8 Tips To Protect Your Business’ Wireless Network

Enamored by Wi-Fi’s convenience, we tend to be blind to its risks. Many routers are riddled with security holes that leave your data exposed to enterprising hackers and other intruders. And if you’re running a business, the jeopardy is even greater. To keep your wireless network secure, follow these eight security tips.

Change the default password

If you didn’t do it when you set up your router, immediately change the default password. This is an essential step given that the default passwords for all network equipment vendors are widely known and just a quick search away.

Use only WPA2 encryption

The unidirectional nature of Wi-Fi signals necessitates the use of encryption to prevent neighbors or malicious parties from spying on your online activities. Even though the option is still available for legacy reasons, avoid WEP encryption as it can be cracked in minutes. Use only WPA2, which introduces a new AES-based encryption for better security over WPA. There’s really no excuse not to: Every Wi-Fi router bearing the Wi-Fi trademark today supports it, as does every wireless device and Wi-Fi adapter card made in the last few years.

Use a complex passphrase

Despite the lack of known weaknesses in WPA2, it is susceptible to brute force attacks when used with an easily guessed passphrase. Specialized software makes it trivial for attackers to process captured wireless data packets against huge dictionary lists to obtain a match. To foil such attacks, use a passphrase containing at least 25 characters including a mix of letters (upper and lower case), numerals and symbols.

Avoid common SSID names

One common tip is to not broadcast the SSID (Service Set Identification). While this could be used to throw off novice attempts at breaking in, hiding the SSID is useless against a half-competent hacker.

However, it’s good practice to not use the default SSID, as well as common names. Hackers have developed pre-computed tables of password hashes known as a “rainbow table” to find the WPA passphrase quickly. These tables are keyed to individual SSIDs, and using one that is not on the list would force an attacker to adopt a more time consuming approach without the benefit of a ready-to-use rainbow table.

Disable WPS

If your Wi-Fi router supports Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), disable it. Created as a user-friendly way for users to add new devices to their network, the WPS PIN is an 8-digit number printed on the label of WPS-enabled devices. Depending on vendor implementation, however, it is likely to be susceptible to brute force attacks.

WPS makes it easier to add device to your network, but it also makes your network more vulnerable.

An attacker can crack the PIN code of a vulnerable device with between four to 10 hours of automated effort, which would allow them to recover your secret passphrase and make changes to your Wi-Fi hardware.

Set up a guest network

It would be bad form to deny friends and relatives access to your Wi-Fi network when they’re visiting. But circulating the static passphrase to everyone is bad security. Instead, set up a separate wireless network under a second SSID, a feature supported by an increasing number of wireless routers. Having a separate network for guests allows you to routinely change the passphrase without affecting your own devices. You can even disable it entirely when not in use.

Forget MAC address filtering

The MAC (media access control) address is a unique identifier hardcoded to individual ethernet ports and Wi-Fi devices. However, the actual effectiveness of this is dubious, since it’s trivial to spoof a MAC address. Most Wi-Fi access points will allow you to filter out unauthorized MAC addresses, though the security benefits are dubious.

Unless you know what you are doing here, we would urge against using MAC address filtering due to the inconvenience and hassle that can result from a misconfiguration. Moreover, having to manually add every single tablet or smartphone that you acquire is a productivity downer.

Disallow admin access from wireless network

You may not be able to keep a determined hacker out, but you don’t have to make his job easier. Disallowing administrative access from the wireless network shout keep any successful hacker from wreaking further havoc by making changes to the configuration of your Wi-Fi router. Regarding smartphone speed, iPhones are among the best. I recently bought one of the highest spec Android phones, and it still lag behind my almost-three-year-old iPhone 5S. Opening and closing apps on that Android phone takes a few eye blinks while the process happens instantly on the 5S. The 5S old and smaller capacity battery also lasts longer between charges. I’m not saying that all Android phones are bad because I know several brands that put time and effort to produce good-quality high-performance phones, and are not just copying and pasting their competitors. All I’m saying that, the integration of hardware and software puts Apple’s iPhones above most of the cheap knock-off smartphones. But even so, there are a few things that we can do to speed up iPhones, and make the battery last longer.

