Previously, we’ve shown you how to customize Google’s new App Launcher to make it more usable, but what if you’re not happy with that? Maybe you want to get the old black Google menu bar back at the top of all Google websites, and use that instead of the App Launcher. If this is the case, you’re in luck because the Proper Menubar extension for Chrome does just that.
Proper Menubar works right out of the box; just install it and you’ll see the black Google menu bar back up top, as if it never left.
Plus, you can choose which websites to display the menu bar on (ie. Google websites only, all websites, a specific website). You can also use the browser toolbar icon to hide/show the menu bar as you’d like.
This extension does not hide the App Launcher, but you no longer have to use it if you you don’t want to. If you like to see all of your links at a glance, rather than hidden behind icons, this is a great extension to use.

Use Google Fonts For Any Website With Font Changer Extension For Chrome
Font Changer uses Google Web Fonts, so there’s no need to download font files anywhere, since these are hosted by Google’s servers. All you have to do is download the extension and you’re set.
The first drop down lets you select Global, Custom or No Settings. Global Settings applies the changes to all websites, regardless of the site that you currently have open. Custom Settings, however, will only apply the change to the specific site that is open on the same window. To clear or disable the extension without removing it, you can select No Settings.
A small question mark icon points to the link of Google’s web fonts where you get to preview all fonts in a specified size and type.
The next two drop downs changes the font style (normal, italic or oblique) and font weight (normal, bold, bolder, light, lighter). Again, you’ll need to check the box first before making any selection.
Lastly, you can set a font size value. By default the font size will be set to the website’s values, but you can change this by putting in a number for increasing or decreasing font size. This is great if you find a website’s fonts too small to read, like Facebook.
Font Changer is a great way to play with a website’s typography, making it just the way you want to view it. However, there are some features I find it lacks, including the ability to choose more than one type of font for different text elements in a page just for contrast. Changing to simple fonts look fine, but using decorative fonts is sometimes a bit too overwhelming. Overall, the extension works well without having to do anything other than select choices from a drop down box. It’s free to use and makes plain, unattractive websites look better and more interesting.

Fix Missing Menu Bar In Illustrator
Adobe Illustrator is among the leading vector graphic software out there. There are so many ways that Illustrator can be used to enhance artwork for any occasion. There may eventually be problems while using Illustrator. These problems may not be the fault of Illustrator, they may result from malware, corrupt software, or anything else that can go wrong. Having a missing Menu Bar in Illustrator may have a few causes.
Fix Missing Menu Bar in IllustratorMissing menus in Illustrator can be a result of a few things which are not necessarily Illustrator’s fault. Remember that the computer has many components working together to give you results. If any one thing is not working, then it could affect everything else. Illustrator uses a lot of resources so it can be easily affected by any issues with your computer hardware or software. Whenever there are any problems, it is best to start looking at the easiest and simplest fixes first and work your way up.

1] Update IllustratorIf the operating system and drivers are updated, then check to see that your version of illustrator is updated. If it is updated try to remember if the menus went missing after the update. Check Adobe’s website to see if there are known issues and fixes with updates.
2] Rename UXP FolderOne solution that is worth looking into is renaming the UXP folder. Simply close Illustrator, changing the name from UXP to ~UXP then open Illustrator. The location of the UXP folder may be different based on your operating system or version of Illustrator. To find the UXP folder go to C:Program FilesCommon FilesAdobeUXP. The UXP folder may not be available in older versions of Illustrator.

