In the pursuit of new inbound links, people don’t always seek out new image links. We’ve been so conditioned to go after good editorial links that image links may be the last things on our minds as we reach out and try to increase traffic (and, let’s be honest, rankings) for our sites. However, there are several reasons why you should start paying more attention to image links.

They’re part of a natural link profile. Chances are that if you’ve never pursued image links but you check your external backlinks, you’ll find that you have more image links than you thought. Actually, I tried very hard to find websites that did not have any image links, and it was quite a chore. For more information on how to optimize your images for SEO, see Ann Smarty’s article.

They’re good for traffic because they’re more noticeable. On certain web pages, I’d argue that an image link might be better than a text link, actually. Based on user eyetracking patterns, an image in the F-shaped reading pattern is going to have a much better shot at generating traffic than a text link at the end of the content.

They can pass link juice. It might not be as much as a text link passes (and it probably shouldn’t, considering its origins and intended uses), but it’s still something.

They give off a warm, fuzzy vibe. Try and find a few image links that are used to link to something that the site owner hates. It’s tough to do. Almost everyone uses text links to funnel their negativity.

They can be optimized through keywords. Just as a hyperlink has anchor text, an image link has an alt (alternate text) attribute. If you used a screen reader, your browser did not load the image, or you were using a text-only browser, this would give the user a description of the image. Although it’s a great way to get your keywords in, it’s also ripe for abuse, unfortunately. While a long description may make more sense to a visually impaired user using a screen reader, if that tactic is overdone, it can definitely seem spammy.

They show up in image search results. Many site owners report that a great deal of their traffic comes from Google images, so it’s nothing to scoff at, if you’re the scoffing type.

Adding Biometrics To Enterprise Security Arsenal

Warriors have long used emblems, uniforms and tattoos to physically

identify themselves to their compatriots. Secret passwords were in use

long before the first person logged in at a keyboard.

Today, the world of enterprise security is increasingly incorporating

biometric identifiers as an additional weapon within the security

arsenal.

International Biometric Group, a New York City-based consulting firm,

reports that the worldwide market for biometric devices grew 67 percent

last year to reach $1.2 billion. And analysts there estimate a further

expansion to $4.6 billion by 2008.

The largest share of that money (48 percent) goes for fingerprint

recognition systems, followed by facial recognition (12 percent). While

these two are the most popular, there are other methods that analyze a

person’s physical or dynamic characteristics. Physical biometric

methodologies also look at:

in the retina;

of bones and joints, and

more dynamic methodologies also are being introduced, such as:

While, eyes, hands and skin are commonly used as biometric identifiers,

know,” says Eric Oullet, vice president in Gartner, Inc’s security

factors — something you have, something you are and something you

”When looking at strong authentication, you want two out of three

when the user ID and password are entered;

as analyzing the speed and pressure used while writing, and

Gait — Measures length of stride and its rhythm.

To keep performance high and storage requirements manageable, today’s

biometric technologies do not have to store or analyze a complete picture

of the body part or the physical feature being used. Imagine the

processing power that would be needed to store a high resolution picture

of someone’s face and then compare it with a live image pixel by pixel.

Instead, each method reduces the body part or activity to a few

essential parameters and then codes the data, typically as a series of

For example, a facial recognition system may record only the shape of the

nose and the distance between the eyes. That’s all the data that needs to

be recorded for an individual’s passport, for example.

When that person comes through customs, the passport doesn’t have to

include all the data required to reproduce a full-color picture of the

person. Yet, armed with a tiny dose of key biometric information, video

equipment at the airport can tell whether the person’s eyes are closer

together or if his nose is slightly wider than the passport says they

should be.

None of these biometric systems are infallible, of course, though the

rates of false negatives and false positives have markedly improved. One

of the problems with fingerprint readers, for instance, is that they

couldn’t distinguish between an actual fingerprint and the image of one.

In the recent movie National Treasure, Nicholas Cage’s character

lifted someone’s fingerprint off a champagne glass and used it to gain

access to a vault. That is not pure fiction.

Japanese cryptographer Tsutomu Matsumoto lifted a fingerprint off a sheet

of glass and, following a series of steps, created gelatin copies. He

then tested these on 11 fingerprint readers and each accepted the gelatin

prints.

