The problem with long-distance wireless charging

We’ve discussed before the huge gulf between the vision of a box on the wall keeping our MacBooks charged, and the present-day reality of tiny amounts of power suitable only for trickle-charging devices with very low power requirements.

Under what are known as Part 15 regulations, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) limits the maximum power output of an RF power transmitter to just one watt […] And since nothing is ever 100% efficient, the maximum power that can be harnessed is even less – even right next to the transmitter, that might realistically be half a watt.

But we can’t talk power without returning to distance. More specifically, the relationship between power and distance. Radio waves (and RF power is just a specific form of the same) are subject to the inverse-square law. This states that intensity is inversely proportional to the square of the distance from a source.

Get 0.5W one inch from the transmitter, and you’ll be down to a 0.125W two inches away from it (two times the distance = quarter of the power). At four inches, you’ll be down to 0.03W.

It doesn’t take much math to see that visions of powering a MacBook across the room from the transmitter any time soon are just pure fantasy. 

Realistically, we’re unlikely to see RF power harvesting used in an iPhone, let alone a MacBook. But it is a practical proposition for much smaller devices.

The tech required to receive power is extremely small – essentially an antenna no bigger than the Bluetooth one already present in an AirTag, incorporated into an equally tiny chip. While the power delivered from Wi-Fi is very low, so too is the power drain of an AirTag. When you think that a button battery can keep it powered for a year, then it’s clear that the power drain is tiny.

Consider, too, that AirTags spend a great deal of their time at home – at least overnight, and most of the time when it comes to things we don’t carry with us every day. The idea of trickle-charging AirTags via Wi-Fi looks like an eminently realistic prospect.

It might be necessary to make AirTags marginally larger to accommodate Wi-Fi charging, but to my mind, that’s a price worth paying. The whole point of an AirTag is that it’s a “fit and forget” device. We throw one into a bag, and then that bag can be tracked when necessary.

The problem with devices that need to be charged – or have their batteries replaced – very infrequently is that it’s extremely easy to forget. We’ve probably all done it with things that can go weeks or months between charges, like headphones and Bluetooth keyboards. There’s a very high risk that the first time we realize that an AirTag is out of power is the very time we’ve lost something and need to track it.

Keeping them topped up with power any time they’re within Wi-Fi range would solve that problem.

Given the possibility that they’d need to be marginally larger and more expensive, I’d be fine with an AirTag+ with Wi-Fi charging. But given that both size and price premiums would be exceedingly marginal, that might not even be necessary.

When To Use Topn Function In Power Bi

This tutorial will review how to use TOPN as a virtual ranking function to generate interesting insights based on ranking logic in Power BI. You may watch the full video of this tutorial at the bottom of this blog.

Using TOPN as a virtual ranking function allows you to dynamically produce the top and bottom results for any measure.

This example will show how to work out the locations that generate the highest and lowest revenue per customer.

This table contains the Revenue for each customer.

You want to work out which locations have the highest and lowest Revenue.

Let’s say that a customer bought your products from a range of different locations.

Using Stephen Howard as an example, you can see that he bought products from six different cities:

You now want to know how much revenue was generated for each city. Then, you want to virtually rank the cities and calculate which of them belong to the top and bottom two.

This formula counts the number of locations a customer has purchased from:

The COUNTROWS function works out each unique place where a product has been bought.

However, this formula can’t give you with the ranking results you need.

This is where the TOPN function comes in. It allows you to have a virtual ranking inside a formula.

To calculate the top two cities with the highest revenue for each customer, you need to use this formula:

The CALCULATE function computes the Total Revenue using a different context for the top two cities.

Let’s now focus on the TOPN statement in the formula:

The first parameter for this TOPN statement is the total ranking that needs a virtual calculation. Thus, 2 is used to get the top two cities.

If it’s 4, it will return the top four cities.

You need to make sure that you’re only iterating through the places that a customer has purchased from. This is why Index is used rather than an element in the model.

Using Index ensures that you’re only counting the regions your customers have purchased from, and not all the regions in your model.

If you were to put the VALUES function along with the actual Name of the City, you’d get the overall Total Revenue from the top two cities — not from each individual customer.

The TOPN function creates a brand new context for each result in the table.

It’s creating a virtual table containing only the top two locations a customer has purchased from.

This is the formula used to calculate the bottom two cities:

It’s exactly the same formula as the first, but you need to change DESC to ASC.

