When a signup form asks to create a password, the first thing that comes to many users’ minds is, “Okay I need to create a password that is really easy for me to remember and is connected directly to me so I never forget.” With such mindset, the password created is something like “ILoveSally143.” A hacker will take less than a minute to hack such password and take complete control of your account.

Lately companies and websites are working hard to educate users to use a strong password, and they are also using restrictions to force users to make stronger passwords. Thankfully, with so much news about accounts being hacked and an emphasis on using a strong password, almost everyone knows that they should use a strong password. However, the questions still remains, what is a “Strong” password? In this article we’ll tell you what is a strong password and how to create one.

How a Password Is Cracked

Before we tell you how to create a strong password, it is important to know how to crack a password. There are multiple ways to crack a password, and the most common ones are Brute-Force-Attack and Dictionary Attack. Both of them are explained below.


In a Brute-Force-Attack the hacker (hacker’s software, to be precise) uses all types of letters, numbers and characters in combination to try to crack a password. The process starts from basic total characters like four or five characters, and when all the combinations are used, the software adds another character and uses all the combinations made with it and repeats the process. This theoretically allows Brute-Force-Attack to crack almost any type of password (including encrypted ones). However, as Brute-Force checks each possible combination there is, it takes a lot of time to check all the combinations, and adding another character will drastically increase the cracking time.

Giving an estimate from Kaspersky Password Checker, the password “pzQm45” should take 3 hours to crack, but “pzQm45@” will take two days to crack. If we add another character like “pzQm45@!,” it will take twelve days to crack. This means it is very hard to crack a longer password for a Brute-Force-Attack, and it’s not worth the hacker’s time.

Dictionary Attack

Brute-Force-Attack has a hard time cracking long passwords; this is where Dictionary Attack comes in. In a Dictionary Attack the hacking software uses a long list (in millions) of word combinations taken from dictionaries along with all common character combinations, phrases, sequences and anything that is “common.” If a password has a meaning, Dictionary Attack can crack it. Adding punctuation or numbers along with a common word will not help. For example, Dictionary Attack should be able to easily crack the password “I$3haTe5%MaTh” as somehow it makes sense. As this methods uses combinations of common words and characters, it takes far less time to crack a password compared to Brute-Force, even if the password is long.

Solution: The answer to both of the above attacks is simple: create a long password that doesn’t makes sense. A password of sixteen characters or above with completely random characters should work fine. But creating and managing such a password is hard, which we explain below.

Note: hackers also use Phishing Attacks to steal your password. A strong password will not help against a phishing attack as the hacker will steal the actual password using a fake website page.

Manually Create a Strong Password That Is Easy to Remember

For those people who don’t like providing their credentials to third-party applications, we know a manual way to create and memorize a strong password. You can create a password from a long phrase that has direct connection with you but others don’t know about it. For example, you can create multiple passwords from a phrase such as “I eat vanilla ice cream at 3am, but I don’t get any sleep afterwards!” Below are some examples:




It will be really easy to remember the phrase as it is connected to something you do or have done before; all you have to do is remember how you created the password.

Use a Password Generator and a Manager

If you don’t want to go through the above process and don’t mind depending on a third-party service for creating and storing the passwords, then things can get a lot easier (and productive) for you. There are many tools that will let you generate a strong password, and you can also use a password manager to save those passwords. Below are some you can use:

Secure Password Generator: A very simple online password generator that allows you to specify password length and character type to easily create a strong password. It also provides hints that will let you easily remember the password.

LastPass Password Generator: The famous password manager LastPass also has an online password generator that is simple to use and offers handy tools to generate a strong password.

Password Managers

LastPass: I recommend LastPass for its simple interface and security options. It will securely store all your passwords and let you sync them over all devices.

Dashlane: This is another good option that is easy to use and offers great security such as two-factor authentication. It also has a digital wallet to save receipts and credit card information.

Important: Never ever use the same password for multiple accounts; even if one of your accounts is hacked it could lead to losing all your accounts.


There should be no compromise on password strength as tens of thousands of hackers are after your information and trying to get into your account. You may say that you are just a regular person and no hacker will have time to hack your account, but hackers don’t care who you are. They just try to hack anything they can get their hands on, one way or another. Identity theft and the wrong use of your account and information is something average users should worry about. I also recommend you enable two-factor authentication if it is available for a website, as it is the best protection against hackers.

7 Os X Tips For Windows Users

If you recently purchased a Mac or if you have been required to use a Mac for work, you might be frustrated trying to use OS X if you have been a long-time Windows user. This is completely understandable and Apple really doesn’t care to change their OS to match that of Windows anytime soon.

Apple loves OS X the way it is and it will probably remain the way it is for the remainder of its life. This means you’ll need to get used to some of the differences between Windows and Mac. In my view, OS X could still be made to be easier to use by default, but unfortunately, you have to manually make some changes to make things better.

In this article, I’m going to give you a couple of my favorite tips for Windows users who have to use a Mac and OS X. Once you get used to OS X, you may even like it more than Windows, which is what happened to me. There is a small learning curve, but it’s worth the effort. Also, be sure to check out my post on programs and features in OS X that are equivalent to Windows.

