MKVToolnix is a suite of applications to work with Matroska video and audio files. The latest version, v8.1.0, released 27 Jun 2024, comes under the most respectable name of “Psychedelic Postcard.” It includes tools to edit Matroska files, extract information from them, or package many other video formats into an Matroska container.

What is Matroska?

Matroska is an “extensible, open source, open standard Multimedia container. Matroska is usually found as .MKV files (Matroska video), .MKA files (Matroska audio), .MKS files (subtitles) and .MK3D files (stereoscopic/3D video). It is also the basis for .webm (WebM) files.” Matroska aims to become a single multimedia standard.

Matroska files are not just video files (or compression formats or codecs) but containers that can store many different video and audio files and seven subtitle streams, so that a complete movie can live in one container. It is very useful if you have a different audio track ripped from a DVD or subtitles in different languages.

By design, Matroska files offer:

Chapter entries

Full metadata (tags) support

Selectable subtitle/audio/video streams

Modularly expandable

Error resilience (can recover playback even when the stream is damaged)

Streaming over the Internet and local networks (HTTP, CIFS, FTP, etc)

Creating and manipulating Matroska files

Among the software compatible with Matroska, MKVToolNix offers probably the most complete package. It comes as different command-line applications that are bundled together in a single GUI, allowing you to create, modify and inspect Matroska files with relative ease.

Installation on Ubuntu

Packages are provided for 14.04 or newer Ubuntu versions.

First you need to get the developer’s GPG public key with








sources list

and append the following lines to the end, depending on your Ubuntu version.

15.04 “Vivid Vervet”


apt-get update

then install MKVToolNix.


apt-get install

mkvtoolnix mkvtoolnix-gui

Basic usage

When you open the GUI you will find yourself on the “Merge” tool that allows you to create Matroska files from different sources. You can specify your sources by pressing the “Add Sources” button. The list of supported file types is extensive.

If you add a video file, MKVToolNix will automatically find the different streams and make them selectable and individually editable in the Properties section.

You can also specify an output file name, although the field will be automatically populated. If you want finer control over the output file, you can adjust various settings under the “Output tab.”

You can also add attachments to your file. Pressing the “Start Muxing” button will send the files into the job queue and begin processing. If you want to specify a longer queue you can use the “Add to job queue” button. To see the progress, switch to the “Job Output” window.

Due to no encoding necessary (it only packages the already compressed and encoded tracks), the process is rather fast. When it is done you can edit the various attributes of your file by switching to the “Edit Headers” tab and opening the file.

You will find information about the Segments and different tracks contained in your file, all (or most) of which you can modify.

Working with chapters is equally simple. You will need to create a chapters file (that you can later even merge into the Matroska file) first on the chapters window, or if your Matroska file contains chapters you can open it from here.

To save the new chapter you have two options. You can save it as an XLM or add it directly into an Existing Matroska container, e.g. the one you’ve just created (The “Save” menu is only active is you’ve opened a Matroska file that already has chapters).

If you only wish to read more about Matroska files you can use the MKVInfo tool, which is also part of the package. Simply open your Matroska file in it, and you can read very detailed information about its contents.

How To Create Instagram Stories

Thanks to social media, you’re able to share a lot in very little time. One feature that helps you share anything you want is Instagram Stories. It’s a feature that’s been available for some time now, but that some may not have tried until recently.

What Are Instagram Stories?

If you know what Snapchat Stories are, then you know what Instagram Stories are. You can make up an Instagram Story of either videos or images that can only be seen once. What you share on your Stories won’t show up on your feed or profile grid.

By opening your story and tapping on the three horizontal dots, you can erase any video or picture. You can also mention someone in your Instagram Story, for example, by tapping on the camera icon in the top-left of your display.

You can also swipe right anywhere on the news section, and after taking a picture or shooting a video, tap on the Aa. Type @, followed by the name of the person you want to mention, and select that user.

How to Create Instagram Stories

To the left of where you can view your friends’ Stories, you’ll see your profile picture with a plus sign. Tap on your profile picture, and the Story camera should be open. When the Story Camera opens, choose from the options at the bottom if you want to create a boomerang, superzoom,  rewind, hands-free, etc.