Here’s how to check if this formula is correct:

If you bring the cities with purchases to the table, you can see that the number of iterations matches the result of the Total Cities.

For example, Aaron Bradley bought from four different locations. So, there are four iterations showing in the second table.

You can see the four different purchase amounts the customer has for each location.

If you calculate and compare the figures of the two tables, you will see that they both match. All of Aaron Bradley’s amounts equal to 173,128.00, which is the Total Revenue. The top two cities have a Revenue of 124, 191.20, and the bottom two 48,936.80.

This tutorial discussed how to use TOPN as a virtual ranking function to create effective ranking visuals in Power BI.

You can wrap the TOPN function in COUNTROWS, SUMX, or AVERAGE to create more valuable insights in your reports. It’s a very flexible and reusable tool to use.

Power Bi Custom Ranking Visuals: Change Size By Ranking Logic

Have you ever wanted to create a visualization that changes based on any ranking selection you could make? You can actually change the size of your Power BI visuals by ranking logic. You may watch the full video of this tutorial at the bottom of this blog.

Think of a scenario where you want to showcase your top 20 clients. Pretend you’re in a meeting saying, “These are the clients that are contributing the most to our profitability out of all our sales.”

But then you decide, “maybe let’s narrow down the search to our top 5 clients.”

Being able to dynamically select a slicer that changes the chart or visualization that you’re looking at, to a more specific insight based on ranking, is a very powerful visualization option.

In this video, I show you a cool visualization technique where you could use the ranking function RANKX to determine what you will show inside the visualization.

The supporting table is going to have the selections of ranking numbers for whatever ranking we might want to select. So it could be top 3, top 5, top 20, and so on.

We can do this very easily. We will just make a new table by going Enter Data.

Remember that this supporting table has no relationship to anything. But, always double check your model that it doesn’t relate to anything.

So we bring it in here and change it into a slicer, a list. And we want to capture this selection we made here, so we could feed it into our visualization.

We will use a very similar pattern that we used before.

We go to New Measure and let’s call it Rank Select. Then, equal to IF, HASONEVALUE; so if one value is selected (the Rank), then we’ll have equal to that value (VALUES, Rank).

Then, write the number of customers that you have, which in this example is 50. If you have a thousand customers, then write 1,000.

When we bring it up here, we’ll see that it now returns a result based on the selection that we made.

If nothing is selected, it brings into 50 or 1,000, depending on the number of customers you put in. As we select other amounts, we then get that amount there.

After we’ve created that measure, we’re going to have some ranking logic overlaid on a supporting table that we created.

We’re going to feed this measure into our calculation to create a dynamic visualization.

But first, we need to work out what’s a customer rank. How do we do it? We use RANKX.

So once again, we go to New Measure, then name it Customer Ranking. It shall be equal to RANKX with table that has ALL the customers or customer names because you want to look at the entire table and not being filtered into its current context.

The expression is Total Sales because we’re gonna rank by sales. We don’t need a Value in this case and we’re going to rank by Descending order.

Now when we drag this measure in, we will see that the highest selling customer is now ranked number one.

As I mentioned in other videos, if you do not go ALL here, everything will calculate to one. That’s because everything is filtered in its table in the data model.

If there’s only one customer, then that customer is always going to rank the highest and it’s the same with every single row in this table.

So when we removed the filter context from that table, we can get the ranking for all the customers.

We now write our calculation, Sales by Customer, where we incorporate the two measures we’ve created (Ranks Select and Customer Ranking).

For our ranking logic, we go IF the Customer Ranking is less than or equal to the Rank Select, then we want to make Total Sales. If not, then we just go BLANK.

What BLANK does is it’s going to return nothing if it’s under this number (10, for example). See what happens here:

It’s only returning the top 10. Since this is dynamic, we can change the amount like if we go 15, 20, it returns accordingly. If we go none, it’s going to return everyone.

We can also turn this into a visualization. Just get rid of all those intermediate calculations and perhaps add some data labels.

Again, since this is dynamic, we can select our desired number of clients to compare or check out. Simply select the slicer, and our visualization automatically changes.

With this technique, we can filter any calculation, such as total profits or margins by that ranking selection.

There’s seriously so many different ways that you could utilize this technique in your models.

You could use it on your products, regions, salespeople, or any other filter or dimension you have inside your data model.

It’s a matter of just trialing it out, seeing how it works within your current models, and then trying to embed the technique into your mind so that you can very quickly see how it could be used in other ways.

