Suggested March 2024 ‘Greyhound’, Starring Tom Hanks, Has Become The Largest Opening Weekend Release For Apple Tv+

Apple TV+ hasn’t been around for long, only launching to the public in late 2023, but it has already seen some success as far as content is concerned. It might not have the numbers, but subscribers appear to be happy with the quality of most of its shows and films so far.

While initial reviews for shows like The Morning Show, For All Mankind, and See were a little rough, as the shows progressed towards their first season finales many fans jumped on board. Since then, Apple TV+ has welcomed new entries like the film The Banker starring Anthony Mackie and Samuel L. Jackson, and shows like Defending Jacob starring Chris Evans, which has become one of the most popular pieces of entertainment on the streaming service since launching earlier this year.

Here’s the trailer:

The latest information regarding Greyhound‘s release comes from Deadline, based on what the publication was told from unnamed sources “close to Apple”. Unsurprisingly, Apple isn’t going out of its way to divulge any exact numbers –a terrible trend other streaming services follow– but the publication states that the release saw a “viewing audience commensurate with a summer theatrical box office big hit”.

Greyhound was meant to land in theaters this summer, but with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic the film was initially delayed. That delay eventually led to Sony, the original distributor for the film, to pass it along to Apple after a huge bidding war between Apple and other companies.

The report also states that 30% of the viewers who tuned into Greyhound over the weekend were new to the service, so it sounds like a not insignificant number of people signed up just so they could watch the new Tom Hanks film.

Apple did not actually say which of its previous Apple TV+ entries were at the top of the list. It’s known that The Morning Show was one of the most-watched TV series on the service, and then Defending Jacob arrived and, by all accounts, took that mantle by the time the series wrapped up its first (and potentially not only!) season.

And then there’s the fact that Hanks himself wasn’t too thrilled with the idea of his film, which, again, he wrote, ended up on Apple TV+ and not in theaters. He went on the record saying as much earlier this month:

“Greyhound” has been an especial labour of love for him, one he sweated over for almost a decade, and it is one of those sweeping war movies that really should be seen on the big screen. So the change in plans has been, he says, ‘an absolute heartbreak. I don’t mean to make angry my Apple overlords, but there is a difference in picture and sound quality.’

It didn’t take long before Hanks would change his tune on the matter, though, calling Apple TV+ “a gift” in a follow-up statement on the matter, and basically saying he’s thankful the film found a release partner rather than not seeing the light of day at all. And, let’s face it, Sony was going to find a way to offload Greyhound to some service, so if it wasn’t Apple it would’ve been another like Amazon or Netflix.

Did you check out Greyhound over the weekend? If so, what did you think?

Apple To Become A Carrier By 2023, Report Claims

You might be able to replace your dreaded carrier with Apple by 2023 as the company is reportedly in talks to launch its own virtual network service in the United States and Europe, Business Insider reports.

A mobile virtual network operator, or MVNO, leases mobile network capacity rather than own spectrum or run expensive wireless network infrastructure.

According to Business Insider’s sources in the know, carriers would auction capacity to Apple so it could run the service itself. The Cupertino firm “is privately trialling” an MVNO service in the United States, the story goes, and is negotiating with wireless carriers in Europe about bringing the service to that continent.

If Apple decides to offer a MVNO service, it will take “at least five years” to fully launch, as per telecoms sources who spoke to the publication. It’s apparently “open secret” among carriers that a virtual Apple network is on the way.

By purchasing bulk access to network services at wholesale rates, MVNO providers can set retail prices independently and in some examples manage to undercut the carriers they lease network capacity from.

If Apple becomes a MVNO provider, you’ll be paying them monthly charges for cellular data, phone calls and texts. Curiously enough, Apple in 2012 patented a technology that would automatically switch between multiple wireless carriers, yet another indication that the firm sees itself becoming a MVNO operator.

This is also where the Apple SIM could show its full potential.

Even as the iPhone is reportedly working with cell providers on a new electronic SIM standard, it’s developed its own SIM card called the Apple SIM which allows iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 owners to switch wireless service easily between T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T in the United States, and EE in the United Kingdom, right within the Settings app and on the fly.