Outside the lab, Malaysian thieves chopped the fingertip off a

businessman and used it with the fingerprint reader on his Mercedes. But

none of those methods would work with higher-end fingerprint readers.

features, such as making sure the finger is a certain temperature,” says

Ouellet. ”Everyone’s hand is different, as some are consistently warm or

cold. In addition, they can also check if there is a pulse and tell how

much pressure is being applied.”

Such sophistication, however, has its drawbacks.

Authorized users may find themselves locked out even when the devices are

working properly. Why? Tiny changes, due to accidents or injuries, can

change a biometrics profile, rendering it effectively obsolete.

”The thing to keep in mind with any biometrics is that your ID does

change over time,” Ouellet says. ”If you cut your finger, your

biometric may not be the same any more. Or your early morning voice is

different than after talking for eight hours.”

Biometrics in the Enterprise

While biometric authentication certainly adds an extra layer of security,

it would be a mistake to implement a high-end system and then feel that

break ins instantly would be consigned to the history books. It takes

back-end integration, constant vigilance and consistent user involvement

to keep an enterprise secure.

”We feel security is a user issue and must go all the way to the

desktop,” says Stan Gatewood, chief information security officer at the

University of Georgia, Athens. ”Our philosophy is to do defense in

depth. We have a very layered architecture and assume that any layer will

fail some day.”

The most popular biometric tool at the moment is the fingerprint reader.

Some even use USB drives. And some keyboards and laptops come with them

built in. These devices have come way down in price. As a standalone

device, the unit price has dropped below $100. But, in an enterprise

setting, that is just the start of the costs.

”Often, companies look at biometrics as being ultrasexy, cool

technology, but they forget that there are integration issues,” says

Oullet.

IT departments have to ensure, for example, that back-end security

systems can accommodate biometric authentication, and scale to the

required number of users. Plus, if fingerprint readers are not

incorporated into the laptop or desktop, it adds to the number of devices

that need to be supported by IT.

There is little point, then, in adopting a stand-alone biometrics system

that cannot easily be assimilated into the organization’s existing

security fabric.

”Security is no longer something you can address as an afterthought,”

says Brett Rushton, vice president of strategic services for network

consulting firm Calence, Inc. in Tempe, Ariz. ”It needs to be built into

the infrastructure to deal with pervasive threats.”

The good news is that the biometric authorization techniques are no

longer so leading edge that they are difficult to marry with traditional

security safeguards. Today’s systems are well enough developed that they

can be incorporated into enterprise systems without too much effort.

”A strong authentication system is what you want to focus on and

biometrics can be part of it,” says Oullet. ”But the user should still

have to memorize something or have a token, and you need to make sure

that polices and the management structure relating to it are firmly in

place.”

How To Build Links To Pages Where Links Are Hard To Build

This week for Ask An SEO, we have a question from Anand in India who asks:

How do I build links for my services pages or product pages? It’s hard to build links for those pages (like via a guest post). Any suggestions?

Link building is hard.

That’s how it should be.

Real estate on the first page of the major search engines is scarce.

There are most likely more than 10 websites competing for customers in your niche – and they can’t all be on the first page.

Just as in life, in the game of SEO, there are winners and there are losers.

If you want to be a winner, you need to understand not only how to build links – but how the algorithms in the major search engines take links into account when deciding where to rank a site.

A High Tide Raises All Boats

There are some that will disagree with this assertion – but in my experience, the concept of domain authority is real.

The term “domain authority” was coined by the industry site chúng tôi but has become common nomenclature in the SEO world.

Many SEO professionals cringe when the term domain authority is used, because the metric is not really a ranking factor in Google’s algorithm.

But I believe the concept is correct.

The concept of domain authority asserts that when you build links to any page in a specific domain, other pages within the domain benefit.

But here’s the rub – the benefits are not universal, and in many cases, defy my capacity to predict.

But if you build links to pages within your domain, you should see a lift on your product and services pages.

Don’t Forget Internal Link Building

Internal link building – the process of ensuring that the links within the confines of your own site are optimal – is one of the most overlooked aspects of SEO.