I used this very same technique in many of the Power BI models at the Enterprise DNA Showcase. Check this out if you have some time, and really try to imagine what’s happening underneath ‘the hood’ of these models – you will learn a lot.

How To Enable And Use Windows “Ultimate Performance” Power Plan

Are you a power user looking for ways to boost the performance of your PC? If so, you might want to consider enabling Ultimate Performance in Windows. It’s a power plan that eliminates energy management-related delays and ensures the CPU and other hardware components always work at their maximum.

Enabling Ultimate Performance requires manual effort, as the chances are it’s not available on your Windows installation by default. This tutorial will explain what Ultimate Performance is and how to activate it in Windows 11 and 10.

What Is the Ultimate Performance Mode?

Ultimate Performance is a power scheme for Windows 10 and 11 Pro Workstation editions that prioritizes performance over energy efficiency. Unlike other power plans, it removes the micro-latencies between a hardware component requesting and receiving power and primes the system to respond instantly to demanding tasks.

The power plan is ideal for high-end workstations that handle business-critical tasks, where even the slightest delays can make a difference. However, since it makes everything run on high gear, it can also bump up the performance on personal computers—e.g., you may see noticeable improvements during intensive activities like video editing and encoding.

Ultimate Performance works by setting the processor state to 100%, meaning the CPU always operates at its highest frequency. Additionally, it prevents the hard disk from turning off when it’s not in use, ensuring that data is instantly accessible.

Ultimate Performance also stops the operating system from hibernating, modifies the wireless display settings to avoid random Wi-Fi disconnects, and prompts the graphics hardware to work faster.

Ultimate Performance is not present on the standard Pro and Home editions of Microsoft Windows, but you can activate it through the Command Prompt or Windows PowerShell. Even if you run Pro for Workstations, you may not see the power mode on laptops; again, you can enable it through the command line.

How to Enable the Ultimate Performance Power Plan

Assuming you have the Pro for Workstations edition of Windows 10 or 11 running on your computer, you can enable Ultimate Performance through the Control Panel‘s Power Options console. Here’s how:

How to Add the Ultimate Performance Power Plan

If you don’t see the Ultimate Performance power plan within the Power Options console in Windows, you must use an elevated Windows PowerShell or Command Prompt console to unhide it. To do that:

Execute the following command:

powercfg –duplicatescheme e9a42b02-d5df-448d-aa00-03f14749eb61

Revisit the Power Options console. If the Ultimate Performance plan isn’t present, restart your computer and check again. Alternatively, run the activation command below to turn on Ultimate Performance through the command line itself:

powercfg /setactive e9a42b02-d5df-448d-aa00-03f14749eb61​

If Ultimate Performance continues to fail to appear within the Power Options pane, you must disable Modern Standby in Windows. The quickest way to do that is to run the following command through an elevated command line:

reg add HKLMSystemCurrentControlSetControlPower /v PlatformAoAcOverride /t REG_DWORD /d 0

Once you do that, re-run the Ultimate Performance activation command:

powercfg –duplicatescheme e9a42b02-d5df-448d-aa00-03f14749eb61

Restart your computer, bring up the Power Options console, and Ultimate Performance should be present among the list of power plans.

How to Customize the Ultimate Performance Plan

Ultimate Performance is customizable like any other power plan on your computer. Select the Change plan settings option next to Ultimate Performance on the Power Options console. On the screen that follows, you get to determine when your desktop or laptop should turn its display off or go to sleep.

Dive into other categories like Wireless Adapter Settings, USB settings, and Processor power management to tweak the Ultimate Performance power plan per your preferences.

How to Switch Back to Another Power Plan

Ultimate Performance consumes lots of energy, so it’s a good idea to switch to an alternative mode, such as the Balanced power plan, for instances where your computer doesn’t need to run at full throttle.

To do that, re-open the Power Options console and enable the radio button next to the Balanced (recommended), Power Saver, or High Performance power plans.

How to Delete the Ultimate Performance Power Mode

If you decide that Ultimate Performance isn’t for you, it’s possible to delete it from the list of power plans.

To do that, open the Power Options console and switch to an alternative power plan. Then, select Change plan settings next to Ultimate Performance and choose Delete this plan.

To restore the Ultimate Performance plan later, run the following command through Windows PowerShell or the Command Prompt:

powercfg –duplicatescheme e9a42b02-d5df-448d-aa00-03f14749eb61

Get Ultimate Performance on Your Windows PC
