You may remember that we briefly covered details of the Manta 7x in a post last month. At the time many of the specification details were unknown, but we did learn about the Manta’s unique touch borders which remove the need for any physical buttons.

Now final release details, specifications and pricing for the Manta 7X have been released we can revisit this unique flagship phone in more detail.

Manta 7X Full Specifications and details

The Manta 7X looks very much like a Nexus device in the official renders on their website, and that is certainly a look that we really like. Manta will releasing two versions of their phone, the Manta 7X is what we will focus on in this article as details of the Manta 7L haven’t been released yet.

Manta really are hoping to grab the attention of Android smartphone users who appreciate good specifications, a nice design and unique features. They are not trying to emulate Xiaomi, or Meizu, and like Huawei are concentrating on the mid-range and high-end smartphone user, but being a small manufacturer the time it has taken to get their phone to market has meant some of their ‘flagship’ specifications are starting to look a little dated.

Phone weight is 200g which is way heavier than the competition but also does include the huge 4200mAh battery good for claimed 35hours of 3G talktime, 654 hours LTE standby or up to 138 hours of audio playback.

A micro SIM allows network support for TD-LTE, FDD-LTE, WCDMA and GSM. Full network details such as bands aren’t listed yet (not that we can see anyway).

Camera specifications on the Manta 7X include a 13 mega-pixel IMX 214 sensor from Sony with F2.0 aperture and OIS. The front facing camera is equally good also being a 13 mega-pixel Sony IMX 214 and again with OIS!

If you read our previous report then you will already be aware that one of the main features of the Manta 7X is the lack of physical button. There is no physical power button, volume rocker or home button. The home button is a capacitive unit below the screen which we have seen for year, but the edges of the Manta 7x house touch sensor for powering the phone on and toggling the volume. Even a finger print scanner has been positioned in the side of the phone for security too. Touch sensitive bezels are quite a unique selling point, with some real potential for nice gesture control options, at this point we are not sure what options are included but hope to get our hands on one for testing.

Manta have also developed their own Android ROM named M07 OS. Based on Android 4.4.4 it come preloaded with Chinese and English languages plus a few choice applications. The system makes use of the side touch panels for easy transfer of files and navigating through menus.

Manta 7X Pricing and Availablility

The Manta 7X is a great looking phone with some nice features and powerful hardware, if not of the latest generation. With English in the ROM, WCDMA and FDD-LTE, international customers do have the option of trying to import the Manta 7X, however it’s availability and pricing which might put you off.

Currently Manta are only selling the 7X through their Chinese only website, and pricing is high at 4080 Yuan ($652), that’s almost double the cost of a phone with similar processor and screen. We also have to see how much support Manta will be offering their phones, as the company are still relatively new.

Nvme Ssds: Everything You Need To Know About This Insanely Fast Storage

NVMe is no longer a nice-to-have storage technology—if you’re shopping for a new PC, it’s a feature you should actively seek out. Moreover, if your PC is of fairly recent vintage, you should upgrade to NVMe. Here’s why.

What NVMe is Removing storage as the bottleneck

Not to belittle the efforts of CPU and GPU vendors over the last decade, but the reason the latest top-end PCs seem so much faster is because of the quantum leap in storage performance provided by SSDs, first SATA, and now NVMe. Storage was the last bottleneck for real and perceived performance, but it’s now wide-pour with a vengeance.  

If you’ve bought, say a MacBook Pro, in the last two years, you may have noticed that you hardly wait at all anymore for mundane operations. Programs pop open, files load and save in an instant, and the machine boots and shuts down in just a few seconds.

The approximate performance ceilings for the three mainstream storage technologies as things now stand are:

Not that you need sustained throughput like this very often, but NVMe makes short work of transferring files of any size. HDD = 200MBps, SATA SSD = 550MBps, NVMe SSD = 3GBps. Longer bars are better.

The CPU and GPU development curve pales in comparison to that of storage over the last 10 years. HD = 2-5 millisecond seek, SATA SSD = 0.2 millisecond seek, NVMe SSD = 0.02 millisecond seek. Shorter bars are better, but this is an overall average. Some drives in each category might do better, some will do worse. 

Hard drives still offer tremendous bang for the buck in terms of capacity and are wonderful for less-used data. But for your operating system, programs, and oft-used data, you want an NVMe SSD if your system supports it, or a SATA SSD if it can’t.

SATA SSDs vs. NVMe SSDs

Though the SATA bus has evolved to 16Gbps as of version 3.3, nearly all commercial implementations remain 6Gbps (roughly 550MBps after communications overhead). Even version 3.3 is far slower slower than what today’s SSD technology is capable of, especially in RAID configurations.

Sandisk

The Sandisk Extreme Pro offers the exact same performance as the WD Black NVMe. Because, wait for it—it’s the same drive. The drive uses four PCIe lanes for a theoretical maximum throughput of well over 3GBps. 

PCIe is also the foundation for the Thunderbolt interface, which is starting to pay dividends with external graphics cards for gaming, as well as external NVMe storage, which is nearly as fast as internal NVMe. Intel’s refusal to let Thunderbolt die was a very good thing, as many users are starting to discover. Even though Intel has shared the technology with the USB forum to make it easier to implement, it’s still rarer than one might hope.