If you want, you can also add content from your camera roll to your Instagram Stories. You can do this by swiping up when you’re at the stories camera; you should see the latest content you’ve added to your device.

At the top-right you’ll see an option that will allow you to add various images or videos to your Instagram Story. As you select what you want to add, you can see a small preview of the image selected at the bottom-left. Tap on the next button, and you can either share it with a specific friend, or you can add it to your Instagram Story.

By tapping on the happy face at the bottom-right, you can add some great effects to your face that will make an interesting story video. If you want to type out a message, tap on the A, and type out your message. You can change the style of the text to either neon, typewriter, strong, classic, or modern. The font option will be to the left of the Done option.

To add more color to your stories, tap on the pencil icon after taking a picture, and long-press on the white circle. All you have to do is choose the custom color you want to add.

How To Create A Tablet

There’s a reason every office building, mall and hotel has a permanent map as soon as you walk in: People want their information relevant, easily digestible and accurate, and there’s no better way to introduce them to your space than by providing exactly what they’re looking for.

And tablet-based kiosks can do much more than any static display ever could. Whether presenting information in multiple languages, using touchscreen menus to quickly navigate a wealth of information, or even hosting a face-to-face call with someone who can provide greater assistance, tablets make it easy and uncomplicated to create an informative, user-friendly experience, which has become increasingly important today.

How do you make all this work? Here are four key steps to creating a tablet-based kiosk.

1. Define objectives

It’s OK to start with a vague initial thought: “I want a map,” or “We need a product catalog,” or “Our daily schedule doesn’t meet our needs.” But before you go any further, you need to lay out a clear vision of what the end result is going to look like.

An information kiosk usually presents a seamless interface and runs a single application, so your definition doesn’t need to be complicated — and shouldn’t be, because complicated kiosks are not very successful. It’s easier if you have a single application already selected, but it’s not required. Because modern tablets are based on modern browsers, building a web-based application for a kiosk is not a major undertaking.

In some cases, you may want to set up a multi-app kiosk, which allows managers or users to cycle between two or more specific functions with locked-down settings — for example, your company app plus a web browser that can only access your corporate website. As you expand your kiosk’s apps and settings, keep in mind the more you have, the more complex your configuration will be. Beginning in June 2023, Samsung Knox Configure officially introduced support for multi-app kiosk setups — which can streamline the process of creating and maintaining this type of arrangement for your business.

But whether you have one app or several, it’s important to be specific and clear. Be sure to answer these five questions:

What specific information will the kiosk present, and how will that leverage the kiosk’s interactive power? For example, event information might be the starting point, but a map and directions might be the very next thing guests want to see.

What kinds of users will engage with this kiosk? Also establish a rough idea of the number of users, because kiosks usually only service a single user at a time. This helps in planning the number of stations.

Where will the information be stored and updated? Ideally, a kiosk will be connected to an online system using Wi-Fi (or Ethernet if necessary) that provides constantly updated information. Standalone tablet-based kiosks don’t deliver the kinds of information people are accustomed to getting today, and will take more effort to keep updated.

How much time will they spend at the kiosk? When you define the time window, whether it’s “10 seconds” or “10 minutes,” you set expectations about the experience at your kiosk.

Will you need special hardware features, such as printers or cameras? If you want anything beyond a touchscreen, get that requirement down on paper early.

2. What should the kiosk look like?

There’s a big industry of companies making specialized mounting hardware to secure tablets of all sizes, which offers a lot of flexibility and options to the implementing team. Do you want something in a standalone cabinet? Mounted to a wall? That a user can carry around? Having a vision of how it should look will help your team select the right mounting system.

A diagonal screen size of around 10 inches is very common, and tablets of that size can be purchased for $250-$500 — although the cost of the tablet itself is not a major part of the whole project (more on that later). Smaller screen sizes, such as the more compact 8-in. tablet are also available, with prices in the $150-$300 range. Larger screens are available as well, both in tablets and as standalone touchscreens, but they do drive up costs.

Keep in mind any special hardware features you might want to use, such as cameras and external printers, and how they will integrate with the kiosk. For example, a kiosk that looks like a traditional lectern won’t offer a particularly pleasing camera angle — you’ll want something that faces the user head-on.

