Google’s New Privacy Policy: Ignore The Hysterics

Google announced yesterday a big change in privacy and user data across dozens of services.

The new system is causing confusion, and has triggered some hyperbolic, knee-jerk reactions by the tech-pundit echo chamber.

If you read the tech press, for example, you’ll be told that Google’s changes mean:

1. Google will follow you as you surf the web

2. Google will harvest more personal data about you

3. You can’t opt out — there’s nothing you can do about it.

In a nutshell, here’s the silly overreaction of the week: Google is watching your every move to learn more about you and there’s nothing you can do about it.

Google is integrating services. That’s all.

Google currently has more than 60 different privacy-related “documents” for many different services. The new rules will unite them into one. The new policy goes into effect March 1.

The new, unified privacy policy guarantees that you can get access to your own data but others can’t. Google also says they’ve written their new policy in plain language so that users can understand it.

In other words, as a privacy policy, it’s far better than average.

Google also announced that they will remove many of the user data walls that currently separate its wide range of services.

When you log into to one Google service, you’ve logged into all of them. When you log out of one, you’ve logged out of all.

Here’s why the echo chamber is wrong about all this:

1. Google won’t “follow you.” You’re simply logged in until you log out. That log in now fully applies to all Google services covered by this new unification.

2. Google won’t suddenly “harvest more personal data about you.” Let’s say Google currently knows A about you on Gmail, B about you on YouTube and C about you on Search. Under the new system, Google will know ABC about you on each of those three services. But Google doesn’t know more about you. They still know ABC about you, just as before.

3. Of course you can opt out. You can also log out, and log-out is now much more powerful. When you log out from, say, Gmail, you log out from everything.

This simplification and unification are all part of the “Larryfication” of Google — changes driven by Google co-founder and now CEO Larry Page to improve the company’s prospects for surviving and thriving in the future.

Google says the purpose of the changes is to “integrate our different products more closely so that we can create a beautifully simple, intuitive user experience across Google.”

This statement says it all. According to Google’s own online dictionary, the word “integrate” means to “Combine (parts) with another so that they become a whole.”

Google products like Gmail and YouTube are the “parts” that are being combined with each other to produce a new “whole.”

See how the word “Google” is used in the quote above? “Google” is now not only a company, but a place or product — the “whole” which has been formed from the combining of parts.

So if Google is the product, that means Search, YouTube, Gmail, Google+ and others are to become mere features or services within the newly unified Google product.

Which raises the question: How can you tell when something is a product or a feature?

For example, when you use Facebook, that social network has an email service called Messages, and an instant-messaging service called Chat.

Are those separate products or are they integrated features or services of the larger product called Facebook? What’s the verifiable metric for separating products from features?

I think a privacy policy is actually a pretty good indicator. Each product tends to have its own privacy policy.

Another great metric for any kind of Web 2.0 product, including social networks, is how user choices and actions are shared. Every product will leverage and reference user actions, settings and choices product-wide, but usually not outside the product.

Since Facebook has one privacy policy governing the social network that includes the use of Messages and Chat — and because your settings and social behaviors are reflected in how Messages and Chat work — you can safely say those services are features, not products.

So what Google is doing is moving products that used to be separate — with separate privacy policies and silo’d use of user data — into single products sharing both a single privacy policy and sharing user data.

That means the new super product is still separate from services that don’t share the unified privacy policy. For example, Google Wallet is still separate, as are some other Google services.

Yesterday’s announcement isn’t the only clue to Google’s strategy of combining many products into one.

Google launched and is still rolling out a new, unified design, with a new bar across the top that brings together formerly separate products into options selectable from a drop-down menu. When you’re logged into Google, your name appears at the top left of the page.

Google: Spam Reports Do Not Result In Manual Actions

Most spam reports submitted via Google search results do not lead to manual actions. Google uses the reports to improve it’s spam detection capabilities.

In a blog post penned by Google’s Gary Illyes, it was revealed that only a small fraction of manual actions issued are the result of spam reports.

“Thanks to our users, we receive hundreds of spam reports every day. While many of the spam reports lead to manual actions, they represent a small fraction of the manual actions we issue. Most of the manual actions come from the work our internal teams regularly do to detect spam and improve search results.”

While spam reports do not lead directly to sites getting penalized, they’re essential to helping Google prevent spam from being surfaced in search results in the first place.

As Illyes explains, using spam reports to fix an issue with Google’s spam detection systems is more impactful than issuing manual actions.

“Spam reports play a significant role: they help us understand where our automated spam detection systems may be missing coverage. Most of the time, it’s much more impactful for us to fix an underlying issue with our automated detection systems than it is to take manual action on a single URL or site.”

Google’s spam detection systems work well but they’re not perfect. If they were, then Google’s search results would be 100% spam-free and that’s certainly not the case.

Although Google is inching ever closer to achieving that goal, as the company recently reported its search results are 99% spam-free.

Google filters out an average of 25 billion spammy pages every day, which is a testament to how effective spam reports can be.

Just as Google is always improving its search algorithm, the same applies its spam detection systems.

“The reality is that while our spam detection systems work well, there’s always room for improvement, and spam reporting is a crucial resource to help us with that. Spam reports in aggregate form help us analyze trends and patterns in spammy content to improve our algorithms.”

Google concedes that, overall, algorithmic solutions win over spam detection. It’s better to surface high quality content higher through ranking than it is to weed out spam.

“Overall, one of the best approaches to keeping spam out of Search is to rely on high quality content created by the web community and our ability to surface it through ranking.”