General – Upgrade to the Latest iOS

As the general rule of thumb, it’s a good idea that you always upgrade your phone iOS to the latest version. The updates always come with bugs fixes and improvements over the previous versions, so your iPhone’s performance would be better with each upgrade. There are exceptions, of course, for example when your hardware is too old for the iOS version, or when there are unknown bugs that cause unexpected behavior, but that doesn’t happen often.

To upgrade your iOS directly from the phone, open the Settings, scroll down a bit and open General. Then continue to Software Update. If a new update is available, you can do the upgrade from this window. Otherwise, you’ll see the notice that your iOS version is up to date.

There are several things that you can do to speed up your iPhone. Since the device is not designed to allow upgrades from the hardware side, the only way to tweak it is from the software side. You can do almost every tweak from the Settings, as long as you know where to look. To save you from the endless scrolling through the tons of entries, here are the most important ones.

While the premise of the feature itself is good, not everybody needs constant updates of every app. And if you could use a little bit more power to your device, you can turn it off.

Go to Settings – General, and find Background App Refresh. You can just turn the toggle Off to disable it, or you can disable the feature on individual apps that you don’t need to be updated all the time, and keep the ones that you do.

3. Disable Siri Suggestions

To disable Siri Suggestions, go to Settings – General, scroll down a little and choose Spotlight Search. Similar to Background App Refresh, you can turn the feature off for all apps, or opt to disable it for individual apps.

Using the iOS Dock

We know how to drag iOS apps to the menu bar at the bottom of the screen, but normally by holding down an app for several seconds until the icons start bouncing around.

Now, on iPad, one can much more easily drag and drop items to a dock – just like in Mac OS. This makes the iOS dock the easiest way to launch your most used apps. This iOS dock also makes split view multitasking much easier to use.

Add apps to the doc just by dragging them down. So in these three pics, I move the App Store app to the dock. Tap and hold the app for about a second and then start dragging. You no longer have to wait for the shaking effect to start.

Now in this picture of the iPad dock, notice that recently used apps are on the right and other dock apps appear on the left for easy opening.

To access the iOS dock while in another app, simply touch and swipe up from the bottom of the screen a short distance. If you swipe up from the bottom and go to the center of the screen, it will bring you back to the home screen. This is how swiping works on the iPhone X and XS.

For Split View Multitasking:

First, check that Allow Multiple Apps is turned on in Settings.

Next, open an app that you want to use, like Mail, Word, Pages, or Twitter. Swipe up to see the Dock.

Start dragging a second app from the dock up the screen, and when you see it start to show, continue to drag it upward.

If you drag it up, but not to the far right of the screen, you’ll see the second app overlap the first app, something that Apple calls slide over. In this view, you can drag and drop between the two apps.

Drag from the solid bar at the top of the second app, to the right, top of the screen, to put the iPad and the app into Split View mode.

This allows the user to, at a touch, resize the two windows to their preferred size. Thus, to drop a photo from Photos into an email one is working on, first expand the Photos window.

Then choose the thumbnail and drag it to the email.

It’s very easy to switch positions of the two apps: just drag from the top handle of one app. Also, in split view, it’s easy to bring a third app into slide over, when even more information is needed. Though, things can get a bit wild at this point.

When you have the third app in slide over, if you tap on any of the other apps, the third app gets hidden to the right. To view it again, just slide from the right edge of the screen to the left. Here I have News and Safari in split view and the App Store in slide over.

Multitasking also allows video clips, from YouTube or Photos, to run alongside your other apps

Also, but only if you use a Password Manager, it’s much easier to enter credentials into apps. The example below uses 1Password.

Open the app that requires your credentials

Drag 1Password into Slide Over and use 3D Touch to open it.

Search for the app credential, and drag the username and password into the app fields for easy sign in.

Last, note some useful gestures that assist here. Just swipe to the right on a split view or slide over app to move it off the screen, then swipe left to bring it back.  Another good one: in any split view, to immediately access the home screen, pinch four or five fingers together on the screen!
