of lighting are controlled separately – so you can have them synchronised or clashing – though they’re only controllable from the on-board controls, with no current software option to customise things.

The Venture is also missing out on gaming luxuries like extra programmable keys, and that’s in part because it’s designed to appeal beyond the gaming market. The slimline, minimalist aesthetic makes this just as appropriate to an office as a gaming rig, so it’s the perfect keyboard for anyone who needs to game and work from the same machine.

There’s Bluetooth support if you want to use the Venture wirelessly, with hot-switching between up to four connections. Battery life varies though – you’ll get a few weeks of use without the lighting, or just 16 hours of active time if you stick the RGBs on. Still, for gaming you might prefer to use it wired anyway, and Hexgears includes a braided USB-C cable for charging the rechargeable AA batteries or just using the whole thing wired.

The Venture won’t be the right keyboard for you if you want a comprehensive set of macro keys and extra features – there isn’t even a palm rest. But if you just want a mechanical keyboard with RGB lights, the option to run it wirelessly, and a design that you wouldn’t be embarrassed to show your mum, the Venture is very hard to beat.

5. Roccat Vulcan TKL Pro – Best TKL keyboard

Pros

Compact TKL design

Titan Switch Optical Keys

Great performance

Cons

Expensive

No macros

Black model shows dirt build-up

Best Prices Today:

The Asus ROG Strix Scope TKL Deluxe might be a bit of a mouthful, but it’s also the flagship keyboard from Asus’ gaming-focused sub-brand, Republic of Gamers, offering a high level of performance with a surprisingly small footprint.

The TKL Deluxe features a tenkeyless design, which, for those at home, means it’s missing the number pad, allowing the keyboard to be much more compact than the competition. You might question why you’d want a smaller, portable mechanical keyboard and we have one reason: more room to manoeuvre the mouse. It’s especially handy if want you drop down the DPI for finer control over your sniper aim in online shooters, because you need a lot of space to register bigger movements.

But while it’s smaller, Asus has made the left CTRL-key larger to avoid accidentally hitting the Windows key instead of crouching – we’ve all been there, right? It’s admittedly one of the smaller design elements of the TKL Deluxe, but it shows the attention to detail that Asus has gone to with its flagship gaming keyboard.

But the coolest feature, by far, is the inclusion of the Stealth key. You’ll find the key marked by a guy in a hoodie and, with a single press, the keyboard hides all active windows and mutes audio, perfect for those times when you shouldn’t really be gaming but the urge to play Apex Legends is too great. Once the coast is clear, hitting the Stealth button again restores the windows and unmutes your audio. Handy, right?

You’ve even got a padded magnetic wrist rest for longer sessions, but using it covers up the cool bottom RGB strip that illuminates the surface in front of it.

Of course, with this level of functionality on offer, the Strix Scope TKL Deluxe isn’t cheap, but we think it’s well worth the money.

6. Mad Catz S.T.R.I.K.E 4 – Best keycaps

Pros

Matte, concave keycaps

Cherry MX Switches

Eye-catching design

Cons

No Macro keys

Muted RGB lighting

Odd keyboard feedback

Best Prices Today:

You’ll also find anti-ghosting tech on-board that helps log and process every single keypress, but that’s fairly standard in gaming keyboards at this price point.

Beneath the keys, you’ll notice what the company calls Chameleon RGB Lighting. That’s standard RGB lighting to everybody else, with the S.T.R.I.K.E 4 offering per-key lighting along with 18 preset LED effects that’ll jazz up your PC gaming setup. The lights are fairly muted compared to other gaming keyboards on the market, and while that may sound like a drawback, we see it as a plus – how many times have you been distracted when gaming by the bright pulsating lights on your keyboard when gaming? Exactly.

That can be further enhanced via the F.L.U.X companion app for PC, which allows you to customise not only the lighting setup on a per-game and per-key basis, but allows you to remap keys and create macros to get the upper-hand on your opponents in the heat of battle. The only real drawback is that the S.T.R.I.K.E 4 doesn’t offer dedicated macro keys, although you could repurpose one of the many media/function keys available.