Tip #2 – Add Applications to the Dock

The other major change that is most jarring for Windows users is the lack of a Start button. There simply isn’t any central button in OS X. You have the small Apple logo icon at the top left, which can do a few things like get you to System Preferences or let you restart/shutdown your computer.

You can also use Launcher (the silver/grey rocket icon in the Dock), but I never find myself using that for some reason.

Tip #3 – Eject Drives using the Trash

This would be like dragging your USB drive into the Recycle Bin in Windows, which basically means delete everything! So obviously, people don’t even like the idea of throwing anything that has important data on it into a trash can!

Tip #4 – Tweak Finder

Finder is basically like Windows Explorer. A much simpler version of Explorer in my view. However, I prefer the more detailed and cluttered view of Explorer than the streamlined Finder. It’s just too simple.

On the General tab, you can also edit the New Finder window shows option and pick something other than All Files. I prefer to pick my home folder, which matches more to Windows explorer.

Tip #5 – Learn to Use Spotlight

Using Spotlight is the best way to find your files, change settings in OS X, find apps to install, find emails, find calendar events, etc. It also shows results from the web, so you could search for Apple and get suggested websites and even a map to the local Apple store.

Tip #6 – OS X Uses Spaces & Full Screen

 Another thing you have to get used to is understanding how those three buttons at the top left of every window work. In Windows, you have three buttons: a minimize button, an expand button and a close button. In OS X, you have a red close button, a yellow minimize button and a green button that expands, but differently depending on the program.

Well, in OS X, the app has basically gone into its own space. If you scroll up with three fingers, you’ll see something called Mission Control. Basically, it shows you a thumbnail of each desktop or program that is using its own space.

On some apps, however, the app will expand to full screen, but it will not go into its own space. It’ll basically remain on the original desktop, just taking up most of the screen. Most third-party apps like Microsoft Office now support the full-screen mode that go into their own space.

Tip #7 – Install Programs from the Mac App Store

By default, Apple tries to protect you by only allowing you to install apps from the Mac App store and from identified developers. In one sense, it’s good because it keeps you a bit safer without having to do much on your part.

If you want to install a new program, the best place to go is the Mac App store. Whereas Windows software is usually downloaded from everywhere on the Internet, most programs you’ll ever need to install on your Mac will be available in the Mac App store. If you really need to install something from some other place, you can go to System Preferences – Security & Privacy and select Anywhere under Allow apps downloaded from.

So hopefully those are some good tips for beginner Mac users who pretty much used Windows for their entire lives. There are a lot of other differences, but if you can get through these major ones, you’ll enjoy using your Mac rather than wanting to beat it. Enjoy!

Yes, you can paint a door without removing it. Paint the door while it’s open. Use a paint guide for the bottom edge to avoid getting paint on the floor. Leave the door open while the paint dries.

Should I use a brush or a roller to paint an interior door?

If you have a paneled door, you need a brush for the inset panels. Using a small roller makes painting the door faster.

I have painted doors using only a brush, as well. It takes longer, but it’s doable.

How do I avoid brush marks when painting a door?

To avoid brush marks when painting, keep a wet edge. This means paint next to the paint that you just laid down. If you let it partially dry and paint over it, streaks will occur. Let those spots dry completely and add another coat.

Another way to avoid streaks is to use a paint sheen that isn’t as shiny. I like satin because it holds up to traffic and can be cleaned, but is still fairly matte. Glossy paint sheens like semi-gloss will show streaks easier.

What kind of paint should I use for painting a door?

I use latex paint in a satin finish when painting doors. Satin is a nice sheen for doors because it can be cleaned, but it doesn’t require a million coats of paint like semi-gloss paint does.

What color should I paint my door?

It depends on what you’re going for. I like painting my door colors to add a fun detail to a space. Black is classic but can be overwhelming in a dark space. Colorful doors add a fun punch of color.

I painted the doors on the 2nd floor of my home black for a classic look. The main floor of my home has gray doors, which help disguise dirt and wear. In my basement, I just painted a door pale blue and it’s so beautiful.

How do I prepare a door for painting?

Clean the door well before painting. Paneled doors can accumulate dust. Be sure to clean the top edge of the door as well to avoid tracking dust across your fresh paint.

If you are drastically changing the color of a door (from dark to light), use a primer to help you get to a lighter color faster.

If your door has a shiny finish, you may want to lightly sand the door before painting.

How to Paint a Door Supplies Needed

I painted my doors in Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black, my favorite black paint.

Clean the door well. You don’t want dust to ruin your paint job, so wipe the door down with a damp cloth first.

Remove the doorknob. It’s not that hard to do and it takes less than 5 minutes. It’s much easier than just taping it off. If your doorknobs are ugly, it’s a good time to replace them. Even inexpensive, knobs look better than old ones.

Paint sheen is important. Although I love the look of matte paint, it doesn’t hold up well on doors. Doors get heavy use and matte paint scratches easily. However, gloss and semigloss paint take forever because of how many coats of paint you will need. I prefer satin for doors. It holds up to regular use, can be scrubbed clean, and covers easier.