Avoid keyboards, whether real or virtual, which can be frustrating and time-consuming when used for anything longer than two or three words. Mice and styluses should also be eliminated except in controlled environments. Touchscreens with simple tap gestures should be all that’s needed to navigate. This also simplifies the construction of the kiosk and gets information out front, with minimal distractions.

3. What’s the use case?

This step is where the project gets handed from business leader to IT group, because the following steps involve technical implementation. This is also the time to include any special cases or details, such as multiple languages or specific data sources (such as nonkiosk applications) to be used.

It’s important to have the big picture of how the kiosk will fit in with other applications, either in place or in the pipeline. If the kiosk is a natural complement to a mobile application or needs similar branding and user experience, this is the time to get these details on the table. Integration between user mobile devices and the kiosk application can be simple, such as by taking a picture of a QR barcode displayed on the kiosk, if that helps extend or improve the experience.

One great way to hand off the project at this point is to use “persona-based” scenarios. These help explain your vision to the technical team responsible for implementation. Personas are a simple way of presenting different use scenarios, and they help everyone involved in the project get on the same page.

For example, if you’re creating a catalog kiosk for use in a retail location, you might define “Preshopper Pete,” someone who already knows exactly what he wants when he comes into the store and just needs to get to the right location as quickly as possible. Then there’s “Economical Ellen,” who is interested in knowing where you’ve placed the discounted and marked-down items today. Finally, “Browsing Billie” wants to find a particular department so they can browse items without anything specific in mind.

If the cute persona names and specific flows are too much or don’t fit, don’t worry — the key here is to describe how a user is going to approach the kiosk and get information that is accurate, useful and received as efficiently as possible. You could, for example, just write “a user will walk up to the kiosk, find their event on a list on a single page, touch it and see what room it is in and when it starts and ends, along with a map of how to get there.”

The more time you spend defining what you want now, the better the chance you’ll get it, so get as many details down as possible.

4. Design with a life cycle view

The tendency for IT teams will be to immediately look at hardware and software one-time capital costs: how much the tablets and mounting hardware costs, and the cost to design the application. But these costs are only a small part of the big picture. The real costs are management and maintenance.

From the first moment, converting a standard off-the-shelf Android tablet into a kiosk device, locked and secured, can take hours of effort, and is error-prone even for teams accustomed to dealing with tablets. Thinking about the mundane details of how tablets will be deployed, updated and managed is easily overlooked — and you shouldn’t let that happen.

Fortunately, you’re not the first organization to want to use tablets as an accelerator for a kiosk project. Tablet vendors are building infrastructure beyond just providing tablets — they’re helping with the total life cycle. Make sure that your ID is fully in frame, with your full name, date of birth, and ID number clearly showing.

Do note that your photo ID and actions captured during the ID verification may include biometric data.

7. Upload proof of address

After you’ve uploaded your ID, you need to upload proof of address.

This is because regulations require Coinbase to collect a second document to verify the address you provided.

Select “Bank Statement” to upload a bank statement.

Make sure to upload a PDF copy of a bank statement under your name that is less than 3 months old.

8. Wait for 2-3 minutes

After you’ve created your account, secured your account, and verified your identity, Coinbase will review your ID.

The review will take about 2 to 3 minutes to complete.

If successful, you’ll land on the homepage of Coinbase where you can start buying cryptocurrencies using a debit or a credit card.

If unsuccessful, you need to retake the front and back of your ID.

An unsuccessful review usually means that the photo of your ID is not clear.

Hence, you need to retake your ID and make sure that the photo is clear.

For whatever reason, flames are neat looking. I’ll leave it to psychologists to explain exactly why that is. All I know is that things on fire usually look cooler than things not on fire. To me, that also includes my wallpaper. As regular readers may know, I like to create my own abstract wallpapers and I’m a fan of the Gimp. Today we’re going to use Gimp to create flame wallpaper for your desktop. This process will work on any system that can run Gimp (Windows, Linux, OSX) without any additional plugins or textures.


You’ll probably want to start with a solid background color. Even if you’re not going to use it in the final product, it helps to have something to contrast the flames. In this example, we’ll be using a black background on a 1440×900 image.

You should now have one solid black Background layer and one transparent Flame layer.