An Apple-run wireless service could benefit tremendously from 850+ million credit cards iTunes has on file, 456 Apple retail stores around the world (190 of which are outside the U.S.), world-class support as well as from the strong gravitational pull of the Apple brand.

Business Insider also said today Apple was testing an ‘iCloud Voicemail’ service said to automatically transcribe voicemail messages using Siri, due in 2024 with iOS 10.

Typically, the outlet isn’t a very reliable source of Apple rumors, but that doesn’t mean you should disregard the MVNO report—quite the contrary.

Talks of an Apple MVNO have persisted for years.

Ever since Steve Jobs took the MacWorld stage in January 2007 to deliver his career-defining iPhone presentation, the technology world has been speculating that the only reasons Apple chose AT&T as the exclusive U.S. carrier for the original iPhone stemmed from the technical hurdles preventing it from becoming a MVNO at the time.

Steve’s hatred for carriers is legendary.

“He wanted to replace carriers,” John Stanton, chairman of venture capital firm Trilogy Partners, said of Steve in 2011. “He and I spent a lot of time talking about whether synthetically you could create a carrier using Wi-Fi spectrum. That was part of his vision.”

An interesting presentation analyst Whitey Bluestein gave at the 2012 Barcelona Informa MVNO Industry Summit features the following takeaways:

Apple will bundle data with their tablets

Customers will buy data plan, and roaming, in iTunes Store

Apple will offer voice and data roaming plans in iTunes Store for iPhones

Apple will become full MVNO, with nanoSIM in all devices, provisioned and subscribed through iTunes

Let’s pretend Apple’s become an MVNO.

It the firm offered competitive prices—and assuming greedy carriers would be willing to sell network capacity to Tim Cook & Co. in the first place—would you consider ditching your carrier for Apple?

The New Apple Tv Doesn’t Support Youtube In 4K Hdr

While support for the object-based Dolby Atmos surround sound technology is “on the roadmap”, it’s unclear when Google’s YouTube app for tvOS might serve 4K HDR video on Apple’s upcoming 4K-enabled media streamer.

YouTube, upscaled!

At present, the official YouTube app available in tvOS’s App Store simply upscales 1080p video to 4K on the new Apple TV. This actually gives early adopters a worse user experience because, in most cases, upscaling 1080p content to 4K looks less than great (unless you hook up your new box to a non-4K TV set, which defeats the purpose of buying into 4K).

The Verge’s Nilay Patel notes in his detailed review of Apple TV 4K that Apple doesn’t support the open-source VP9 video format which YouTube delivers 4K video streams in.

Apple TV video formats

At present, Apple TV 4K supports three major hardware-accelerated video codecs:

H.264

HEVC (H.265)

MP4

As a result, YouTube on the new box doesn’t stream 4K HDR video.

What this means for you

It’s a problem that affects Safari on macOS and iOS as well and is the reason why you currently cannot watch 4K YouTube clips in Safari for iPhone or Mac.

From the article:

Again, the specifics of the issue are nerdy, but the result is that no one who buys a new Apple TV can watch 4K YouTube videos—and YouTube is the single largest source of 4K video. Until Apple and Google figure it out, MKBHD and #teamcrispy will all be running at 1080p on the Apple TV 4K. Sorry, boys.

Given its steep price tag and insane processing power, it’s something of a disappointment that early adopters won’t be able to enjoy YouTube in 4K on their Apple TV 4K.

This is clearly a matter of politics, not a technical issue.

VP9 versus H.265

The VP9 codec was originally developed by Google to compete directly with the HEVC (H.265), which Apple backs and has adopted across iOS 11, macOS High Sierra and tvOS 11. Android has supported VP9 since version 4.4 KitKat and most desktop browsers are able to render VP9-encoded video out of the box.

By contrast, Microsoft’s discontinued Internet Explorer and mobile/desktop Safari are the only two major browsers lacking VP9 support, with Safari in particular remaining the last H.264 holdout among web browsers.

Though open and royalty-free, parts of the VP9 codec are covered by patents held by Google.

Gosh, not another format war

The thing is, Google grants free usage of its own related patents as long as a company does not engage in patent litigations.