Whether you want a gaming keyboard for the lighting or the performance, the Mad Catz S.T.R.I.K.E 4 is a great option.

7. Corsair K65 RGB Mini – A stylish 60% keyboard

Pros

Compact design

Responsive

iCUE software

Cons

Keycap markings hard to see

No sound dampening

No flip-out feet

Best Prices Today:

The K65 RGB Mini is Corsair’s first 60% keyboard and isn’t called the K60 because that name has already been used. You could criticise Corsair for being a bit late to the party, but the K65 has everything and does everything you’d want from this compact form factor.

It’s useful where space is at a premium but you want a high-quality, responsive keyboard for gaming. As you’d expect from Corsair, the RGB lighting is excellent, with the ability to control and change the effects with keyboard shortcuts,  not only via the iCUE software.

Using iCUE you can remap keys and customise effects, and these are saved to the hardware itself so you can travel with the K65. There’s also on-board macro recording.

You’ve still got all the keys that are ‘missing’: they’re available by using the FN button and the symbols printed on the side of the keycaps. Unfortunately, these aren’t transparent so don’t light up and can’t be seen in the dark. The bottom row has a standard layout so you can swap in your own keycaps.

There’s an optional ‘radiant’ spacebar with a triangle pattern that lets the three LEDs shine through more than the standard one: both are included in the box, along with a Corsair-logo’d keycap.

There’s a choice of Cherry MX Red or Speed switches: it’s odd that Corsair didn’t use its own OPX switches alongside the Axon processor. The highlight is the 8,000Hz polling, but this isn’t the default setting (it’s 1,000Hz). Do you need 8K polling? Probably not, and do bear in mind it will have an impact on your CPU load.

Aside from the choice of switches, there are a number of other niggles with the K65. First, there’s no sound damping at all, so it’s quite a noisy keyboard. Second, the USB-C port isn’t quite in the centre which, once you notice, is an annoyance. Third, there are no flip-out feet, so there’s just one angle.

So for those who aren’t die-hard Corsair fans, Ducky’s cheaper One 2 Mini RGB is a 60% to consider as well.

8. Roccat Vulcan 120 Aimo – Best build quality

Pros

Premium build quality

Raised keys

Titan Switch Tactile

Cons

No Macro keys

No Mac software

Large footprint

If you’re looking for something a little more premium than Roccat’s Horde Aimo, then look no further than the Vulcan 120 Aimo. It’s the premium model in Roccat’s keyboard range, complete with a premium design that would work well at home or in the office and features we’d love to see introduced on other gaming keyboards.

The shining feature of the Vulcan 120 Aimo is the Titan Switch Tactile, a new switch exclusively developed by Roccat for use in its keyboards. The switch provides quicker response times – up to 20 percent faster according to Roccat – without having to apply much pressure on the key, and it’s noticeable in use when both gaming and typing in general.

The switch is housed in a transparent cover that allows the backlit LED lighting to shine through brightly, as well as provide a glimpse at Roccat’s engineering prowess. While the lighting on Roccat’s Horde Aimo left a lot to be desired, the lighting on the Vulcan 120 Aimo is much more vivid and responsive.

The keyboard boasts several built-in lighting modes, all adjustable via the dedicated FX button and the dial in the top-right of the keyboard. The dial has several uses, from adjusting volume to tweaking the colour pattern on the keyboard, and can be customised for other uses via the Roccat software for PC.

Not all gaming keyboards are born equal, and there are features that you should look out for when on the hunt for a new one.

Membrane vs mechanical

One of the principal differences is the keys themselves, and whether the keyboard is mechanical or membrane-based. Membrane keyboards use a layer of conductive plastic underneath the keys which forms an electrical contact when pressed. Mechanical keyboards, on the other hand, use physical switches underneath each key, which are actuated when pressed.

Mechanical keyboards are generally said to be more crisp and responsive and keyboards using the high-quality Cherry MX mechanical switches are a firm favourite of PC gamers, allowing for faster, more precise keystrokes.