Flame Gradient

We’re going to start with a simple gradient to form the base of our flame. From the toolbox window, choose the Gradient Tool. In the options section, look under Gradient for Burning Transparency.

To apply it to the canvas, make sure you’ve got the Flame layer selected and drag the cursor from the top of the canvas to the bottom with the left mouse down. Your canvas should now look something like this.

Optional – Coloring

Normal flames are great and all, but if you want some variety, this is a great spot to try messing with the colors a bit. Gimp has a huge variety of color tools for different purposes, but for a quick and simple change of hue, try the Colorize option from the Colors menu.


You can now reduce the Deform Radius if you wish, and continue dragging across the preview screen to make finer adjustments to the overall shape.

And now to give it a little more spice, we’re going to use a slightly different warp. Instead of the Move option, change the Deform Mode to one of the Swirls (either clockwise or counter clockwise, it makes little difference). Choose a radius you think is appropriate, and drag some swirls across your preview pane to see how it affects the image.


If things aren’t exactly the way you want them, the two tools I’d recommend for touchups are the Eraser tool and the Smudge tool. Use the eraser with a fuzzy circle to smoothly remove portions of your image. It sometimes helps to reduce the opacity of the brush to help prevent sharp edges, even with the fuzzy brush. Smudge makes it easy to add and extend your flames. Just drag the mouse across a section of flame much like IWarp’s Move tool.

How To Create A Facebook Reel

Facebook has been at the top of the chain when it comes to social media with around 2.8 billion monthly active users. Aside from mere entertainment, the app has been capable of supporting viewpoints and hosting opinions of people you know through written posts and media. Recently, the growth of another entertainment platform has been visible in the form of TikTok. In a nutshell, TikTok enables creators to express themselves and entertain viewers with short videos.

In an effort to outdo TikTok’s growing popularity, Facebook has introduced Facebook Reels, a section to host short-form videos that are up to 30 seconds long and can be shared with your friends and family. In this post, we’ll give you a detailed guide on what Facebook Reels are all about and how you may create and share one with your friends and family.

What are Facebook Reels?

Last year, Facebook-owned Instagram incorporated a similar idea and allowed users to create and view short, entertaining videos on its platform through what it called “Reels”. Having received an overall positive reaction for it on Instagram, Facebook is now rolling out its own “Reels” feature, giving its users a platform to create and share short-form videos that will be visible inside the News Feed or Groups.

Reels is currently available on a limited basis and is restricted to users in the US, Canada, India, and Mexico. While shooting a video for Reels, users will be able to add music, import media from their library, add timed texts, and more similar to how they may do it on Instagram. While users will be able to select any one of the options offered from Facebook’s audio library, they can also add their own audio or use someone else’s audio to their video to make it more presentable. 

Like on Instagram, Facebook Reels also offers a variety of filters, transitions, and editing features. The platform will soon make way for “Remix” to be integrated into Reels, a feature that’s dedicated for those of you who wish to collaborate with someone else to create videos, similar to TikTok Duets.

How to Create a Facebook Reels Video

Method #01: 

Open Facebook and log in with your credentials. You will find the option of Reels below your status option, located beside Photos. Tap on it.

This will open the camera of your device. You can then record the video or upload an existing video from your gallery.

You will be able to edit and share the same with your audience. 

Method #02:

Open the Facebook app and scroll down your news feed. You will find a section called “Reels and short videos”. This will contain a list of new reels both from Facebook and Instagram.

Below the Reels, you will find the options of “Create new” and “My reels”. Tap on “Create new”. 

This will open the Reels camera on your screen. Here, record the video or upload an existing video from your gallery. Once your video has been recorded, you will be able to edit and share it with your audience.

How to Edit a new Facebook Reels Video

Once you have recorded the video or added something from your gallery, you will be able to edit the video. Facebook Reels mainly offer two editing options, Add music and Timer. 

Tapping on the Timer will let you record hands-free for about 3-30 seconds.

If you tap on “Add music”, you will be redirected to the Facebook music library. You will be able to choose music for your video reel.

Once you complete recording the video and tap on Preview, you will find another editing option in the form of Text. You can tap on it for adding texts, stickers and emojis to your Reel.