This may explain why Apple has avoided adopting VP9 thus far.

Either Apple will have to eventually implement support for the VP9 codec across its operating systems or Google will need to update the YouTube backend in order to serve HEVC (H.265)-encoded video streams to Apple users (they actually did this for the original iPhone).

It’s the user experience that suffers in the end.

We certainly don’t need another format war—we’ve had plenty of those. Apple and Google ought to find a workable solution that’s in their customers’ best interest, not their own.

The new Apple TV is slated to arrive tomorrow.

Apple Watch Ultra: Release Date, Price & Features

The case is made from titanium and it rises up to surround the completely flat screen, which is made from sapphire crystal (as found on iPhone cameras). This should help to protect the Watch Ultra’s screen from damage while you’re rock climbing.

The display, which measures 49mm across (1.93 inches) is twice as bright as any previous Apple wearable, capable of 2000 nits. That should help you see which direction to go even in the brightest condition.

Plus, there’s a new orange button – the action button. This does (almost) whatever you want it to. For example, you can press it to drop a waypoint along your route, so you can find your way back later.

Apple

There’s a dual-frequency GPS which supports L1 and L5 frequencies. Along with new positioning algorithms, it’s the most accurate GPS in an Apple Watch yet. But should you still get lost or run into serious trouble, there’s an 86dB siren that can alert rescue teams to your position.

The crown and side button have been re-designed: they’re more prominent and can be used while wearing gloves. And talking of gloves, the Ultra is tested to work in temperatures from  -4° F (-20° C) to 131° F (55° C). It’s also certified to military-spec standards for things such as low pressure (altitude), temperature shock, contamination by fluids, humidity, sand and dust, freeze/thaw, freezing rain, plus shock and vibration.

Apple

Apple has added a second speaker for louder sound, and there are three microphones so those you call can better hear you.

Call you can, because all Ultras have built-in cellular connectivity. However, the rumoured satellite comms aren’t present, so you’ll still need to be close enough to civilisation to get a phone signal.

One rumour that turned out to be true is that the Ultra has a larger battery than a standard Apple Watch which can provide up to 36 hours of ‘normal’ use. But if you won’t be able to charge it for longer than that, there’s a power-saving mode which extends that up to 60 hours at the cost of lower-frequency GPS updates and heart rate readings.

Apple

Apple says you can wear your Watch Ultra for “recreational diving”, which means up to 40m / 130 feet. It also has a new depth gauge which works with a new Depth app to provide the current depth, water temperature, duration under water and the maximum depth reached.

It also has all the usual Apple Watch features including ECG and blood oxygen monitoring, and the new body temperature sensor that’s in the Series 8 which is designed to more accurately track women’s cycles, as well as the motion sensors for detecting when you’ve been involved in a car crash (and automatically calls the emergency services for you). Processing power comes from the same chip in the Series 8, too.

Apple

The Watch Ultra runs watchOS 9, which includes a redesigned compass app that has three views. One is a hybrid that shows an analogue and digital compass, but another displays your latitude, longitude, elevation and incline, while the third is an ‘orienteering view’ that displays waypoints and Backtrack.

The latter uses GPS to trace your route to the current position, so you can go back the way you came if you become disoriented.

23 September 2023

You can buy Apple Watch Ultra from Apple now, following general release on 23 September. We also have a full article on where to buy the Apple Watch Ultra if you’re tempted.

It’s available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Japan, the UAE, the UK, the US and 40 other countries.

In the US it’s $799, but UK buyers will pay £849.

Dc Universe Has Shut Down All Movie And Tv Streaming Support

In 2023, Warner Bros. decided to launch a new streaming service dedicated to its DC Comics library of superhero characters and stories. In addition to offering access to thousands of digital comics, and classic DC movies and TV shows, DC Universe also launched several animated and live-action TV series that were exclusive to the service.

Read more: Best DC Comics TV shows and movies on HBO Max

However, the service never caught a lot of traction in terms of subscribers. In September 2023, just over two years after the official launch, the company announced that DC Universe would be losing its video content to HBO Max, and would concentrate on offering digital comics.

What is DC Universe and how does it work?