Google Updates its Webmaster Guidelines

Google is making this distinction between spam reports and manual actions extra clear with an update to its Webmaster Guidelines.

Google’s Webmaster Guidelines now have a paragraph that explicitly states what spam reports are used for.

“If you believe that another site is abusing Google’s quality guidelines, please let us know by filing a spam report. Google prefers developing scalable and automated solutions to problems, and will use the report for further improving our spam detection systems.”

That should clear up any misconceptions about how spam reports are used.

If you submit a spam report against a site hoping Google will issue a manual action, chances are that won’t end up happening. But your report may help sites like that from being surfaced in the future.

The placebo effect is a phenomenon where people report real improvement after taking a fake or nonexistent treatment, called a placebo. Because the placebo can’t actually cure any condition, any beneficial effects reported are due to a person’s belief or expectation that their condition is being treated.

The placebo effect is often observed in experimental designs where participants are randomly assigned to either a control or treatment group. 

What is a placebo?

A placebo can be a sugar pill, a salt water injection, or even a fake surgical procedure. In other words, a placebo has no therapeutic properties. Placebos are often used in medical research and clinical trials to help scientists evaluate the effects of new medications.

In these clinical trials, participants are randomly assigned to either the placebo or the experimental medication. Crucially, they are not aware of which treatment they receive. The results of the two groups are compared, to see whether they differ.

In double-blind studies, researchers also don’t know who received the actual treatment or the placebo. This is to prevent them from conveying demand characteristics to participants that could influence the study’s results. This is preferred over single-blind studies, where participants do not know which group they have been placed in, but researchers do.

Placebos may help relieve symptoms like pain, fatigue, or stress-related insomnia, but they don’t actually treat a condition or cure a disease. Note that due to ethical considerations, placebos are not always used in clinical trials. For example, as it would be unethical to leave terminal cancer patients untreated, placebos aren’t used in these types of studies.

What is the definition of placebo effect?

For some people, just the idea that they are taking medication makes them feel better. This occurs even if the medication is actually just a placebo. This phenomenon is known as the placebo effect. In other words, the perception of feeling better is triggered by the person’s belief in the benefit of the treatment.

When studying a new treatment, researchers must demonstrate that it is more effective than can just be explained by the placebo effect. To do so, they compare the results from those taking the new treatment with those from the placebo. In order to accurately compare the two groups, participants in clinical trials must not know whether they received the treatment or the placebo. If the two groups have the same reaction, the effectiveness of the new treatment is not supported.

NoteAlthough the placebo effect has been associated with failure for a long time, recent studies are trying to establish whether people may experience a benefit from a placebo even when they know that they are taking one.

Studies on so-called “open-label” or “honest” placebos, in which people are aware that they are being prescribed placebo medication for their condition, have shown that placebos can improve symptoms among people with irritable bowel syndrome or lower back pain. This suggests that people may experience the placebo effect regardless of whether they know that they are taking a placebo or not.

How does the placebo effect work?

Although the exact reasons for the positive effects of placebos are still being researched, a number of factors contribute to the phenomenon. These include:

A person’s expectations or beliefs that they will get better. People who are motivated and expect their treatment to work are more likely to experience the placebo effect.

The feeling of receiving attention and care due to participation in the study. This may reduce stress levels and trigger the body’s own pain-relieving chemicals.

Classical conditioning, or the association people build over the years between a certain action, such as pill-taking, and positive results.

A trusting relationship between doctors and patients or researchers and study participants from the sample. Listening to an expert you trust talk enthusiastically about a treatment can impact how you respond to it.

However, researchers do not attribute the placebo effect exclusively to psychology. A few other possible explanations include:

Regression to the mean: When people first visit a doctor or start on a clinical trial, their symptoms might be particularly bad. But in the natural course of an illness, symptoms may subside on their own.

Confirmation bias: Feelings of hopefulness about a new treatment may lead people to pay more attention to signs that they’re getting better and less attention to signs that they’re getting worse.

Example: The power of suggestionIn a study, participants are given a placebo but are told it’s a stimulant. While talking about the “medication,” researchers are convincing and positive about the expected results.

If a person expects a treatment to do something, it’s possible that the body’s own chemistry can cause effects similar to what a medication might have caused. Additionally, researchers’ enthusiasm can contribute to the placebo effect.

The placebo effect can also explain the popularity of non-FDA-approved products.

Example: Healing expectationsCBD oil is an example of a popular self-medication that is marketed as effective at varying doses. However, there is not enough evidence from randomized double-blind placebo-control studies to support this, with the exception of one product. Even so, people claim that CBD oil has helped them deal with various conditions, including depression, insomnia, and seizures.

Evidence from published studies show that it takes extremely high doses for CBD to be effective. Documented benefits of CBD in placebo-control trials require anywhere from hundreds to thousands of milligrams per day. This is the equivalent of taking almost an entire bottle each day, depending on the concentration.

Most people take 15 milligrams or less per day, far less than what the studies deem an effective dose. The placebo effect seems to play a role here: the expectation is so high that people start to believe it’s working.

Unless more research is conducted, there is no way to know for sure whether CBD products have real and measurable effects, or whether it’s the placebo effect that’s providing relief.

Downside of the placebo effect

The response of people assigned to the placebo control group may not always be positive. They may experience what is called a “nocebo effect,” or a negative outcome, when taking a placebo. The same explanation applies here. If you expect a negative outcome, it’s more likely you’ll have a negative outcome.

For example, in a clinical trial, participants who are given a placebo but are told what side effects the “treatment” may cause. They may have the same side effects as the participants who are given the active treatment, only because they expect them to occur.