After completing the video and editing it, you can either save it to your device or share it with your followers by tapping on Next. 

How to Share a Facebook Reels Video

After completing the video recording and editing, you will have to share the reel. For this, you can select your desired privacy option on the share page. Tap on “Who can see your reel?”. 

This will open a list of various privacy-sharing options. If you select Public, everyone will be able to see your reel, whether they are a part of your follower list or not. Choosing Friends will only share it among all your Facebook friends. You can choose “Friends except…” and select a group of close friends, and only they will be able to see your reels. Finally, if you choose “Only me”, no one but you will have access to your Facebook reels. 

How to watch Reels on Facebook

You can simply open your Facebook app and scroll down on your news feed. You will automatically find a section called “Reels and short videos”. 

Once you tap on the first video, you will be able to see new reels by simply scrolling one video after another.

These will come as recommendations both from Facebook and Instagram. 

Is Facebook Reels just a TikTok clone?

While Facebook Reels certainly gets inspiration from TikTok, the two should be seen in separate lights. When Instagram tried to mimic TikTok with Reels, it was clearly not as feature-rich as the latter as it lacked options for video editing and had a basic library for audio.

Facebook’s version of Reels is a lot similar to that of Instagram but we could expect more and better features coming to Facebook because of its wider user base. For now, however, these are the key differences between Facebook Reels and TikTok:

Since Facebook is one of the older social platforms, its target demographic should be older than that of both Instagram Reels and TikTok. If you’re looking to target people between the ages of 25 and 35 years, Facebook Reels should be the one to go. 

Facebook Reels comes at a time when the US government is restricting Chinese apps including TikTok for the protection of national security. If these restrictions continue to remain applied, Facebook’s Reels should be able to grab at least the American portions of TikTok users. With Reels, you’re not only getting an app that works in the US but also one that gets you larger visibility, thanks to Facebook’s wide user base. 

Difference between Facebook Reels and Posts 

Facebook’s latest Reels is dedicated to people who consume content through videos. While you can upload any kind of media like pictures, videos, locations, and other data inside Facebook posts, Reels, on the other hand, is dedicated to video-based content. While there are ways to showcase a bunch of pictures inside Reels, they are not intended for that purpose. However, Facebook posts can be uploaded without text or with just one single picture.  

Another major difference between posts and reels is the duration of videos that can be uploaded in one go. Reels on Facebook cannot be longer than 30 seconds. We can expect this time limit to extend to 60 seconds in the future after Instagram updated its video limit to 60 seconds. Posts, however, can be longer in size as Facebook allows you to upload up to 240 minutes (4 hours) of videos in a single post. 

In terms of availability, Posts on Facebook appear in your News Feed and subsequently in the feeds of other friends and followers. Reels, however, won’t appear inside the News Feed but will instead be accessible under the Reels tab on Facebook’s Home Screen. When they go out of testing, Reels will also have a higher reach, since it will be recommended based on someone’s interests, even if they’re not your followers.

Talking about reach, your posts on Facebook will be visible to people who know you and if someone shares your posts. Reels, not only allows an external audience but also lets people reuse the original audio from one of your own videos. If allowed, other users can make their own Reels by reusing your original audio and you may gain additional visibility this way when your Reels go viral.

Are Instagram Reels and Facebook Reels the same?

The Reels feature on Instagram and Facebook are similar in many ways since both platforms are owned and developed by Facebook. Since both features are inspired by TikTok, they offer a similar purpose, that is to let users consume content in the form of short videos.

For now, the only major difference between the two is that Facebook Reels allows users to post their account URLs inside its caption. This is, however, not an option for Instagram Reels. 

Besides this, Facebook could target a different set of demographics with its Reels as a majority of its users are of ages between 25 and 35 years. Instagram, on the other hand, caters to a younger crowd who are either millennials or Gen Zs. 

Can I Reuse Audio from a Facebook Reels Video?

Can I share Facebook Reels from PC?

No, as of now Facebook has not initiated the option of creating or sharing reels from the desktop. Facebook Reels is currently only available on Android and iOS, meaning you can only create Reels video from your smartphone and not a desktop. There’s no word on whether Facebook may allow uploading Reels directly from its desktop site any time in the future.