The principal downside of mechanical keyboards is that they’re more expensive and bulky, versus more streamlined membrane models. There are also a variety of mechanical switches, such as the Gateron, Kailh, Romer-G and QS1 switches others in the market today – however, the Cherry MX switches are still the most popular switches out there.

RGB lighting

Of course, how a keyboard feels is only part of its appeal; you want it to look good as well. Many gaming keyboards now come equipped with backlighting, allowing you to see what you’re typing even in the dark, as well as often enabling you to program specific colours or patterns for aesthetic appeal.

There are two types to look out for; per-key and zones. The former allows you to customise the colour for each key, and usually comes with a range of stunning RGB effects and can be used to highlight specific keys when gaming, while the latter only lets you customise lighting on a per-zone basis.

Layout and macro keys

Layout is also an important aspect of gaming keyboards. Many games rely on lightning-fast reflexes, and a split-second can mean the difference between glorious success and humiliating, abject failure. For this reason, gaming keyboard layouts are optimised for maximum efficiency, with ergonomic layouts, programmable keys and numerous shortcuts meaning that everything you need is always right where you need it.

Part of this is macro keys: programmable buttons to which you can assign long, complicated strings of keystrokes. This enables you to execute complex commands and manoeuvres with a single button press, saving time and effort and letting you focus on your gaming strategy. You can even create multiple profiles with separate macros, allowing you to tailor your macro sets to specific games.

Many additional factors can influence a gaming keyboard’s appeal – the design and build quality, the convenience of its configuration software, additional multimedia keys and so on. You may find that if you’re only an occasional gamer, you’re perfectly happy with the most basic of peripherals. But for those of us that consider gaming a serious hobby, upgrading to a dedicated keyboard will change the way you play.

Tech That Died In 2023: We Bid Farewell To…

It’s the end of 2023. The last year of a glorious decade that brought us the iPad, the Ultrabook, wearables, VR, and a fleet of smart home devices. Okay, none of those things happened in 2023, but this past year was still important to the passing decade. This was the year that several infamous services and gizmos headed off into the horizon, or faded into darkness after hanging on far too long.

Microsoft: Mistakes were made

Mark Hachman / IDG

Windows 10 Mobile reaches the final, final end.

Windows 10 Mobile: Speaking of hanging on for far too long. In December, we saw the complete end to Microsoft’s homegrown smartphone effort. On December 10, 2023, Microsoft stopped delivering security patches to Windows 10 Mobile devices.

Anyone still rocking the HP Elite x3 (which was actually a really great phone) or Lumia 650 can still use their handsets, just without the backing or support of Microsoft. If something breaks, or a horrific vulnerability destroys the Metro interface as we know it, users are out of luck. That’s for regular folks, anyway. Corporate types have a lifeline to carry on for a little bit longer, just as they did with Windows XP.

It’s a shame that Microsoft’s mobile effort came to this point. Windows 10 Mobile and its predecessors were an original take on what a smartphone could be. It looked and behaved nothing like the grid of icons on an Android or iOS device, but it was still very usable. Unfortunately, a toxic mix of lackadaisical carrier support, poor developer interest, and indifference from smartphone buyers sealed the fate of Windows phones long ago.

Microsoft Store Books: The trouble with digital goods is they can disappear if the retailer goes out of business. That’s what happened in July, 2023, when Microsoft exited the literary scene, and ebooks purchased from the Microsoft Store stopped working.

Microsoft’s ebook venture had been short-lived, and to the company’s credit, it didn’t just flip the table and walk away. The company said it would refund all book purchases for its approximately six ebook customers.

Mark Hachman / IDG

Windows 10’s My People.

The idea behind the feature was interesting enough. You’d select five contacts, and then shortcuts for messaging them would sit in your taskbar. You could send messages or receive notifications from your peeps. The idea was to bring the People, Mail, and Skype Windows 10 apps into one spot where you could contact the people most important to you, be they colleagues, family members, or friends.