The NVMe standard has continued to evolve to the present version 1.31, with the addition of such features as the ability to use part of your computer’s system memory as a cache. We’ve already seen that caching employed by the super-cheap Toshiba RC100 we recently reviewed, which forgoes that onboard DRAM cache that most NVMe drives use, but still performs well enough to give your system that NVMe kick in the pants for everyday chores. 

What you need to get NVMe

It’s obviously best if your system already supports NVMe and has M.2 slots, but it’s still possible to add an NVMe drive to any PC with an PCIe slot via a $25 adapter card. All recent versions of the major operating systems provide drivers, and regardless of the age of the system you will have a very fast drive on your hands. But there’s a catch.

To benefit fully from an NVMe SSD, you must be able to boot the operating system from it. That requires BIOS support. Sigh. Most older mainstream BIOS’s do not support booting from NVMe and most likely, never will. There’s simply no benefit to the vendors to add it, and a very real downside: You’re less likely to upgrade a system that’s been updated with NVMe, unless you play PC games or do something truly CPU-intensive, like editing 2160p (4K)/4320p(8K) video.

Samsung

An M.2 NVMe SSD such as the relatively affordable and very fast (except for extremely large transfers) Samsung 970 EVO can live in a M.2/PCIe slot, or in a regular PCIe slot (x4 or greater) by means of a cheap adapter card.

There’s no way to tell from looking at a slot whether it supports PCIe and NVMe, but you can tell the difference between an PCIe x2 and PCIe x4 slot. The former, called B-keyed (a key is a rise that marries with a gap in the contacts on the drive), has six contacts separated from the rest, while the latter, M-keyed, has five contacts separated from the rest on the opposite side. There is no hard-and-fast rule, but many B-key slots were SATA-only. If you have a B/M-keyed slot with both sets of contacts separated, the most common today, you’re golden. These are also sometimes referred to as socket 2 and socket 3.

If your socket lets you down, it’s time for the $25 PCIe M.2 adapter card that I mentioned. Plextor’s M9Pe and others are available already mounted on PCIe cards as ready-to-rock products.

What you as an end user should avoid are 2.5-inch NVMe drives. These require the U.2 need SFF-8639 (Small Form Factor) connector. A U.2 connection features four Gen 3 PCIe lanes, two SATA ports, plus sideband channels and both 3.3-volt and 12-volt power, but it’s found only in enterprise-level storage adapters and systems.

Not all NVMe drives are created equal

A number of factors that affect performance, including the controller, the amount of NAND on board, the number or PCIe lanes (see above), and the type of NAND. Here are some rules of thumb:

x4 PCIe NVMe SSDs are faster than x2 PCIe types.

The more NAND chips, the more paths and destinations the controller has to distribute and store data at.  The smaller-capacity versions (especially 128GB and 256GB) of the same model drive are quite often slower than the larger capacity flavors.

The type of NAND used matters. SLC (Single-Level Cell/1-bit) is fastest, MLC (Multi-Level Cell/2-bit) is next, TLC (Triple-Level Cell/3-bit) is slower, and QLC (Quad-Level Cell/4-bit) is slowest. However, the formula is complicated by the fact that you can treat any type of NAND (except SLC) as its faster predecessor by simply writing fewer bits. Vendors do this with portions of the SSD for use as cache, which means that a TLC or QLC drive can be just as fast as a SLC drive, until this cache is used up.

Most controllers these days are very efficient, but some, such as those used by Intel and Sandisk, are smarter about how they use cache and can sustain write performance with larger data sets.

Capacity matters

Keep that in mind when you decide what size to buy. A good rule of thumb is buy double the capacity you expect to need, remembering that stuff tends to expand to fill available space.

NVMe means no regrets for a long time

If all that hasn’t driven home the point, let’s say it again: NVMe is the storage technology you want for your current or next PC. Unless you’re a gamer or high-resolution video editor, it virtually guarantees that you won’t feel the need to replace your current system for quite a while—at least because of performance. Indeed, I’ve felt zero compulsion to replace my six- to seven year-old systems since they were upgraded with NVMe SSDs. Zero.

Hard to believe that Apple News has been around in its current form for three years. Apple News is now the number one news app in the world, which makes sense since it’s baked into the iPhone. It’s like the Yahoo! homepage of old.

Apple News+ is the upgraded version of the service and it will include magazine content as well as the typical online news stories. The deal will cover 300 different magazine titles. Apple Card will use machine learning and maps history to decode entries on your credit card statements. So, if you paid for parking at a train station and it would normally show up as a cryptic address or business name abbreviation, Apple will figure it out.

The new Apple Card has a reward system called Daily Cash. “Every time you pay with your iPhone or Apple Watch, you get 2 percent of the amount in Daily Cash.”

The card won’t have late fees or international fees. The company partnered with Goldman Sachs and Mastercard.

Apple Arcade

More than a half billion people each week visit the App Store and games make up the most popular category. iOS is now technically the largest gaming platform in the world. Apple now wants you to watch all of your TV from within the Apple TV app. The idea is to let you pick your own channels and pay specifically for what you want. It’s basically an app update that works across platforms. The app will work on the Mac this fall (presumably with the next version of the OS).

Maybe the biggest news is that the app will be on smart TVs from LG, Samsung, Sony, and Vizio. It will also make its way to Amazon’s Fire TV devices and Rokus as well. It’s going to be everywhere.