3] Reset WinsockWinsock is an application programming interface (API) that works between applications, like a web browser, and underlying communication protocols, like TCP/IP. Winsock stores settings that are important to how those applications and communications interact in a database usually referred to as the Winsock Catalog.
The Winsock catalog can become corrupted by malware, or by accident. This will cause applications on one PC to probably fail to connect to the internet. You might see vague, unhelpful messages informing you that your application was “unable to connect,” or you might see more specific error messages about sockets. With newer versions of Adobe products needing an internet connection, this could cause a malfunction such as a missing menu.
To run the reset Winstock do the following:
Close all applications.
Choose Start and type CMD to launch the command prompt.
Type the following command at the command prompt: netsh Winsock reset
Press Enter.
Close the command prompt window.
Restart your computer.
Launch Adobe Illustrator.
4] Boot and check in Clean Boot StateBooting the system in Clean Boot State starts your system in a manner that it prevents third-party software/services from automatically loading or opening.
If Illustrator launches fine in the Clean Boot State, then there could be some third-party services or applications like antivirus, plugins, or web extensions that are conflicting with the launch of Illustrator. Identify and disable the conflicting program on your user account and then launch Illustrator.

Google Brings Back Webmaster Help Videos
Google is bringing back webmaster help videos on YouTube in a new series called “SEO snippets.”
The new video series will be focused around providing to-the-point answers to specific SEO questions. For example, one of the first videos features Google’s John Mueller explaining what to do if a site template has multiple H1s.
Google’s format and execution of “SEO Snippets” videos immediately calls to mind the Matt Cutts Q&A videos from years ago. There has been a void in Google’s webmaster outreach efforts since Cutts went on leave in 2014 before ultimately resigning in 2023
With that said, I expect these videos to be a welcome addition to Google’s communication strategy. Matt Cutts’ videos were generally well liked, and it’s been about 3 years since a new one has been published.
Google says it will be picking questions for the SEO Snippets videos based on frequently asked questions on the Webmaster Central Forum. So if you have a question for the Google team, that’s where you need to make your voice heard.

This cool Touch Bar app polishes MacBook Pro task-switching
Apple promised it’d be third-party developers who demonstrated just why the Touch Bar was the right way to make the new MacBook Pro finger-friendly, and now those devs are wading in. Microsoft is expected to push out a Touch Bar enabled version of Office later in the year, and Adobe is readying a Touch Bar Photoshop upgrade too. However, there are equally interesting things coming out of smaller coding studios as well, as the potential for the OLED touchscreen strip is explored.
One such example is TouchSwitcher, the handiwork of macOS app developer Maxim Ananov. He’s already developed one app which uses the Touch Bar, with the latest version of HazeOver – a distraction dimmer that helps you focus on whatever app is in the foreground – getting integration with the new strip in its latest update. TouchSwitcher, though, tests out a more simple theory.
That’s whether using the Touch Bar to navigate between apps is quicker or slower than the traditional way of command+tab, or picking from the launcher bar. TouchSwitcher is straightforward, basically putting the command+tabbing interface into the Touch Bar instead. It joins the buttons in the so-called Control Strip that’s persistently shown on the right side.
Tap it, and you get a row of icons showing your recent apps. Those used most recently are closer to the right.
Unfortunately, due to the way Apple manages the Control Strip, sometimes the TouchSwitcher icon is replaced by system icons such as for the App Store or iTunes. Ananov says that’s a known problem, and that right now the only way to restore it is to relaunch the app itself. If you want to close it manually, you can long-press on its icon in the Touch Bar.
I’ve been trying it out, and while I’m not sure whether it’s necessarily any faster than command+tabbing at first blush, I suspect it’s the sort of UI that you’d quickly get used to. While I was fairly skeptical about the Touch Bar initially, over a few weeks with it I’ve found myself reaching up and tapping more, as my fingers relearn. I’m still of the opinion that those who are familiar with keyboard shortcuts will have the most trouble migrating to Touch Bar controls, which right now is what most of the commands offered seem to replicate.

Still, that’s the lowest-hanging fruit, and as developers dive into the Touch Bar – helped, of course, by the first orders of the notebook finally reaching buyers – it’s likely we’ll see more implementations that move away from just doubling up on what you can already do with a keyboard combo. At some point, we’re likely to bump into the restrictions that Apple itself has placed – browser-based webapps, for instance, can’t have their own individual Touch Bar controls, and you can’t pin macros or Automator workflows to the strip – at which point the Cupertino firm will have to decide what it’s willing to be flexible on in order to make the new control surface a success.