Microsoft

Microsoft’s online games: This one wasn’t really a mistake, and more of an “all good things come to an end” moment. In July, Microsoft started shutting down its servers for Internet Backgammon, Checkers, Spades, Hearts, Reversi, and MSN Go. July was when Windows XP users lost access to the games, and Windows 7 users will lose support on January 22, 2023. Interestingly, that’s eight days after Microsoft ends support for Windows 7 itself, but we’ll save that story for next year.

Shattered AR/VR dreams

Oculus

Everything seemed to be going well until about 2023, as Android Central reports, and then it was pretty much over. Oculus moved on to the Oculus Go, and Samsung just gave up.

Explorer Edition Google Glass: Google Glass was another interesting experiment that never really went anywhere. In December, Google announced it would offer one final update for the Google Glass Explorer Edition. The update removes the need to use a Google account on Glass, and it also cuts the connection to back-end services.

Game Over

Valve

Beyond the two boxes, Steam also had its controller. That was easily the most revolutionary item in its living room strategy, and yet its time finally came in 2023. The controller bade farewell in December, when they were sold off for a measly $5.

Sony

PlayStation Vue: Every major tech trend has the same familiar pattern. It starts with a ton of companies jumping on for the ride. Over time, competitors start to fall away, until the winners are left standing.

While Sony never officially explained the reason for PlayStation Vue’s disappearance, reports say the subscriber base wasn’t large enough, and the service couldn’t keep up with the competition.

Google cuts its losses

Google

Google Cloud Print

Google Print: It was a shame when Google announced in November it would give up on Google Cloud Print. The free feature allowed you to print from anywhere to your home printer. It was also the key way to print on Chrome OS devices. By the time Google Cloud Print disappears on January 21, 2023, Chrome OS devices will have a native printing experience to satisfy both enterprise and consumer users. But to send that PDF from the cafe to your home printer, you’ll need a different service.

YouTube

YouTube Gaming App: You just can’t beat Twitch, at least when it comes to live-streaming games. Still, YouTube decided to give it a try in 2023, with the launch of its YouTube Gaming app. It  featured all things gaming, including the ability to follow certain games and view live streams.

Google

Chromecast Audio: Google’s Casting platform is a brilliant idea. It relies on a feature built into apps you already use to send streams from your phone to any modern television via a cheap HDMI dongle. It’s a fantastic tool for video, but it didn’t catch on for music.

Google released an audio-only dongle in 2023 that turned any pair of speakers with a 3.5mm jack into a Spotify-friendly set-up. Four years later, Google discontinued the music-focused streaming device, as reported by Android Police. There was hope the Google Nest Mini might become an alternative to Chromecast Audio by having a built-in audio jack, but that was not to be. You can stream audio to a Google Home or Nest Mini, but currently, there is no Google-branded alternative to the Chromecast Audio, and that’s a shame.

Google

Google Plus logo

Google+: In April, Google closed its failed social network Google+ for good. There was some big excitement around the social network when it first started in 2011, but within a few years it was a ghost town.

Google

Inbox by Gmail: Gmail’s Inbox came out in 2014 with a brand new way to organize your email. It grouped messages into subject categories such as travel, purchases, and so on. Gmail already had something similar with its tabbed interface introduced in 2013, but Inbox took that even further with more fine-grained categories.

It was a nice idea, but convincing large numbers of people to use it instead of, or in addition to, Gmail was just never going to happen. Google lost interest in keeping up with the app, and started folding some of its features directly into Gmail. Then in April Google, cleared out Inbox for good.

Hollywood turns out the (UltraViolet) light

Ultraviolet

UV logo

In an attempt to offer a better alternative to piracy, Hollywood came up with the UltraViolet digital rights locker. Released in 2011, the idea was you’d buy a movie and then a get a digital version along with it. The digital version would exist in your own personal digital locker, and you’d be free to view it on the device of your choice.

That brings us to the end of our look at tech that kicked the bucket in 2023. Don’t be too sad. Part of the journey is the end, as they say in the comic book movies. Besides, the tech journey begins anew in 2023.

Although not everyone wants to admit it, we all look for the packaging when deciding whether to buy a product or not.