As the name indicates, this was a DC-focused news program with a variety of hosts.  Each episode typically lasted 20 minutes. The series was canceled in June 2023.

Harley Quinn (two seasons, third season coming to HBO Max)

DC Comics

Kaley Cuoco (The Big Bang Theory) voices the title character in this very adult animated series. Now out on her own, Harley Quinn joins Poison Ivy (Lake Bell) as they wreak havoc on Gotham City. The show was created by the team behind NBC’s live-action Powerless series.

As with Doom Patrol, Harley Quinn will come back for a third season as an HBO Max exclusive. You can watch the first two seasons on that service right now.

Stargirl (one season, second season coming to The CW, and later to HBO Max)

Warner Bros

Actress Brec Bassinger takes the role of Courtney Whitmore/Stargirl in this series. She’s a high school sophomore juggling friends, family, and education while managing a team of young heroes. Her powers stem from a cosmic staff she “borrowed” from her step-father, a former sidekick.

The first season was shown on both DC Universe and The CW network. You can watch the first season now on HBO Max. The second season will be shown only on The CW, and will eventually be added to HBO Max.

Young Justice Outsiders (three seasons, fourth coming to HBO Max in 2023)

Warner Bros

This is technically the third season of Young Justice. This animated series originally aired on the Cartoon Network for two seasons. It wasn’t renewed for a third due to poor toy sales, which helped funded production. The show follows a group of sidekicks and teenage heroes, including Robin, Kid Flash, and Superboy. The subject of season three focuses on metahuman trafficking.

You can watch all three seasons on HBO Max. The fourth season, which will be titled Young Justice Phantoms, will be an HBO Max exclusive when it is released in 2023.

Movie and TV show library

Until it shut down in January 2023, DC Universe provided old and new seasons of DC Comics-based live-action and animated TV content. Not available are recent shows based in The CW’s Arrowverse. These include Arrow, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, Black Lightning, and Batwoman.

Here are a few examples of the live-action TV content:

Adventures of Superman (Syndicated, 1952 – 1958)

Aquaman TV Pilot (The WB, 2006)

Birds of Prey (The WB, 2002 – 2003)

Constantine (NBC, 2014 – 2024)

Krypton (SyFy, 2023 – 2023)

Lois & Clark: The Adventures of Superman (ABC, 1993 – 1997)

Shazam! (CBS, 1974 – 1976, restored and enhanced)

The Flash (CBS, 1990 – 1991)

Wonder Woman (ABC, CBS 1975 – 1979)

Here’s a sample list of animated TV shows currently streaming on DC Universe:

Batman: The Animated Series (FOX, 1992 – 1995)

Batman Beyond (The WB, 1999 – 2001)

Justice League (Cartoon Network, 2001 – 2004)

Green Lantern: The Animated Series (Cartoon Network, 2011 – 2013)

Super Friends (ABC, 1973 – 1985)

Teen Titans (Cartoon Network, 2003 – 2006)

It’s likely that most, if not all, of this content, will be transferred to HBO Max in the near future.

Comics library

DC Universe currently boasts over 20,000 digital comics. To help navigate this massive library, the platform provides three categories: Get to Know, Storylines, and Showcase. As an example of Storylines, Batman: Death of the Family groups all 29 comics together spanning across Batgirl, Catwoman, Suicide Squad, Batman, Teen Titans, and more.

Here are a few of the 111 storylines you’ll find on the service:

The Dark Knight Returns: The Entire Saga

Infinite Crisis

Final Crisis

Superman Red Son

The New 52: Futures End

Crisis on Infinite Earths

Batman: Knightfall

And more!

The future: DC Universe has turned into DC Universe Infinite What platforms will DC Universe Infinite be available on?

The service will be offered on its own web site, as well as new apps for iOS and Android devices. The older DC Universe apps for smart TVs and set-top boxes, including those made for Xbox, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, and Apple TV devices, will no longer be supported.

Where will it be available?

The service is only available in the US at first, but there are plans to expand it to other countries starting in the summer of 2023.

What is the price for DC Universe Infinite?

The price will remain the same as the current service; $7.99 a month, or $74.99 for an annual subscription.