There is no excuse for failing to implement an internal link building program.

Unlike external link building, you control every aspect of the internal link building process.

You don’t have to hope that a webmaster will add a link to your product or service page.

You have the ability to create an internal linking structure that will help boost your search engine visibility.

In many cases, a stellar internal link building campaign may be enough to push your product or service page to the top of the search engine results (depending upon competition and many other factors).

I’m not going to go into the ins-and-outs of internal link building in this article.

But if internal link building isn’t in your arsenal – I recommend you do some research.

It’s one of the most powerful assets an SEO has for pages where its difficult to build external links.

Creativity & Link Building Go Hand-In-Hand

I’m personally not a fan of any automated link building techniques.

In fact, I’m going to go so far as to say if you are reading about a unique link-building technique, that technique is probably already overplayed and not as effective as it once was.

When everyone jumps on a link building tactic bandwagon, it becomes abused, and in most cases less effective.

Sometimes the decline in effectiveness is algorithmically from Google.

But more often, the technique loses its effectiveness because those who are providing the links get tired of the same pitches over and over again.

That’s where we are with traditional guest posting right now.

Personally, for just my agency site, I receive an average of 4-5 guest posting requests per day.

Most of these requests are generic, with no clear benefit to me other than free content that is most likely not appropriate for my site.

But I’m not going to talk about how to effectively do guest posting, because that’s not a creative way to build links to a product or service page.

As I said earlier, building links is hard.

But if you can get creative, and create real relationships with the right people, you can be effective in building links to product and service pages.

Look for people who write about items related to your products or services and suggest a story where a link to your product makes sense.

Make sure to subscribe to HARO (Help a Reporter Out) and read it every day, looking for opportunities to pitch your products.

Find sites that are offering reviews, gift lists, or product comparisons, and then pitch your products.

There are just a few ideas – I’m sure you can get more creative than me.

Link building is hard, but if it wasn’t, everyone would have top rankings.

Get creative, and don’t be everyone else, and you can build links to any page with a little (or a lot) of extra effort.

How To Can Get More Referral Traffic From Your Offsite Links

You are likely to be familiar with link building, which is a key strategy in search engine optimization (SEO). You can build a wide network of links that point back to your website with the right SEO services.

Links pointing back at your website help you build authority and trustworthiness, which in turn will increase your chances of being ranked highly for relevant terms to your brand. A lot of strong links will increase your visibility on search engine result pages (SERPs).

External links don’t only improve your authority, they also help increase your referral traffic. Links still serve their primary purpose, which is to assist web users in reaching their destination. Your network of links can bring thousands of visitors to your site if they are correctly placed.

Refer more Traffic to Your offsite Links Publishers

Start by choosing the right publishers for your core content. There are millions of publishers online. From mega-institutions that receive millions of views to niche publishers that barely get traffic, all the way down to small niche publishers that barely get any traffic.

Better publishers can make the difference between articles that get no referral traffic or ones that crash your site due to their popularity.

Here are some tips to help you in this area:

Get to know the most respected publishers in your area. Working with the top publishers is a great strategy. This will optimize your strategy to place content on publishers that receive a lot of traffic. This is not an easy task as some of the most popular publishers in the world are more selective about what they accept and are more competitive.

Climb the ladder. This is the best way to tackle this issue. Start at the bottom, and work your way up to the top. As you publish more of your work on different outlets, your reputation will improve. You’ll build a solid reputation as an author and it will be easy to produce content for major publishers.

Accept nofollow links. Sometimes search engine professionals can be held back by prioritizing regular links over nofollow. Nofollow links, which Google ignores, are links that Google indexes and can’t contribute to your domain authority. If a publisher accepts nofollow hyperlinks, it is possible to be tempted not to use them in your quest for more authority. Nofollow links can be just as valuable if you prioritize referral traffic.

Diversify your publisher portfolio. Diversifying your publisher portfolio is a good idea. You should work with many publishers from different industries. This is a great way to hedge your risks and ensure you have a reliable network of publishers to turn to.