It has to be attractive, yet to the point, and it needs to subconsciously make the customer buy it over any other product.

Designing such packaging is thus no easy task, as you not only need a good sense of style but also a good graphic design tool to go with it.

Since a sense of style is not something you can download, you can choose what tool to use when creating your product’s packaging. Depending on your choice, you can eventually make your job a whole lot easier.

As such, we’re going to be listing a few software tools that are to be the best of the best when it comes to designing the packaging or pretty much any product imaginable.

Topping out our list is a world industry-standard and best software for packaging design that has dominated the market for years now.

Adobe Illustrator is a vector-based graphic design program that allows you to unleash your wildest imaginations when it comes to visuals.

It doesn’t matter if you are interested in designing a simple 2-color logo or a banner the size of a stadium with all the colors of the rainbow, Illustrator has everything you need.

The program comes with an extensive library of tools, brushes, and extensions that can be used to enrich your experience using it.

That being said, even a task such as designing the packaging of a product is a piece of cake with Adobe Illustrator.

The software features layer support, so your packaging can contain all the elements that you can ever dream of.

One great thing about is that it features plenty of tools that automate the creative process in an intuitive way, so less time focusing on doing basic tasks and more time focusing on what truly matters.

Here are some of Adobe Illustrator’s main features:

24/7 Customer Support

An almost unlimited supply of resources

Plenty of tutorial guides

A complete toolset

Familiar UI for those used to Adobe Photoshop

Are you wondering which software is used for packaging design? If you’re not all that versed with graphic design tools, then maybe Adobe Illustrator’s UI might seem a bit scary.

As such, if you are willing to part with a few of the tools and features, you could always choose a program like CorelDRAW.

While still a solid vector-based graphic design tool, CorelDRAW is far more user-friendly thanks to the cleaner and more intuitive UI.

However, unlike Illustrator, CorelDRAW is far more limited in terms of what it can do, as it is mostly directed towards those that want to make simpler designs, such as logos, or infographics.

This doesn’t mean that you cannot use it for packaging designs, just that you won’t be able to do everything you want with it just as easy.

Here are some of CorelDRAW’s main features:

Intuitive interface

A solid set of tools and features

Full layer control

Not too resource-intensive

Great for designing logos as well

This next product is probably new to you since it hasn’t been on the market for all that long as compared to the other entries, but that doesn’t mean it is not a good choice.

However, do not get fooled by its short time, because this doesn’t mean that it is bad since it comes with quite an impressive toolset.

Expert tip:

By using this program you can create your own professional looking graphics with easy-to-use design tools that make your projects look like you paid a graphic designer.

This is all thanks to the menus that are arranged in a way that is both logical and intuitive, as you can almost tell where you can find a certain feature even if it is your first time using the program.

Those of you with prior Photoshop or Illustrator experience will find the UI to be very familiar, but those of you that are hard-core Windows fans may not like the macOS-inspired look.

However, if you love designing on the go, such as on a tablet, then you’ll love how Affinity Designer integrates itself with the device.

Regardless of which, if packaging design is what you are looking for, then Affinity Designer has all the tools that you may ever need, including font bundles, illustration kits, brush packs and more.

If you’re on a budget and are not bothered by the occasional bug here and there, then Inkscape is definitely the tool that you should be looking at.

Taking into consideration the fact that it is completely free, the sheer number of features and tools that Inkscape has is amazing.

More so, the fact that it is open-source makes it an ideal candidate for a large number of plugins that can add even more functionality to the base program.

As far as graphic design goes, Inkscape is perfectly capable of creating pretty much anything, from tiny logos to digital art and even billboards and banners.

Unfortunately, being free means that technical support is non-existent, but if you browse their forums, you are bound to find a solution at some point.

This product is completely free, without any hidden costs, although you can contribute through donations if you wish to support its developement.

Here are some of Inkscape’s main features:

Designing your packaging in a way that will draw the attention of potential customers is basically winning half the battle.

Thus, it is always good to invest in a very good software tool when it comes to designing your product. Therefore, make sure that your final choice suits your needs.