Use a paint brush AND a foam roller. As tempting as it can be to only use one, painting doors goes faster when you use both a brush and a roller. The brush is for the recessed areas and the tops and bottoms of the door. The roller makes fast work of the flat panels and edges.

Paint in the correct order. The recessed areas get painted first with a brush. The rest gets painted with a roller, besides the very top and bottom.                                                                                  

If possible, wait a few days before replacing the doorknobs. Otherwise, the paint will stick to the doorknob. You’ll never notice until you go to remove the doorknob and it rips a lot of the paint off. Again, trust me.

7 Tips To Overcome Your Analytics Learning Hurdles Today

I have been writing and answering queries on career transition into analytics for more than 18 months now. While this experience has been very fulfilling, I still feel that there is a gap between what I tell people and what they implement. Let me tell this through a few examples:

Mr. A wanted to move into analytics badly. He had left his job and wanted to focus on learning analytics. He had been reading on the subject for some time now and was convinced that this was his calling. When he reached out to me, he asked what, where and how should he start learning about Analytics.

I suggested him to start by taking up a course on edX / Coursera and make sure that he completes all the assignments. When I checked back 3 months after our discussion – he had registered for at least 5 courses Online – completed none, got intimidated by the vast knowledge he needed to gain to make a career in analytics. He was probably more confused than what he was, when he started his journey.


K was an experienced analyst with a big retailer. She had 6 years of experience, but all of it on SAS. She wanted to learn a second (and open source) tool. I thought this would be easy for her. She had a lot of experience in the field and just needed guidance on learning a new tool. I laid out a learning path for her and thought she would take it from there. When I checked a month after our discussion, she had not written a single line of code in R or Python!

In these scenarios (and many more like these), people knew what they should be doing and probably had the intention to do it at some point. That is why they would have reached out to me. But they faltered somewhere during the journey. They couldn’t convert their chances even after being in a position to do so.

The problem here was not that people didn’t know what to do. They very well knew what was to be done. The problem was that of implementation and execution. And this is an equally bigger problem. Since, I have not addressed this issue directly in my posts till now – I thought, I would do it now. This problem is some what similar to that of training yourself at the gym – you know the benefits of training yourself. You also know what needs to be done – but still only a few of us are able to train ourselves at the gym regularly.

The key to solving this problem lies in taking small and focused steps with clear mind. The solution lies in taking the first step rather than questioning whether 15th step would be right or not!

Here are a few tips, for people who face challenges in executing their analytics learning plan.

Start out easy (but do start) – This is probably the biggest problem people face – they just don’t start. They know what to learn and where to learn – but they still don’t start learning. They keep searching for more content, more resources – but don’t start with what they already have. Don’t look out for that perfect book or course – just start with what best you have access to. Log on to any MOOC and start learning the subject. Nothing beats action bias! While you start, start easy. Look out for simple solutions. If you have to install a software – look for an executable rather than compiling the code yourself. If there is a GUI version of a tool available – learn on that first. e.g. When I started learning SAS (my first analytics tool apart from Excel), I decided that I’ll use SAS Enterprise Guide – it has a GUI interface and I don’t need to learn the language from start. Once I grew more comfortable with the language and interface, I started picking up the code on the side. This made the process far easy for me.

Define learning objectives clearly – You might face this challenge as soon as you start learning. You start with a video on Business Analytics, find out a term “Business Intelligence”. Next, you search for Business Intelligence and before you know, you are actually watching a tutorial on Tableau! This is the problem of plenty. You need to clearly define what you want to learn and focus only on that. One practice, which has helped me well to do so, is to define these objectives clearly at the outset. Not only do I define what I want to learn, but I also go to the extent of what I won’t learn. For example, when I started learning Python – I had committed that I want to learn Python only for data analysis and not for other purposes (e.g. Web development).

Learn every day – You will likely run in this problem 3 – 7 days down the line. You started well, defined what you wanted to do – but then you ran into something – a new assignment at work, a new commitment to yourself or a new topic within analytics. As a result, you break your learning momentum. The efforts you made would go down the drain, if you do this every time. Once you have decided what needs to be done, you have to make sure that you do it daily. Take out time – however small to learn daily. It could be watching a video for 15 minutes or running a small code – but spend some time daily. You would see how quickly the momentum builds up

Set aside some time – The best way to make sure that you learn daily is to set some time aside. It could be early morning, lunch time at your office or once you are back from work. But set a time aside for your learning and follow the routine. Soon, your mind will become accustomed to learning at this time.

Focus on your strengths – If you know that you enjoy reading – find the right book. If you don’t enjoy coding – start with a GUI tool. If you learn best late at night – learn at that time. Idea is to make learning as simple as possible. Take all the hassle away and just focus on learning.

Do not rationalize – If you were not able to deliver on your learning plan – watch out! Your mind can quickly come up with rationalizations – why you couldn’t learn as much as you thought? Don’t give in to these rationalization. Accept that you failed and start again – but don’t start the blame game. Don’t blame your manager for the extra work or your family for extra commitment – find out a way and start learning.