Measure and recognize your best sources. Diversifying your publisher portfolio is a good idea. You should work with many publishers from different industries. This is a great way to hedge your risks and ensure you have a reliable network of publishers to turn to.

Core Content

These are just a few ways to optimize your content for referral traffic.

Choose evergreen topics (for the most part). Your strategy should be centered on “evergreen” topics, topics that will continue to be relevant for years. Your links will continue to generate traffic for many months, or even years in the future if you use evergreen content. These pieces of content are more valuable than their shorter-lived counterparts. There are exceptions to this rule, however, such as the value of covering newsworthy events.

Create compelling headlines. People tend to pay attention to headlines in new articles from their paper publishers. A compelling headline is essential for generating traffic. Without it, your readership will not be attracted. Make sure you spend time optimizing headlines to increase engagement.

Appeal to a specific niche. You can get better results by appealing to a niche. Bright content that is specifically targeted for your target audience will be easier to find out about them. Before you write a piece, get to know your publisher.

Placement and Enticement

Also, think about where you place the link and how to attract potential visitors to your site.

Link to further reading. A link to additional reading could be included. It is possible to suggest that you have more information about the subject and include a link to an onsite resource. The link will encourage interested parties to read more.

Place your link above the fold. Always include a link “above the fold,” which means as high up as possible within the article. This will increase the chances that each reader will encounter the link. Some people may abandon the article without reading the entire thing.

Minimize competition (to an extent). To avoid appearing too promotional, it’s a good idea not to include your own links in an article’s body. You should avoid linking to competitors.

Include links in your bio as well. You can also build links outside of the article’s body. Publishers are just one option. Publishers will often encourage you to create your bio page. This page can contain additional links to your site.

Support

Because your article is published in a public place, it will generate some traffic on its own. Support your links in other ways if you want them to be the best.

Volume and Scaling

Once you have these fundamentals, you can scale your efforts. In other words, you will be writing more content and working with more publishers. Don’t worry if you are overwhelmed by new work. You can always hire additional writers and freelancers to assist you. Your link-building efforts at scale will produce far more value than what you initially spent on content creation.

If you are able to master the art and science of linking, referral traffic can be a powerful way to support your website. This strategy can be used as a complement to your other traffic generation strategies. It only requires a little extra planning and attention.

Tagmmer: A Visual Place For Your Files And Web Links

A while back, this little service called Tagmmer caught my attention as an interesting web-based alternative to such services as Dropbox and chúng tôi Being a viable alternative to one of the best cloud storage/cloud sharing applications, as well as (apparently) a powerful sharing application in its own right, I was interested to see how it worked.

What It Is

Tagmmer is weird initially, but at its base it’s basically a service that lets you keep and share files and webpages. It’s intended to be both a link-sharing service and a Dropbox-like file-sharing service.

For a free cloud service, Tagmmer isn’t bad, offering 30GB of free storage to all tiers of its service. Once you’ve signed up and installed the appropriate Chrome extension, Tagmmer shows up as a button in your taskbar that you use to add various pages to your collection.

In order to add things, though, you need to seperate them into “Boards.” Boards come with names, descriptions and categories and can be set to Public or Private. Private boards can only be accessed through a direct sharing link, while Public boards can be accessed by anyone browsing Tagmmer or your profile.

When you’re adding something to a Board, you’re given the option to create boards, change title/description/icon for the content, and more. In this case, I’m adding a Reddit post to a board called “Interesting Reddit Stuff.”

Unfortunately, here is where I’ve discovered an issue with Tagmmer.

Basically, Tagmmer doesn’t directly link to content. Instead, it grabs content from the given URL and then attempts to load it in its own little container. Unfortunately for me, Reddit was broken for this, as were a few other sites I tried out.

What I Think

Overall, I have a mixed opinion of Tagmmer. If it weren’t trying to be its own social media platform, I’d probably like it more, but as it stands, using its own (broken) wrappers for everything just doesn’t work for me, and as a cloud storage solution, it doesn’t come anywhere close to the great utility offered by solutions like chúng tôi or Dropbox.

That being said, this is a service in its infancy, and it’s March 2023 at the time of writing.

Since it’s a new app from a small startup, it just might improve. I certainly hope it does.
